I found this excellent film a couple of weeks ago, while deciding what to watch among so many pending movies. What caught my attention the most is that it is a debut feature. It is the first feature film by Chris Cronin, of whom I knew absolutely nothing. If we review his career we will find that he has made many short films and this is his first feature film. He has done well.
The film has a slow pace. So if you are one of those who can't stand slow stories, this film is not for you. I think one of the things that makes it work is its slow pace. It brings more tension to the story, which keeps you on edge until the end. In my case it worked, but I understand that every viewer is different. I warn them of its pace.
It is a British fim and falls into the Folk Horror subgenre. That vast wasteland that seems to hide dark and terrible secrets. A land that seems to be possessed by souls in pain, who cannot find peace. A lot of history from centuries ago, which transmits a sense of bad feeling since the protagonist sets foot in that place.
The atmosphere achieved by the director, together with his team in charge of the photography of the film, is really the main attraction of the film. It can even be said that, in a way, it is somewhat restraining. A film that instills terror must have a sinister atmosphere.
Encontré esta excelente película hace un par de semanas, mientras decidía qué ver entre tantas películas pendientes. Lo que más me llamó la atención es que se trata de una ópera prima. Es el primer largometraje de Chris Cronin, de quien no sabía absolutamente nada. Si repasamos su carrera encontraremos que ha hecho muchos cortometrajes y éste es su primer largometraje. Lo ha hecho bien.
La película tiene un ritmo lento. Así que si eres de los que no soportan las historias lentas, esta película no es para ti. Creo que una de las cosas que hace que funcione es su ritmo lento. Aporta más tensión a la historia, que te mantiene en vilo hasta el final. En mi caso funcionó, pero entiendo que cada espectador es diferente. les Advierto de su ritmo.
Es un film británico y entra dentro de la subgenero Folk Horror. Ese vasto páramo que parece esconder oscuros y terribles secretos. Una tierra que parece poseída por almas en pena, que no encuentran la paz. Mucha historia de siglos atrás, que transmite una sensación de mal rollo desde que el protagonista pone un pie en ese lugar.
La atmósfera conseguida por el director, junto con su equipo encargado de la fotografía de la película, es realmente el principal atractivo de la película. Incluso puede decirse que, en cierto modo, resulta algo contenedora. Una película que infunde terror debe tener una atmósfera siniestra.
The story begins at the barbecue, with the strange disappearance of a boy named Danny. Claire, his young friend, was at the place where he was last seen. We quickly discover the boy's fate and the horrible events that took place in the town, which caused many to leave the place. Danny's father, Bill, is still trying to find him more than twenty years later. Claire will return to the place to help him find Danny's remains. Although the case is closed and the culprit is in jail, the possibility of him being released soon makes Bill desperate, and he will do anything to find any evidence that will keep the criminal in prison.
That's where that moor comes into the picture. A place where many bodies of murdered boys and girls can be found. A cursed area that seems to have its own intentions. As if an entity, from another world, had control of that place. A myriad of paranormal stuff, superstitions and even nods to otherworldly beings.
The cast is in their element. Fabulous all of them. From Calire, played by Sophi La Porta, to the tormented Bill, played by David Edward Roberson and special mention to Eleanor, played by Elizabeth Dormer Phillips, in the role of a young girl who has powers to communicate with the dark world.
If you accept the rules of its story and let yourself be carried away by its unhealthy atmosphere, you'll like it. Watch the trailer for a visual preview. I recommend it.

La historia comienza en la barbacoa, con la extraña desaparición de un chico llamado Danny. Claire, su joven amiga, se encontraba en el lugar donde fue visto por última vez. Rápidamente descubrimos el destino del chico y los horribles sucesos que tuvieron lugar en el pueblo, que hicieron que muchos abandonaran el lugar. El padre de Danny, Bill, sigue intentando encontrarlo más de veinte años después. Claire volverá a ese lugar para ayudarle a encontrar los restos de Danny. Aunque el caso está cerrado y el culpable está en la cárcel, la posibilidad de que sea liberado pronto desespera a Bill, que hará lo que sea para encontrar cualquier evidencia que mantenga al criminal en prisión.
Ahí es donde entra en escena ese paramo. Un lugar donde se pueden encontrar muchos cuerpos de chicos y chicas asesinados. Una zona maldita que parece tener sus propias intenciones. Como si una entidad, de otro mundo, tuviera el control de ese lugar. Un sinfín de cosas paranormales, supersticiones e incluso guiños a seres de otro mundo.
El reparto está en su elemento. Fabulosos todos ellos. Desde Calire, interpretada por Sophi La Porta, al atormentado Bill, interpretado por David Edward Roberson y mención especial a Eleanor, interpretada por Elizabeth Dormer Phillips, en el papel de una joven que tiene poderes para comunicarse con el mundo oscuro.
Si aceptas las reglas de su historia y te dejas llevar por su atmósfera malsana, te gustará. Mira el tráiler para tener un adelanto visual. Te la recomiendo.
