Hello everyone, anime fanatic friends! I hope you're doing super well today. On this occasion, I want to talk to you about an anime that left me with many mixed feelings, that weird mix between incredible excitement and a giant existential void... I binged Noblesse. I've been thinking about it for days and I think I finally managed to organize my ideas about this series. Okay, first things first, and this is super important, seriously: if you're going to watch this anime, for the love of everything, do not start with episode 1 of the series, I'm telling you, you'll be more lost than anything... it turns out the anime starts right after a 2016 prequel called Noblesse: Awakening, it's a short OVA, about 30 minutes, but it's the true beginning of the story.

Without that OVA, the first episode feels like you're suddenly dropped in the middle of the second season... you'll be sitting there thinking: 'Okay, who is this guy? Why was he in a coffin? How does he know the other character?' Do yourselves a favor and watch Awakening first, seriously, trust me. And the story of how this anime was born is a different thing altogether. Noblesse is not the typical manga adaptation, not at all! This started as a webtoon, one of these digital comics from South Korea, back in 2007, and lasted until 2019... I mean, it has a really long history and a giant fanbase, so when Crunchyroll said it would be one of their Originals, people went crazy, expectations were sky-high... So, what's it about? Well, basically, Noblesse is a dark fantasy. The story follows a mega powerful and super elegant character named Raizel, although he's also known as Cadis.

He is the 'Noblesse', which is a title that makes him the strongest of all in a race of superpowered beings called the 'Nobles'... imagine they are like a kind of super ancient and classy vampires, but without the fangs and all that blood-sucking stuff, they are like protectors of humanity, moving behind the scenes, in the shadows... and Raizel, as the ultimate protector, is basically a walking nuclear weapon for his people. The thing starts when the guy wakes up from a 'little nap' that lasted... well, a humble 820 years, suddenly he appears in present-day South Korea, not understanding anything about the modern world, and his first mission is, well, to try to figure out what's up with this new era and, hopefully, be able to live a normal life for the first time.

Hola a todos, amigos fanáticos del anime, espero que estén super bien hoy, en esta ocasión, les quiero hablar de un anime que me dejó con muchos sentimientos encontrados, esa mezcla rara entre una emoción increíble y un vacío existencial gigante.. me aventé una maratón de Noblesse. Llevo días dándole vueltas en la cabeza y creo que por fin pude ordenar mis ideas sobre esta serie, a ver, primero lo primero, y esto es súper importante, de verdad: si le van a entrar a este anime, por lo que más quieran, no empiecen por el capítulo 1 de la serie, se los digo en serio, van a quedar más perdidos que nada.. resulta que el anime arranca justo después de una precuela del 2016 que se llama Noblesse: Awakening, es una OVA cortita, de unos 30 minutos, pero es el verdadero inicio de la historia.
Sin esa OVA, el primer capítulo se siente como si te soltaran de golpe en medio de la segunda temporada.. vas a estar ahí sentado pensando: "A ver, ¿y este man quién es? ¿Por qué estaba en un ataúd? ¿De dónde conoce al otro personaje?". Háganse un favor y vean Awakening primero, de verdad, háganme caso. Y es que la historia de cómo nació este anime es otra onda,Noblesse no es la típica adaptación de un manga, ¡para nada! Esto empezó como un webtoon, uno de estos cómics digitales de Corea del Sur, por allá en el 2007, y duró hasta el 2019.. o sea, tiene una historia larguísima y una fanaticada gigante, así que cuando Crunchyroll dijo que sería uno de sus Originals, la gente se volvió loca, las expectativas estaban por el cielo.. entonces, ¿de qué trata? Pues, básicamente, Noblesse es una fantasía oscura, la historia sigue a un personaje mega poderoso y súper elegante llamado Raizel, aunque por ahí también le dicen Cadis.
Él es el "Noblesse", que es un título que lo pone como el más duro de todos en una raza de seres con superpoderes llamados los "Nobles".. imagínense que son como una especie de vampiros súper antiguos y con mucha clase, pero sin los colmillos y toda esa onda de chupar sangre, son como protectores de la humanidad, que se mueven por detrás, en las sombras.. y Raizel, como el protector definitivo, es básicamente un arma nuclear con patas para su gente. La cosa arranca cuando el man se despierta de un "sueñito" que le duró… pues, unos humildes 820 años, de repente aparece en la Corea del Sur de hoy, sin entender absolutamente nada del mundo moderno, y su primera misión es, pues, tratar de cachar qué onda con esta nueva época y, con suerte, poder vivir una vida normal por primera vez.

Of course, but do you think he's going to have a quiet life? Not at all! He immediately reunites with his old servant, a guy named Frankenstein... okay, pause, forget everything you know about the green monster with bolts, this Frankenstein is, I'm telling you, one of the most stylish characters... he's a brilliant scientist and a total beast in a fight, but he's also Raizel's 'most loyal servant', to a level that's almost funny how loyal he is. The chemistry between the super serious and quiet Raizel, and the dramatic and protective Frankenstein, is the true heart of the series. Frankenstein enrolls Raizel in the high school he himself runs —yes, the principal, what a facade!— and that's where his new life begins... gradually they form a kind of chosen family, there's M-21, a slightly grumpy modified human who wants to escape his dark past with a secret organization.

And later, two other Nobles join, the proper Reggie and the quiet and serene Seira, who are sent to investigate Raizel and end up staying to live in that peculiar house... seeing these ancient and mega powerful beings trying to understand how life works in high school, instant ramen, and cell phones is hilarious, truly, but this is where the series becomes a really weird mix. A large part of the experience, and hardcore fans will confirm this, is simply watching these guys in their day-to-day lives... it almost becomes a daily comedy, a slice-of-life, but just when you're getting used to the jokes, boom!, the series hits you with a right hook to remind you that it's a dark fantasy with really, really hardcore action.

And I'm not lying when I tell you there are fights in almost every episode... when a threat appears —which normally comes from that organization of truly evil people called 'the Union'—, the combat is spectacular, Frankenstein's entry into a fight is always a show. The guy has an elegance when fighting... uff! And when Raizel por fin decide intervenir, the scale of his power is simply brutal, it's that power fantasy that gets your adrenaline pumping to the max.

Claro que sí, pero ¿ustedes creen que va a conseguir una vida tranquila? ¡Para nada! Al toque se reencuentra con su antiguo sirviente, un tal Frankenstein.. a ver, hagan una pausa, olvídense de todo lo que saben del monstruo verde con tornillos, este Frankenstein es, se los digo en serio, uno de los personajes con más estilo.. es un científico brillante y una bestia total para los trancazos, pero también es el "sirviente más fiel" de Raizel, a un nivel que hasta da risa de lo leal que es, la química entre Raizel, que es súper serio y de pocas palabras, y el dramático y protector Frankenstein, es el verdadero corazón de la serie. Frankenstein mete a Raizel a la preparatoria que él mismo dirige —sí, el director, ¡tremenda fachada!— y ahí es donde arranca su nueva vida.. poco a poco van armando una especie de familia de esas que se eligen, está M-21, un humano modificado medio amargado que quiere escapar de su pasado oscuro con una organización secreta.
Y más adelante se suman otros dos Nobles, el correcto de Reggie y la callada y serena Seira, que los mandan a investigar a Raizel y terminan quedándose a vivir en esa casa tan peculiar.. ver a estos seres milenarios y mega poderosos tratando de entender cómo funciona la vida en la prepa, el ramen instantáneo y los celulares es divertidísimo, de verdad, pero aquí es donde la serie se convierte en una mezcla bien rara. Gran parte de la experiencia, y los fans de hueso colorado se los van a confirmar, es simplemente ver a estos tipos en su día a día.. casi que se convierte en una comedia cotidiana, un slice-of-life, pero justo cuando te estás acostumbrando a las bromas, ¡pum!, la serie te suelta un derechazo para recordarte que es una fantasía oscura con acción bien, pero bien hardcore.
Y no les miento cuando les digo que hay peleas en casi todos los capítulos.. cuando aparece una amenaza —que normalmente viene de esa organización de gente mala hasta la médula llamada "la Unión"—, el combate es espectacular, la entrada de Frankenstein a una pelea es siempre un show. El tipo tiene una elegancia para pelear... ¡uff! Y cuando Raizel por fin decide intervenir, la escala de su poder es simplemente brutal, es de esa fantasía de poder que te sube la adrenalina al máximo.

And well, it's no wonder half the world is fascinated by this series. I've seen it rated around 8 out of 10, described as 'very good', 'super entertaining', and '100% recommended'... and honestly, I get it! The intrigue hooks you, each fight reveals a little more about this world, each new character makes the mystery better... you keep watching, especially when a new guy shows up to challenge the main group, without having the slightest idea that he's going to face a living legend. The series, seriously, is brilliant, the problem is that it's also too short... with its 12 or 13 episodes, you feel like it ends just when things were getting good, and it leaves you desperately wanting a second season to see what happens with everything... but... and here comes the BIG but... I have to be honest with you, while one part of my brain was screaming 'this is amazing!', my other half agreed with the critics.

I've read reviews that call it 'indifferent', that it's a work more interested in its own appearance than in the story... and you know what? Sometimes it does feel that way, the day-to-day moments, although charming at first, become repetitive, the humor is almost always the same joke of 'look at these ridiculously handsome guys trying to be normal' and 'look how all the girls in the school are dying for them'. It's funny, yes, but it doesn't go beyond that... the characters, no matter how cool they look, feel a bit empty, most of the main cast, especially the Nobles, are too serious, polite, speak softly... there comes a point where, if you close your eyes, you really don't even know who's talking.

They are all so elegantly reserved that they lack personality, they lack spark; they seem more like variations of the same 'cool and powerful guy' mold than real people... then there are the themes, the series obviously wants to talk about big things: the importance of being united, of setting differences aside, of living in peace, and fighting against a corrupt system. These are fantastic messages... even the opening song has that line that hits you: 'Why does everyone hurt each other?' The series puts on one side the quiet life that Raizel and his friends build, and on the other, the pure evil of the Union that dehumanizes people, the villains are often monsters, literally, transformed by their own greed, it's the classic story of good versus evil, very black and white, without many shades of gray in between.

Y a ver, con razón a medio mundo le fascina esta serie, he visto por ahí que le ponen un 8 de 10, que es “buenísima”, “súper entretenida” y que la “recomiendan al 100%”.. la verdad es que lo entiendo! La intriga te atrapa, cada pelea te suelta un pedacito más sobre este mundo, cada personaje nuevo hace que el misterio se ponga más bueno.. te la pasas ahí viendo, sobre todo cuando llega un tipo nuevo a retar al grupo principal, sin tener ni la más mínima idea de que se va a enfrentar a una leyenda viviente. La serie, en serio, es una genialidad, el problema es que también es demasiado corta.. con sus 12 o 13 capítulos, sientes que se acaba justo cuando la cosa se ponía buena, y te deja con unas ganas desesperadas de una segunda temporada para ver qué onda con todo.. pero… y aquí viene el GRAN pero… tengo que serles honesto, mientras una parte de mi cerebro gritaba “¡qué increíble es esto!”, mi otra mitad estaba de acuerdo con los críticos.
He leído reseñas que la tachan de “indiferente”, que es una obra más interesada en su propia pinta que en la historia.. ¿saben qué?, a veces sí se siente así, los momentos del día a día, aunque al principio son un encanto, se vuelven repetitivos, el humor casi siempre es el mismo chiste de “mira a estos tipos ridículamente guapos intentando ser normales” y “mira cómo todas las chicas del colegio se mueren por ellos”. Es divertido, sí, pero de ahí no pasa.. los personajes, por más geniales que se vean, se sienten un poco vacíos, la mayoría del elenco principal, sobre todo los Nobles, son demasiado serios, educados, hablan bajito… llega un punto en el que, si cierras los ojos, en serio que no sabes ni quién está hablando.
Son todos tan elegantemente reservados que les falta personalidad, les falta chispa; parecen más variaciones del mismo molde del “tipo cool y poderoso” que personas de verdad.. luego están los temas, la serie obviamente quiere hablar de cosas grandes: la importancia de estar unidos, de dejar las diferencias de lado, de vivir en paz y luchar contra un sistema corrupto. Son mensajes fantásticos.. hasta la canción del opening tiene esa frase que te llega: “¿Por qué todo el mundo se hace daño?”. La serie te pone de un lado la vida tranquila que Raizel y sus amigos construyen, y del otro, la maldad pura de la Unión que deshumaniza a la gente, los villanos muchas veces son monstruos, literalmente, transformados por su propia codicia, es la clásica historia de los buenos contra los malos, muy blanco y negro, sin muchos grises en medio.

But there's the detail, these themes never are explored in depth... the series tells you the obvious: 'being a monster is wrong, being good is right'... but it almost never delves into the nuances, into the gray areas, a villain does horrible things, but as soon as he shows a hint of humanity, boom!, he's forgiven and becomes good just like that, without effort, without a true path to redemption. It feels very simplistic, the series seems to hint at talking about bigger things like prejudice, power, and what it means to be human, but in the end, it falls short and the message feels empty, watered down... visually... well, it's okay. And mind you, it's made by Production I.G, who are geniuses, it doesn't feel like their best work, it has that clean but generic aesthetic of an action anime from around 2015... the backgrounds are very simple, and the powers, although cool, feel repetitive after a while... the music, you don't even remember it... but hey! the K-Pop opening and ending are a gem, it tells you a lot when one of the most exciting parts of the episode is the ending.

So, what's my verdict? Ugh, it's complicated... this series is a contradiction. It's action at a thousand miles an hour and at the same time a super slow slice-of-life, it has characters that look incredible but are kind of flat... it touches on important themes but is afraid to explore them properly, it's one of those series that leaves you excited and wanting more, but also with that feeling that you ate something very showy but it didn't fill you up... for me, Noblesse gets a 6.5/10. It entertained me, the fights are good, and the main group has a charm that hooks you, but I can't ignore that the story is superficial and feels like a decaffeinated copy of what the webtoon surely is... it's not a disaster, not at all, but it's not a masterpiece either. It stays in that frustrating middle ground of being 'pretty good'. So, should you watch it?

Look, if you're looking for something easy to watch, with style, good-looking characters, and spectacular fights, and you don't mind a somewhat weak story, go for it... but yes, remember to watch the OVA first, the Awakening! But if what you want is a deep story, with complex characters and themes that make you think, chances are you'll end up like me: indifferent... something being indifferent is almost worse than being bad, it's a shame, because you feel like somewhere, hidden, there was potential for something great... and well, that's it for today's review. Pero ahí está el detalle, estos temas nunca se exploran a fondo.. la serie te dice lo obvio: "ser un monstruo está mal, ser bueno está bien".. pero casi nunca se mete en los matices, en las zonas grises, un villano hace cosas horribles, pero en cuanto muestra una pizca de humanidad, ¡pum!, lo perdonan y se vuelve bueno así de la nada, sin que le cueste, sin un verdadero camino de redención. Se siente muy simplón, la serie como que amaga con hablar de cosas más grandes sobre los prejuicios, el poder y lo que significa ser humano, pero al final se queda corta y el mensaje se siente vacío, aguado.. visualmente… pues, está ok. Y ojo, la hace Production I.G, que son unos cracks, no se siente como su mejor trabajo, tiene esa estética limpia pero genérica de un anime de acción de por ahí del 2015.. los fondos son muy simples, y los poderes, aunque están chidos, después de un rato se sienten repetitivos.. la música, ni te acuerdas de ella… ¡eso sí!, el opening y el ending de K-Pop son una joya, ya te dice mucho cuando una de las partes más emocionantes del capítulo es el ending.
Entonces, ¿cuál es mi veredicto? Uf, está complicado..esta serie es una contradicción. Es acción a mil por hora y al mismo tiempo un slice-of-life súper lento, tiene personajes que se ven increíbles pero que son medio planos.. toca temas importantes pero le da miedo explorarlos de verdad, es de esas series que te deja emocionado y con ganas de más, pero también con esa sensación de que comiste algo muy vistoso pero que no te llenó.. para mí, Noblesse se lleva un 6.5/10. Me entretuvo, las peleas están bien, y el grupo principal tiene un encanto que te atrapa, pero no puedo ignorar que la historia es superficial y que se siente como una copia descafeinada de lo que seguro es el webtoon.. no es un desastre, para nada, pero tampoco es una obra maestra. Se queda en ese frustrante punto medio de ser "bastante buena". Entonces, ¿deberían verla?
Miren, si buscan algo palomero, con estilo, personajes que se ven bien y peleas espectaculares, y no les molesta una historia medio floja, denle con confianza.. eso sí, acuérdense de ver primero el OVA, el Awakening! Pero si lo que quieren es una historia profunda, con personajes complejos y temas que te dejen pensando, chance y terminen como yo: indiferentes.. que algo te dé igual es casi peor a que sea malo, es una lástima, porque sientes que por ahí, escondido, había potencial para algo grandioso.. y bueno, hasta aquí la reseña de hoy.
