Good boys and girls of Hive who are encouraged to see my review of The Ring where I take inspiration from my girl Ivana from @aibi93 which I emphasize that I drew on my board to express my opinion of the film because she has the essence of Samara, an iconic character in the film and the world of horror. It is a very pleasant surprise that I loved this review structure because it allows me to interact more with what I think and want to convey using the drawing I did on the board.

The miniature is also inspired by her because we are both fans of the character called Samara and as soon as I asked her to give me a representation of that character of Terror, she immediately did it and so I present this genius miniature full of originality and creativity because it is easy to take a page image and ready but this type of original resources used represent the passion for what we like which is to create content, totally grateful to Ivana my eternal girl.

The Ring is a horror film that involves different resources that captivate the viewer, I saw it as a film with detective weight where the main character has to connect the dots to solve the mystery that is on a tape.

Details to criticize is that certain elements are used at convenience and the rules are ambiguous, of course in a first viewing this is overlooked thanks to the impact of what is being told but in subsequent viewings the film loses power in the viewer besides the fact that the clues are known solution. If you saw this film, leave me in comments your perception about this great character that has remained in the world's popular culture that on the seventh day will come for you.

I dedicate each and every one of my posts and videos to my little dog named princess, we called her chiquito, she is no longer with us but from heaven she will see that her existence was valuable and the most beautiful thing that will exist in my heart and soul.

  2. Film Review: The Ring (2002)@drax1009d

    (source: tmdb.org)

Hollywood, always in search for trends to milk till the last drop, found another inspiration in early 2000s. Those were Japanese horror films, which were promptly remade into their American versions. The most successful of them all was The Ring, 2002 film directed by Gore Verbinski.

The film represents remake of Ring a.k.a. Ringu, 1998 Japanese film directed by Hideo Nakata and based on the eponymous 1991 novel by Koji Suzuku. New version has the plot set in Pacific Northwest and begins when teenager Rebecca “Becca” Kotler (played by Rachael Bella) tells her friend Katherine “Katie” Embry (played by Amber Tamblyn) urban legend about mysterious VHS videotape which after seven days kills everyone that watched it. It soon becomes apparent that urban legend is actually a true story – Katie has actually saw the tape and seven days later dies together with her friends who did the same. Rachel Keller (played by Naomi Watts), Seattle-based investigative journalist and Katie’s cousin, decides to find the truth behind those events. Trail leads her to cursed videotape which she watches and soon becomes convinced that she has only seven days to live. She decides to spend that time in frantic attempts to discover who and why made such tape and somehow lift the curse. She is helped by her ex husband, video technician Noah Clay (played by Martin Henderson). They also have to save their young son Aidan (played by David Dorfman) who accidentally watched the tape.

Gore Verbinski, who would in subsequent years have many successes with Pirates of the Caribbean film series, was initially hailed by some American critics as one of the most original horror director of its time, despite his film being remake of someone else’s work. Verbinski was helped by scriptwriter Ehren Kruger, who would later have even more success with Transformers series. Result of their work is a film that doesn’t rely too much on exploitation cinema content like violence and gore. Instead The Ring creates anxiety and fear among audience with clever manipulation and atmosphere of certain doom. A lot of credit should go to cinematographer Bojan Bazelli, who has also put Pacific Northwest locations to good use. Naomi Watts, Australian actress who was becoming big Hollywood star, has handled her role very well. The rest of the cast wasn’t that good. Martin Henderson, who plays protagonist’s husband, looks too much like a fashion model and the viewers, at least those more experienced, might have unpleasant impression that they are watching Hollywoodised version of the “real thing”. Young David Dorfman, on the other hand, tries a little bit too hard to act like Haley Joel Osment did in The Sixth Sense. The film actually tries too hard to “borrow” style and content from other, better known horror films, especially those that were popular in recent times, like The Sixth Sense and The Blair Witch Project, and one scene even looks taken from Luis Buñuel’s silent classic Un chien andalou. The biggest problem is the ending, which tries compromise between remaining open and following Hollywood conventions with “neat” wrapping of the story. The Ring is, despite its flaws, good film, and the audience agreed, making it into major box office hit. Two sequels were made - Ring Two in 2005 and Rings in 2017.

  3. 📽 THE RING [Alfred Hitchcock, 1927] - Movie review by Mandibil@mandibil3535d

The fame of Hitchcock´s late american movies tends to overshadow his earlier work and not least his earliest silent period. Back then he was still trying to find his style and fighting for more personal control and this, his fourth film, comes after a huge success of his first British film "The Lodger" and a change to a new film company, that was more open to creativity. He even wrote the script himself, for the first and only time. What is specifically interesting from this period is the expressionist inspirations he brought home from his time in Germany and how he incorporates them into the overall framework of his movies.

Jack "One round" Sander (Carl Brisson) is a fairground attraction working as a boxer. He has never been defeated and apparently he usually knocks his opponents out in the first round, hence his nickname. The owners daughter Mabel (Lillian Hall-Davis) with whom he is engaged to be married, works as the ticket seller while her dad rouses the passers by to enter the "show".

One day a tall and handsome fellow comes by and is "provoked" into facing Jack in a match. What Jack does not know is, that his challenger in fact is heavyweight champion Bob Corby (Ian Hunter) and he is beaten for the first time. Mabel´s is aroused by the sight of this strong, dominating man and his charms makes her desire him instead of Jack.

Secretly Bob buys an arm bracelet for Mabel and she lies by telling Jack that Bob bought the bracelet for her not really wanting the money he won in the fight. Meanwhile Bob´s manager is impressed with his skills and offers him a trial match to become Bob´s sparring boxing partner. Mabel looks reluctant when she agrees to marry Jack if he wins the match.

Bob jokes at the marriage, that he wished he had won Mabel instead of the money at their first fight. Jack understand what he is up to and they fight another fight as a show off. Bob wins once more and he keeps hitting at Mabel who is still more attracted to Bob. Jack finally realize that something is rotten and he wants to get Bob down. But since he is out of Bob´s league he has to fight a number of fights to advance to his level.

When he finally reaches the world title against Bob, he wants to surprise Mabel in their home and has invited all his boxing friends. But Mabel does not show up and they wait for her all evening until the friends leave. When she finally turns up late at night in Bob´s fancy car, Jack confronts her obvious attempt at cuckolding him and they have a row. Jack lets Bob know that he is the contender for the title at a nightclub and in a drunk fight Jack hits Bob to the floor.

The day of the title match finally arrives. This is going to be the fight that settles it all. Bob looks like a winner from the get go and Jack looks more and more beaten. Mabel is in the audience and seing Jack getting close to defeat, rushes up to the ring to tell him, that she wants him after all. Reinvigorated with this news he pulls his last energi out and ends up defeating Bob.

Despite the potential action environment of the boxing ring, the plot never gets beyond average melodramatic story telling. The cuckolding provoked menage a trois is quite predictable and the boxing scenes are not that impressive. The three main characters are stereotypical silent era personalities. What lifts this movie to special hights are the added "spices", in the form of delicious expressionist bits and pieces all the way through. I have deliberately chosen screenshots that pinpoint these lovely shots that really fascinates me. Honestly I have no problem sitting through an average melodrama, if such creativity is thrown in for kicks, at a steady frequency.

The scene where Jack promises to marry her is shot as a reflection in the water. When her "cuckold" bracelet falls off, it disturbs the water and distorts the image of the "perfect pair". Actually there are "rings" all over the place. He works in the boxing-"ring", his nickname is "one-round" (a fancy way of describing a circle), he indicates their promised marriage by a ring and her affair with the alpha male stranger is also represented by a bracelet "ring". Then there are the rings in the water, that disturbs the image of the perfect couple. Talk about symbolism !

The scene with the distorted piano keys with string instruments and a phonograph multi exposure is pure german expressionism and then there is the shot of Jack through doorways to a reflection from another room. Very evocative and mood setting. The comic relief is one of his boxing buddies and during the wedding he drinks a few pints too much and then his vision slides out of focus and he slowly falls down. All made in a single shot of a distorted reflection i suppose. These shots are worth it all and i suppose it may be too little for some, but I will recommend it nevertheless. One point I would want to add is, that the plot is generally described as "two men fighting for a girl", while the truth is really "A girl lying to her man about an affair she has with his rival"
