Film Review: The Rookie (2002)@drax999d
What many American boys, at least those in 20th Century, had dreamt about, became reality for the protagonist of The Rookie, 2002 sports biopic directed by John Lee Hancock. Young Jim Morris (played by Trevor Morgan) wanted to professional baseball player, competing in MLB. But after promising start, his career was cut short by series of injuries and surgical operations so Morris, now as a grown man (played by Dennis Quaid), must reconcile with less glamorous job of high school physics teacher in small town of Park Lane, Texas. The only contact with baseball is high school team he coaches and tries to advance in regional championship. The team doesn’t fare well until players realise that their coach has unusual pitching skills. Joaquin “Wack” Campos (played by Jay Hernandez), one of the players, makes a pact with Morris – if they win the championship, he would offer his services as player to MLB teams. When the championship is won, Morris reluctantly and with opposition by his wife Lori (played by Rachel Griffiths) decides to make his side of the bargain. While MLB scouts are impressed with his skills, they are doubtful over his old age at first they send him to minor leagues so Morris has to travel around the country with players young enough to be his children. But his moment finally arrives and he is brought to Tampa Bay Devil Rays and has his chance for pitching in game against Texas Rangers.
The Rookie shows Hollywood’s ability to make big story out of something that could be seen as banal and uninteresting. Despite Morris getting attention as one of the oldest MLB Major League rookies, he wasn’t exactly household name except the most ardent fans of America’s favourite pastime. Morris had good fortune to have one of Hollywood’s producers as his best friend, so it became almost inevitable that his story would be turn another screen fairy tale. Produced by Disney, The Rookie takes predictable route of celebrating family values and personal sacrifices needed to make American Dream a reality. Despite predictability and sentimentalism, The Rookie works because of high professionalism and skill of those behind and in front of camera. Dennis Quaid is good in one of the rare starring roles at the latter stages of his career, while Rachel Griffiths and Brian Cox (playing protagonist’s father) are more than satisfactory. Direction by John Lee Hancock is also good and two hours of running time pass very quickly. Carter Burwell’s soundtrack is, on the other hand, quite disappointing, but The Rookie, despite such flaw, is more than solid piece of cinema that could be recommended to all those yearning for old-fashioned family entertainment.
This is a television series created for the ABC network for ABC by Alexi Hawley, based on real events, it revolves around John Nolan a forty-five year old man, who after a divorce and failure in his construction company, travels to Los Angeles and becomes the oldest rookie in the Police Department of that city.
It premiered in October 2018 and the series has already been screened for 5 seasons and in April 2023 it was renewed for a sixth.
In the same the viewer can follow the different police procedures that are performed and how hard the training is for rookies, also shows the wrong perception about the use of firearms cheerfully by law enforcement officers.
It stars Nathan Fillion, well known for starring in another successful TV series called Castle, where he portrayed a writer who was romantically involved with a female police officer, and also for portraying Captain Malcolm Reynolds in the series Firefly.
Joining him as newcomers are Melissa O'Neil as Lucy Chen, known for winning, in 2005, the third season of Canadian Idol, and as she is known for her roles as Two / Rebecca / Portia Lin in the Syfy sci-fi series Dark Matter, and Titus Makin as Jackson West, who was only on for the first 3 seasons.
It has aired 98 episodes of 43 minutes and has maintained an audience rating of over 4 points with positive opinions from the public who consider it funny and with themes that fit the real world.
Personally, it is one of the few series that I watch as a family and I think that despite the change of some characters, it has kept the audience's interest without losing its essence.

Welcome dear internet travelers lovers of police procedures and thank you very much for having made a temporary stop in my post, how will you know (And if you do not know I will tell you jajaja) I am a lover of police series but having so many in emission I have become selective about which to see what differs from the rest, that is why "The Rookie" has become my favorite choice to quench my thirst for police series, the season I will talk about today has been released for a while although I had not had time to take a look until today. Just put on your bulletproof vests and get ready to show some newbies that we're about to get started.
Bienvenidos queridos viajeros del internet amantes de los procedimientos policiales y muchas gracias por haber hecho una parada temporal en mi post, cómo sabrán (Y si no lo saben se los diré jajaja) soy amante de las series policiales pero al haber tantas en emisión me he vuelto selectivo con respecto a cuál ver qué se diferencia del resto, es por ello que "The Rookie" se ha vuelto mi elección predilecta para saciar mi sed de series policíacas, la temporada de la que hablaré hoy lleva un tiempo que se estrenó aunque no había tenido tiempo de echarle un vistazo hasta hoy. Sin más que agregar pónganse sus chalecos antibalas y prepárense para enseñar a algunos novatos que estamos por comenzar.

The 4th season of this series premiered in 2021, directed by Alexi Hawley and produced by ABC Studios, has a total of 22 chapters of an approximate duration of 43 minutes. It is a story of police drama, they bring us back most of the past characters being that others will sadly die, having new roles within the department and having to face new situations both professional and personal everything will become more tense and difficult if you have to go out to face various thugs.
La 4.ª temporada de esta serie fue estrenada en 2021, dirigida Alexi Hawley y producida por ABC Studios, cuenta con un total de 22 capítulos de una duración aproximada de 43 minutos. Es una historia de drama policial, nos traen de nuevo a la mayoría de personajes pasados siendo que otros tristemente fallecerán, teniendo nuevos roles dentro del departamento y debiendo enfrentarse a nuevas situaciones tanto profesionales como personales todo se volverá más tenso y difícil si tienes que salir a enfrentar a diversos maleantes.

The soundtrack is nice, I mentioned it before and I will repeat it is an addition that is very well achieved, both for comedy and for tense moments is a section in which it adapts perfectly to the different things that are presented.
La banda sonora es agradable, lo he mencionado con anterioridad y lo repetiré es un añadido que está muy bien logrado, tanto para la comedia como para los momentos tensos es un apartado en el cual se adapta perfectamente a las diferentes cosas que se presentan.

The construction of the world is nothing spectacular, it remains simple when showing the day to day of the Los Angeles police, in turn it shows the daily life of the men and women who wear the uniform of the law, it is simple but said simplicity is where the grace of the matter lies, see scenarios as realistic as possible so that in general the series feels plausible.
La construcción de mundo no es nada espectacular, se mantiene simple al mostrar el día a día de los policías de Los Angeles, a su vez se muestra la vida cotidiana de los hombres y mujeres que portan el uniforme de la ley, es simple pero dicha simpleza es donde radica la gracia del asunto, ver escenarios lo más realista posible para que en general la serie se sienta plausible.

The plot follows an almost episodic rhythm, presents good comedy and action so it does not feel tedious at any time, in turn it should be noted that it continues to stay fresh even with the fact of being already in its 4th season. This season was characterized by not having a fixed course, things happened and were resolved without much dilemma, they continued with the next case and so on, despite seeming boring it is logical since it tries to capture the day to day of the officers. This leaves us with a simple narrative to follow that has no complicated aspirations nor does it really pretend to be deep in any of its aspects.
La trama sigue un ritmo casi episódico, presenta buena comedia y acción por lo que no se siente tediosa en ningún momento, a su vez hay que destacar que sigue manteniéndose fresca aún con el hecho de estar ya en su 4.ª temporada. Está temporada se caracterizó por no tener un rumbo fijo, pasaban cosas y se resolvían sin mucho dilema, seguían con el próximo caso y así sucesivamente, pese a parecer aburrido es lo lógico puesto que intenta plasmar el día a día de los oficiales. Esto nos deja con una narrativa sencilla de seguir que no tiene aspiraciones complicadas ni pretende realmente ser profunda en ninguno de sus aspectos.

As each season is presented to each main character, a predicament with which they must deal if they want to move forward with their lives and careers, obviously there are some characters who had more focus than others but at the end of the day it was also felt that most problems were solved satisfactorily. In terms of growth and development of characters is still not something remarkable, all the characters solve their predicaments although few are those that really evolve due to adversity that is why I will only highlight Nolan and Harper to be the best detailed and that presented a better growth as characters. I will not single out any antagonist since they were all bad because yes, without really presenting a decent job that makes them stand out in some way, a rather regrettable lack.
Como cada temporada se le plantea a cada personaje protagonista, un predicamento con el cual deberán lidiar si desean seguir adelante con sus vidas y carreras, evidentemente hay algunos personajes que tuvieron mayor foco que otros pero al final del día igualmente se sintió que la mayoría de problemas fueron resueltos de forma satisfactoria. En cuanto a crecimiento y desarrolló de personajes sigue sin ser algo destacable, todos los personajes resuelven sus predicamentos aunque pocos son los que realmente evolucionan debido a la adversidad es por ello que solo destacaré a Nolan y Harper al ser los mejor detallados y que presentaron un mejor crecimiento como personajes. No destacaré a ningún antagonista puesto que todos fueron malos porque si, sin realmente presentar un trabajo decente que los haga destacar de alguna forma, una carencia bastante lamentable.
The Rookie in its 4th season is entertaining to watch a police drama although if it is put on the magnifying glass you can appreciate its various shortcomings, all this leaves it as a show that although it is not terrible it is noted that it does not aspire to have complex elements at any time. That's why I give it a rating of 3.5 stars out of 7, it's the typical series to watch and laugh at simple things.
The Rookie en su 4.ª temporada resulta entretenida para ver un drama policial aunque si se pone sobre la lupa se podrán apreciar sus diversas carencias, todo esto la deja como un show que si bien no es terrible se nota que no aspira a tener en ningún momento elementos complejos. Es por ello que le doy una calificación de 3.5 estrellas de 7, es la serie típica para ver y reírse de cosas simples.

When you have decades-long and fruitful filmography like Clint Eastwood, it is certain that some of the titles would be significantly better than others. But it is also certain that some of the titles would be significantly worse. Eastwood’s 1990 action film The Rookie belongs to the latter category.
Eastwood, who directed the film, also stars in the role of one of two protagonists, Sergeant Nick Pulovski, middle-aged Los Angeles police detective who works in seemingly unglamorous LAPD division dealing with car thefts. The plot begins when Pulovski tries to set up trap for Strom (played by Raul Julia), flamboyant German criminal who leads particularly successful but also very dangerous car theft ring. The attempts fails with Pulovski having his partner Powell (played by Hal Williams) killed. His replacement comes in the form of young and inexperienced policeman David Ackerman (played by Charlie Sheen) who initially wants to work by the book and doesn’t approve of Pulovski’s methods that include cutting corners and going against superiors’ orders and procedures. Pulovski is nevertheless determined to bring down Strom, but he proves to be and resourceful opponent, forcing both policemen to use all of their skills and ingenuity not only to catch him, but to merely survive increasingly exhaustive and destructive hunt.
Eastwood’s main intention with The Rookie was to prove big audience that he could be as big action star in 1990s as he was in 1980s. However, he took some measures to adapt to new circumstances – first, by using buddy cop formula, which had worked wonders even for some less charismatic actors than him and, second, by partnering with Charlie Sheen, young actor who was one of the “hottest” stars at the time and who was supposed to bring younger viewers to cinema. The film, however, failed despite, in strictly technical sense, working as buddy cop film. The main reason for failure that The Rookie represents rather unpleasant experience even for the fans of Eastwood and buddy cop genre. This is the responsibility of scriptwriters Scott Spiegel and Boaz Yakin who made protagonist unusually dislikeable. Eastwood’s character, apart from being burdened by cliches, is violent, arrogant, irresponsible and prone to unfunny jokes and offending any people in sight. Sheen’s character starts as rich man’s son with perfect academic record who never bothers to explain why he chose unglamorous and dangerous career on the mean streets of Los Angeles. Later in the film he transforms in another, even more extreme version of Pulovski who beats, tortures, intimidates people and create unnecessary mayhem in pursuit of justice; he even turns out to be completely insensitive towards his frustrated girlfriend (played by Lara Flynn Boyle in completely forgettable and thankless role) at the worst possible moment. Later, both men prove to be even more irresponsible by risking lives of thousands of innocent people at the airport during the final showdown. Scriptwriters, apparently aware that the protagonists are too problematic, try to make villains even more despicable, but their efforts fail because of poor characterisation.
Eastwood as director doesn’t fare any better. He has gathered large budget for the film and spent it on the small army of dedicated stuntmen, various luxury cars and pyrotechnics used in couple of impressive action scenes. However, all this effort is wasted due to Eastwood’s prompting his cinematographer Jack N. Green to use darker tones, in apparent attempt to match grittyness of 1970s police films. This only makes film even more confusing and less pleasant to watch. Those who endure the experience would, on the other hand, get insight in what kinds of things star of Eastwood’s stature could have gotten away with in film many decades ago. It turns out, with lot. Main villains, despite being written as Germans, are played by Latin American actors and in those times such casting decision cause many critics to scratch heads and start talking about cultural appropriation or implicit racism. Even more controversies was caused by the scene in which Eastwood’s characters gets raped by a woman – Strom’s cold and associate Liesl, played by famed Brazilian actress Sonia Braga. This scene was accused as exploitative and misogynistic. Such controversies, on the other hand, weren’t cause by finale in which Pulovski handles the main villain in such cold-blooded fashion that would lead to international war crimes investigation if handled in real life.
Those controversies, however, didn’t help the film. Problems with pace and obvious lack of chemistry between Eastwood and Sheen didn’t win audience and the critics were more hostile than usual. Most who watch the film today would agree that the bad box office results were quite deserved and some may argue that The Rookie represents the worst film of Eastwood’s entire career. Yet, his next film, “Oscar”-winning western Unforgiven turned into his greatest triumph, showing again how difficult is to judge a film maker by a single work.

The plot revolves around John Nolan, a man who in his 40s decides to turn his life around by moving to Los Angeles and fulfilling his dream of becoming a police officer, evidently his age brings controversies both with his bosses and with some of his colleagues When considering on more than one occasion that he does not have the necessary skills to be able to fulfill the position, all this leads to him having to work twice as hard as an average rookie.
The Rookie es una serie policial, fue estrenada en 2018 y creada para ABC por Alexi Hawley, tiene 4 temporadas y actualmente 61 capítulos (Aunque su última temporada está en emisión actualmente por lo que este número variara pronto) sus episodios tienen una duración de alrededor 43 minutos. La trama gira en torno a John Nolan, un hombre que a sus 40 años decide darle un giro a su vida mudándose a Los Ángeles y cumpliendo su sueño de volverse policía, evidentemente su edad trae controversias tanto con sus jefes como con algunos de sus compañeros al considerar en más de una ocasión que no cuenta con las habilidades necesarias para poder cumplir con el cargo, todo esto conlleva a que tenga que esforzarse el doble que un novato promedio.

He is the main protagonist of the series, at the age of 40 he suffered an event that showed him that he wanted to redirect his life to do something in which he can protect other people, however his decision will be reproached by a large number of people.

Like Nolan is a rookie, she has known him from the academy so she is one of the ones that gives her the most support by following her dreams and being able to try to make a difference. Just as Nolan has obstacles because of her age, Lucy has them because she is a woman and is somewhat small.
Al igual que Nolan es una novata, lo conoce desde la academia por lo que es una de la que más apoyo le da con el hecho de seguir sus sueños y de poder intentar marcar la diferencia. Así como Nolan tiene obstáculos por su edad, Lucy los tiene por ser mujer y ser algo pequeña.

He is the one that completes the trio of friends, he was in the academy with Lucy and Nolan, in addition to all the challenges that a rookie of the police has, this carries even more weight because he comes from a family of policemen, and his father is the director of internal affairs who simply increases his own pressure to outperform you in every way possible.

Apart from the rookies there are the officers who are in charge of training the new ones who are Angela López, West's coach, Tim Bradford, Lucy's coach and Talia Bishop, Nolan's coach. Also present are Zoe Andersen, the department captain and Wade Gray, the guard commander of Nolan's division, since the beginning Nolan considered him a threat to him and his companions. They are also very interesting characters but I do not detail them because the novices have more prominence and thus I avoid making the post longer than it already is (Although it is more for the second one).
Aparte de los novatos existen los oficiales que se encargan de entrenar a los nuevos que son Ángela López la entrenadora de West, Tim Bradford el entrenador de Lucy y Talia Bishop la entrenadora de Nolan. También se encuentran presentes Zoe Andersen la capitana del departamento y Wade Grey el comandante de guardia de la división de Nolan, desde que inicio Nolan lo considero una amenaza para él y sus compañeros. Son personajes también muy interesantes pero no los detallo porque los novatos tienen más protagonismo y así evito hacer el post más largo de lo que ya es (Aunque es más por la segunda).
The music is exactly what is expected of a series of policemen, it achieves that immersion of the spectator in the scene fulfilling the task of the same. I also have to emphasize that his song of the intro seems to me very catchy.
La música es exactamente lo que se espera de una serie de policías, logra esa inmersión del espectador en la escena cumpliendo el cometido de la misma. También he de destacar que su canción de la intro me parece muy pegadiza.
The construction of the world is very well achieved since the risk that the profession entails is perfectly represented, said danger not only says it but also shows it with the death of certain characters, the opposition of some communities to the police and acts of corruption within from the Department. Despite being elements that are usually present in other series, it is something that needs to be addressed since it is something attached to reality. Another element that also seems correct to me is that absolutely all the characters have their own professional and personal problems, but we'll talk about that later.
La construcción de mundo está muy bien lograda puesto que se representa perfectamente ese riesgo que conlleva la profesión, dicho peligro no solo lo dice sino que lo demuestra con la muerte de ciertos personajes, la oposición de algunas comunidades a la policía y actos de corrupción dentro del departamento. Pese a ser elementos que suelen estar presentes en otras series es algo que necesita ser abordar puesto que es algo apegado a la realidad. Otro elemento que también me parece correcto es que absolutamente todos los personajes tienen sus propios problemas tanto profesionales como personales pero de eso hablaremos más adelante.
The plot despite running the risk of becoming generic like countless other police series does not feel common, as I mentioned previously this is because it knows how to correctly use various elements of comedy to avoid being totally serious all the time. The emergencies that they tend to pose many times can be more dangerous than what is appreciated at first glance and vice versa, being that you never know what to expect from a chapter in general, the only thing that could be criticized is that sometimes there is not as much action as one would expect this type of series to be most of the problems solved peacefully or simply more of a joke than a threat.
La trama pese a correr el riesgo de tornarse genérica al igual que incontables otras series de policías no se siente común, como mencione previamente esto se debe a que sabe utilizar correctamente diversos elementos de comedia para poder evitar ser totalmente serios todo el tiempo. Las emergencias que suelen plantear muchas veces pueden resultar más peligrosas de lo que se aprecia a simple vista y viceversa, siendo que nunca se sabe que esperar de un capítulo en general, lo único que si podría criticarse es que a veces no existe tanta acción como se esperaría de este tipo de series siendo la mayoría de los problemas resueltos pacíficamente o sencillamente más un chiste que una amenaza.
The characters are extremely charismatic and the characterization that each of these has had is pleasant, being very easy to feel them as real people, each one has presented their own personal and work problems, however it is shown that both should be put aside before starting to patrol since being distracted can mean death. These problems are usually very varied, from lack of family support for the chosen career or directly addicted relatives who put their lives at risk, simply use a perfect combination between problems that we all could have and problems of being police officers to put in difficult situations their characters.
Los personajes son sumamente carismáticos y es agradable la caracterización que ha tenido cada uno de estos siendo muy fácil sentirlos como personas reales, cada uno ha presentado sus propios problemas tanto personales como laborales sin embargo se demuestra que ambos deben ser dejados de lado antes de empezar a patrullar puesto que estar distraídos puede significar la muerte. Dichos problemas suelen ser muy variados, desde falta de apoyo familiar por la carrera elegida o directamente familiares adictos que ponen su vida en riesgo, sencillamente usa una combinación perfecta entre problemas que todos podríamos tener y problemas de ser policías para poner en situaciones difíciles a sus personajes.
The Rookie is a series of cops that is not only about capturing the bad guys but also trying to introduce more credible characters that go beyond a basic sense of duty. For all this it deserves a rating of 4.5 stars out of 7, despite not having as much action as would be expected at least it has those personal problems and comedy that simply differentiate it from the rest.
The Rookie es una serie de policías que no solamente se trata de capturar a los malos sino que también intenta presentar a personajes más creíbles que vayan más allá de un básico sentido del deber. Por todo ello merece una calificación de 4,5 estrellas de 7, pese a no tener tanta acción como se esperaría por lo menos tiene esos problemas personales y comedia que sencillamente la diferencian del resto.
