Hello everyone, friends of The Anime Realm, I hope you are all doing great, this time I’m here to share a new review with you. After a long time, I finally got around to watching Tower of God, and well, it was time to talk a little about this series… Some of you have already watched it, it came out as one of those Crunchyroll originals, and I remember it made a bit of a splash because it comes from a Korean manhwa – mind you, manhwa, not manga! – that really hit it big on Webtoon… and the crazy thing is that, according to what they say, the original comic on Webtoon was a great success, although the drawing at first… well, let’s just say it wasn’t the best in the world, and that, honestly, just made me more curious, I mean, what did it have that made everyone read it? Well, the vibe is pretty crazy, there’s this GIANT and super mysterious Tower, right?… and the rumor is that if you get to the top, the Tower will grant you whatever you want, money, power, finding someone, whatever you want!
Almost everyone who enters is a “Chosen One”, they call them Regulars… but our main character, Bam –yes, that’s his name, Bam– is… different, the guy lived his whole life in the dark, literally, like at the bottom of the Tower or something, and his only companion, his only light, is a girl named Rachel… when Rachel decides she has to go up the Tower to see the stars (her dream, anyway), Bam, who loves her like crazy, boom!, goes in behind her, he’s an “Irregular”, that is, someone who wasn’t chosen but opened the door himself, and it seems that’s the big deal… and why does he want to go up? Just to find Rachel. That’s it… that’s his world at the beginning, now, let me tell you, the anime adaptation looks pre-cious-ly, whatever you said about the art of the manhwa at the beginning, forget it!
The studio did it really well, the animation is really smooth, the character designs are really unique (although some of the clothes are... sweatpants? Haha!), and the whole look fits perfectly with the weird, incredible, and often dangerous world of the Tower... it makes everything so much easier to watch and it's really cool. The fights hit hard and the places feel different as you go up floors... and the music! Oh my God, the music is AWESOME! That opening, "Top," by Stray Kids... is great, and the ending, "Slump," is like the perfect contrast, kind of melancholic but beautiful... and the background music in the episodes? A gem! It adds more tension to the trials, gives more power to the emotional moments, and makes the surprises hit you harder. Seriously, I wouldn't be surprised at all if this soundtrack ends up on everyone's playlists.
Hola a todos, amigos de The Anime Realm, espero que estén super bien, en esta ocasión les vengo a compartir una nueva reseña, luego de mucho tiempo, por fin pude ver Tower of God, y bueno, ya era momento de hablar un poco de esta serie.. Alguno de ustedes ya le entró, salió como uno de esos originales de Crunchyroll, y me acuerdo que hizo algo de ruido porque viene de un manhwa coreano –¡ojo, manhwa, no manga!– que la rompió durísimo en Webtoon.. y lo loco es que, según dicen, el cómic original en Webtoon pegó con todo, aunque el dibujo al principio… pues digamos que no era lo mejor del mundo, y eso, la verdad, nomás me dio más curiosidad, o sea, ¿qué tenía para que todo el mundo lo estuviera leyendo? Bueno, la onda está bastante loca, hay una Torre así GIGANTE y súper misteriosa, ¿va?.. y el chisme es que si llegas hasta arriba, la Torre te cumple lo que se te ocurra, plata, poder, encontrar a alguien, ¡lo que quieras!
Casi todos los que entran son "Elegidos", les dicen Regulares.. pero nuestro prota, Bam –sí, así se llama, Bam– es… diferente, el tipo vivió toda su vida en la oscuridad, literal, como abajo de la Torre o algo así, y su única compa, su única luz, es una chica que se llama Rachel... cuando Rachel decide que tiene que subir la Torre para ver las estrellas (su sueño, pues), Bam, que la adora con locura, ¡pum!, se mete detrás de ella, él es un "Irregular", o sea, alguien que no fue elegido pero abrió la puerta él solito, y parece que eso es la graaaan cosa.. y para qué quiere subir? Solo para encontrar a Rachel. Eso es todo.. ese es su mundo al inicio, ahora, déjenme decirles, la adaptación al anime se ve ¡pre-cio-sa, lo que sea que dijeran del arte del manhwa al principio, ¡olvídenlo!
El estudio lo hizo súper bien, la animación va suavecita, los diseños de personajes son bien únicos (aunque algunas ropas sean… ¿pants deportivos? ¡Jaja!), y todo el look le queda perfecto a ese mundo raro, increíble y muchas veces peligroso de la Torre.. hace que todo sea mucho más fácil de ver y está súper chido. Las peleas pegan duro y los lugares se sienten distintos mientras van subiendo de piso.. y la música! Ay, Dios mío, ¡la música es BRUTAL! ese opening, "Top", de los Stray Kids… es genial, y el ending, "Slump", es como el contraste perfecto, medio melancólico pero hermoso.. y la musiquita de fondo en los episodios? ¡Una joya! Le mete más tensión a las pruebas, le da más fuerza a los momentos emotivos y hace que las sorpresas te peguen más duro, en serio, no me sorprendería nada si esta banda sonora acaba sus playlists
Well, back to the story, Bam enters the Tower, and the poor guy doesn't understand anything, he's completely lost, and honestly, at first he feels a little bit weird, but he does need a hand, but luckily, he's not alone for long, he immediately meets other Regulars who also want to go up, and this is where, for me, the series gets really good! There's Koon Aguero Agnis, a super smart, somewhat calculating guy with blue hair, who clearly has his fair share of mystery (you know, the kind that carries a backpack full of secrets), and my favorite, but MY FAVORITE!, Rak Wraithraiser. Rak is... let me see how I can explain it, he's like a giant crocodile, but he walks on two legs, carries a spear, calls everyone "turtle", and at first he just wants to hunt Bam (the "Black Turtle"). Haha! But somehow, these three who have nothing to do with each other get together, and Rak gives it a super direct and chaotic vibe that is ufff, the best thing, he's the one who makes you laugh, but he's also surprisingly loyal, in his own really weird way.
The mix between Bam, who doesn't break a plate, Koon, who is thinking a thousand things, and the... well, the 'Rak-thingness' of Rak! ... is entertaining, they meet a ton of other characters, a ton of weird and cool people competing to go up, each one with their own problems. The thing about going up the Tower is that you have to pass tests on each floor... and yeah, let's see, let's get it out of the way! This whole thing screams HUNTER EXAM from Hunter x Hunter, but at the top of its lungs, eh! There are tests of strength, of thinking, of working as a team, of surviving, games with complicated rules... it's impossible not to be reminded of HxH, really... what if it's just as complex and blows your mind like the Hunter Exam? Mmm, maybe not all the time... some of the tests are well thought out and lead to cool moments of strategy—there was one about catching friends and another about "trade-ins" that were actually good.
But others... felt simpler, or the solutions were sort of pulled out of thin air, perhaps taking advantage of the fact that Bam has some special luck or a hidden power that even he doesn't understand. The HxH inspiration is obvious, but it takes its own path, but what really had me glued was the MYSTERY. The series thrives on that. What the heck is the Tower? Who made it? How does it work? Why does it grant wishes? It's not just the Tower; each character seems to have their own little secrets. Why do they climb it? What are they hiding? What can they really do? The series drops little crumbs, clues about the world, about important families, about history, but more than anything, it just leaves you with more questions. Normally, that would drive me a little crazy, but here it just made me want to know MORE... you spend your time trying to put the puzzle together.
Bueno, volviendo a la historia, Bam entra a la Torre, y el pobre no entiende nada, está perdidísimo, y la verdad, al principio es como que te da un poquito de cosa, pero sí necesita que le echen una mano, pero por suerte, no se queda solito mucho rato, al toque se encuentra con otros Regulares que también quieren subir, y aquí es donde, para mí, la serie se pone ¡buenísima! Está Koon Aguero Agnis, un compa de pelo azul súper listo, medio calculador, que se nota que trae su buen tema misterioso (ya saben, de esos que cargan su mochila de secretos), y mi favorito, ¡pero mi FAVORITO!, Rak Wraithraiser. Rak es… a ver cómo les explico, es como un cocodrilo gigante, pero que camina en dos patas, trae una lanza, le dice "tortuga" a todo el mundo, y al principio nomás quiere cazar a Bam (la "Tortuga Negra"). ¡Jaja! Pero de alguna forma, estos tres que nada que ver se juntan, y Rak le mete una onda súper directa y caótica que es ufff, lo mejor, es el que te hace reír, pero también es sorprendentemente leal, a su modo bien raro.
La mezcla entre Bam, que no rompe un plato, Koon, que anda pensando mil cosas, y la… pues ¡la 'Rak-cosidad' de Rak! ... es entretenido, conocen a un montón de personajes más, un montón de gente rara y chida compitiendo por subir, cada uno con sus propios problemas. La onda para subir la Torre es que tienes que pasar pruebas en cada piso.. y sí, a ver, ¡digámoslo de una vez! Toda esta movida grita EXAMEN DE CAZADOR de Hunter x Hunter, pero ¡a todo pulmón, eh! Hay pruebas de fuerza, de pensarle, de trabajar en equipo, de sobrevivir, juegos con reglas complicadas... es imposible no acordarse de HxH, la verdad.. que si es igual de complejo y te vuela la cabeza como el Examen de Cazador? Mmm, talvez no todo el tiempo.. algunas pruebas sí están bien pensadas y llevan a momentos chidos de estrategia – hubo una de atrapar compas y otra como de las traes que sí estuvieron buenas.
Pero otras… se sintieron más simples, o las soluciones como que se las sacaron de la manga, tal vez abusando un poco de que Bam tiene una suerte especial o un poder escondido que ni él entiende. Se nota la inspiración en HxH, obvio, pero agarra su propio camino, pero lo que de verdad me tuvo ahí pegado fue el MISTERIO. La serie vive de eso. ¿Qué diablos es la Torre? ¿Quién la hizo? ¿Cómo funciona? ¿Por qué cumple deseos? no es solo la Torre, cada personaje parece tener sus secretitos. ¿Por qué suben? ¿Qué esconden? ¿Qué saben hacer en realidad? La serie te va soltando como migajitas, pistas del mundo, de las familias importantes, de la historia, pero más que nada, nomás te deja con más preguntas, normalmente eso me desesperaría un poco, pero aquí como que nomás hacía que quisiera saber MÁS.. te la pasas intentando armar el rompecabezas.
And speaking of interesting things, there’s a plot twist near the end of the first season. Obviously, I’m not going to spoil it for you, not a chance! But WOW! It completely changes your perspective on a lot of things you’ve already seen… maybe you had a hunch, or it hits you like a bucket of cold water, but it’s one of those twists that, ugh!, gives you something to talk about for a LONG time… It definitely raises the bar for some characters, makes them seem much more complex than you initially thought, especially the Rachel thing! It was… shocking! Yeah, let’s just leave it there. Now, is it perfect? Well no, as much as I love the main trio –Bam, Koon and Rak are the best–, I feel like some secondary characters are kind of left… half-baked, in these first 13 episodes… they give you glimpses into their pasts or why they do things (like with Androssi or Anaak, who seem interesting), but they still don’t really get into them, and the power system, this thing called “Shinsu” –which is like a mystical energy that is all over the Tower– is left super ambiguous, on purpose it seems.
You see the characters use it in really cool ways, making barriers, explosions or getting stronger, it looks great! But how does it actually work? What are the rules? They don’t explain it well, which makes that sometimes, when Bam suddenly unleashes a new power or is saved by a miracle, it feels kind of… pulled out of thin air, right? They rely heavily on the fact that it's 'Irregular' and that's it, instead of rules we already know... at times, you feel like it lacks that extra layer of depth, whether it's explaining the world better or the characters' stories…
Y hablando de cosas que son interesantes, hay un giro en la trama, casi al final de esta primera temporada, obvio no les voy a spoilear, ¡ni loco!, pero ¡GUAU! Te cambia por completo la perspectiva de un montón de cosas que ya habías visto.. tal vez ya te olías algo, o te cae como balde de agua fría, pero es de esos giros que ¡uff!, dan para hablar un BUEN rato.. Definitivamente le sube el nivel a algunos personajes, los hace ver mucho más complejos de lo que pensabas al principio, ¡especialmente lo de Rachel! Fue… ¡impactante! Sí, mejor ahí la dejamos. Ahora, ¿es perfecta? pues no, por más que ame al trío principal –Bam, Koon y Rak son lo máximo–, siento que algunos personajes secundarios se quedan medio… a medias, en estos primeros 13 episodios.. te dan como probaditas de sus pasados o de por qué hacen las cosas (como con Androssi o Anaak, que se ven interesantes), pero todavía no les entran a fondo, y el sistema de poder, eso que llaman "Shinsu" –que es como una energía mística que está por toda la Torre– lo dejan súper ambiguo, a propósito parece.
Ves a los personajes usarla de formas bien chidas, haciendo barreras, explosiones o poniéndose más fuertes, ¡se ve genial! Pero ¿cómo funciona en realidad? ¿Cuáles son las reglas? no te explican bien, eso hace que a veces, cuando Bam de repente saca un poder nuevo o se salva de milagro, se sienta medio… sacado de la manga, ¿no? Se apoyan mucho en que es 'Irregular' y ya, en lugar de reglas que ya conozcamos.. a ratos, como que sientes que le falta esa capita extra de profundidad, ya sea explicando mejor el mundo o las historias de los personajes..
But the truth is, the series has its style, the action is great, the music is great, the main characters grab you and the main mystery has you there, thinking and thinking... that ending left me hooked! I'm going to watch the second season soon, for being the first season of a really long story, it really hooks you in really well, it manages to feel like a classic shonen adventure, but at the same time it has a darker, weirder touch and you don't know where it's going to come out. So, my final opinion? I give it an 8/10, it entertained me and for the potential that is clearly! seen, it manages to bring this unique world of manhwa to life with some brutal drawings and sound! It introduces you to characters that you really care about and keeps you glued with the constant mystery, if you are looking for some fantasy and action, then you should give it a chance... and well, that's all for today, I hope you liked this review, I'll leave the opening below, take care, bye.
Pero la verdad, la serie tiene su estilo, la acción está buenísima, la música es genial, los personajes principales te atrapan y el misterio principal te tiene ahí, pensando y pensando.. ese final me dejó ¡picadísimo!, pronto voy a ver la segunda temporada, para ser la primera temporada de una historia larguísima, la verdad te engancha súper bien, logra sentirse como una aventura shonen de las clásicas, pero al mismo tiempo tiene un toque más oscuro, más raro y como que no sabes por dónde te va a salir. Así que, ¿mi opinión final? le doy un 8/10, me entretuvo y por el potencial que ¡claramente! se le ve, logra que este mundo único del manhwa cobre vida con unos dibujos y un sonido ¡brutales!, te presenta personajes que de verdad te importan y te tiene pegado con el misterio constante, si andan buscando algo de fantasía y accion, pues deberían darle una oportunidad.. y bueno, hasta aquí todo por hoy, espero que les haya gustado esta reseña les déjate el opening más abajo, cuidense, byebye.
