Plot
The film begins at a mansion in Switzerland, where a nighttime party is underway with dozens of important guests. The place is swarming with security everywhere, but a spy still manages to successfully infiltrate the venue and pose as a dealer in antique artifacts. His name is Harry Tasker, and with the help of his team—Albert “Gib” Gibson and Faisil—he manages to hack into the computer of the mansion’s owner, who appears to be a billionaire. Meanwhile, Harry meets a woman named Juno Skinner, an art dealer who works for the owner. He asks her to dance as he slips past security.

This is another movie that, surprisingly, was also a big part of my childhood and early teens. Yes, it’s an action movie—violent, with scenes of partial nudity, and humor that would be considered pretty raunchy by today’s standards. If you ask me what on earth I was doing watching a movie like that as a kid, all I can say is that I wasn’t being supervised closely enough. However, that humor and the level of action and violence were what set it apart from most action movies of that era. Not to mention that it was directed by one of the great geniuses behind two of the biggest sci-fi franchises of that time.
It was interesting to see how James Cameron took a break from sci-fi to direct this sort of American “remake” of the aforementioned French detective comedy. Honestly, I had no idea back then that he was the one who directed this movie, but it’s because of the coincidence of having discovered this film when I was young that I love it now more than ever. Of course, right now I see it as just another run-of-the-mill action-comedy, a genre that has become quite popular since then.
Esta es otra película que, sorprendentemente, también ha formado parte de mi infancia y preadolescencia. Si, una película de acción, violenta y con escenas de semidesnudos sumado a un humor bastante obsceno para la generación actual. Si me preguntan qué rayos estaba haciendo yo viendo una película así cuando era niño solo les puedo decir que no tenía la suficiente supervisión. Sin embargo, dicho humor y nivel de acción y violencia fue lo que lo destacó por sobre la mayoría de películas de acción de aquella época. Eso sin mencionar que lo dirigió uno de los grandes genios que estuvo detrás de dos de las franquicias más grandes de la ciencia ficción de aquella época.
Fue interesante ver cómo James Cameron se tomó un descanso de la ciencia ficción para dirigir esta especie de “remake” americano de la ya mencionada comedia de detectives francesa. Honestamente, no tenía ni idea en aquel entonces de que fue él quien dirigió esta película, pero es debido a la casualidad de haber conocido esta cinta desde pequeño me hizo quererla ahora más que nunca. Claro, ahora mismo la veo como una película más de acción y comedia del montón, cosa que se ha popularizado bastante desde aquel entonces.

But I consider this film to be one of the most iconic of all time because of the way its plot influenced an entire generation that grew up watching it alongside other similar Hollywood films. Because, yes, something I’ve noticed a lot in other action and comedy movies I’ve watched since I was a kid was their similarity in terms of plot, narrative, or styles of crude, adult humor. This may serve as a sign of just how much this James Cameron film influenced people back then. And it’s no surprise if we remember what the movie is about.
The film tells the story of a detective and family man named Harry Tasker who keeps his detective work a secret at home, pretending to be a simple computer salesman who spends all his time working and traveling, so he’s almost never home. Then, when Harry tries to make amends with his wife Helen due to his constant absence, he accidentally finds out that she’s seeing another man named Simon. Depressed, Harry decides to use his resources and position as a member of a national and private intelligence agency to secretly spy on his wife.
Pero considero que esta película es de las más icónicas de todas debido a la forma en la que su trama influyó en toda una generación que creció viéndola junto con otras cintas similares de Hollywood. Porque sí, algo que he notado mucho en otras películas de acción y comedia que he visto desde pequeño era su similitud en cuanto a trama, narrativa o estilos de humor rancio y para adultos. Esto puede servir como señal de lo mucho que llegó a influenciar esta película de James Cameron en aquella época. Y no es de extrañar esto si recordamos de qué trata la misma.
La película nos cuenta la historia de un detective y padre de familia llamado Harry Tasker quien mantiene en secreto su trabajo detectivesco en casa, haciéndose pasar por un simple vendedor de computadoras que se la pasa trabajando y haciendo viajes todo el tiempo que casi nunca está en casa. Entonces, cuando Harry intenta hacer las paces con su esposa Helen debido a su enorme ausencia, se entera sin querer de que ella está viéndose con otro tipo llamado Simon. I suppose you’ve already figured out why this movie is so entertaining and iconic. It’s not just the typical plot where the protagonist is a detective who spends his time investigating or fighting an evil organization to save the world. While we see that at the beginning, what’s eventually revealed later on is a romantic drama that quickly turns into a romantic comedy with plenty of action at the end. Perhaps the film’s narrative dynamism is what made so many people like it, as it set it apart from other generic action movies of the time.
Personally, I think the blend of comedy and action in this film is far more special than what we see in other modern movies. James Cameron did a great job of conveying typical American family issues alongside sexual, moral, social, and even political elements. There’s also the typical main plot that unfolds, which, interestingly, is very similar to that of James Bond. Especially in the way the protagonist is introduced—played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, by the way.
Supongo que ya se dieron cuenta del por qué es entretenida e icónica esta película. No solo es la típica trama del protagonista que es detective y se la pasa investigando o luchando contra una organización malvada para salvar el mundo. Si bien esto lo vemos al principio, lo que se nos termina revelando más adelante es un drama romántico que seguidamente se convierte en una comedia romántica con bastante acción al final. Tal vez el dinamismo narrativo que tiene la película hizo que a mucha gente le gustara ya que lo hacía diferente a otras películas de acción genéricas de la época.
Personalmente, considero que la mezcla de comedia con acción que tiene esta película es mucho más especial que lo que podemos llegar a ver en otras películas modernas. James Cameron consiguió transmitir muy bien los típicos problemas familiares estadounidenses junto con elementos sexuales, morales, sociales y hasta políticos. También está la típica trama principal que se desarrolla y que curiosamente es muy similar a la de James Bond. Sobre todo por la forma en la que presentan al protagonista, quien fue interpretado por Arnold Schwarzenegger, por cierto.

So, aside from Arnold’s standout comedic performance throughout the first half of the film, the lead doesn’t really stand out much beyond being the star of a ’90s action movie. I mention this because action movies back then weren’t the same as they are now, especially when they included comedy. Back then, censorship was very different from what we see today, especially when it comes to adult humor. I don’t mean to say that this is a particularly crude movie or one with very dark humor.
It’s just that it’s made for an adult audience, plain and simple. I say this because I don’t want my readers to make the same mistake my parents made with me back when I was just a kid and watched this movie in broad daylight on the TV at home. But anyway, the humor and the massive amount of action and explosions were the first things that stuck in my subconscious from this movie. Not to mention the iconic dance scene featuring a not-so-old Jamie Lee Curtis. But anyway, let’s just say that this movie forged a definite taste for this kind of film in my subconscious.
Así que, más allá de una actuación destacable a nivel humorístico de Arnold a lo largo de la primera mitad de la película, el protagonista no llega a destacar demasiado, más allá de ser un protagonista de una película de acción de los 90. Esto último lo menciono así ya que en aquella época las películas de acción no eran iguales a las que son ahora, mucho menos si tienen comedia. En aquel entonces la censura era muy distinta a la que vemos actualmente, sobre todo cuando hablamos de humor para adultos. No quiero decir con esto que sea una película bastante cruda o con un humor bastante negro.
Solo que está hecho para un público adulto como tal y ya. Digo esto porque no quiero que los que me lean cometan el mismo error que cometieron mis padres en su momento conmigo cuando era apenas un niño y veía esta película a plena luz del día en la televisión de mi casa. Pero bueno, el humor y la cantidad enorme de acción y explosiones fueron lo primero que se me quedó grabado en el subconsciente de esta película. Eso sin mencionar la icónica escena de baile de una Jamie Lee Curtis no tan mayor. Pero bueno, digamos que dicha película forjó en mi subconsciente un gusto definido por este tipo de cintas.

I had a lot of fun watching this movie, especially because of its humor, which I actually enjoyed much more now than I did before—maybe because of my age. The jokes about infidelity, men pretending to be interesting to attract women, satirical gags, and ironic scenes were what entertained me the most. Of course, along with this are the excellent amount of action, explosions, and chases the film features. Despite running just over two hours, the movie doesn’t have a single boring scene as such, alternating action and/or espionage sequences with funny and even absurd moments.
The performances aren’t bad either, aside from Arnold’s as the lead, leaving us with a few iconic scenes that are still widely referenced in popular culture today. Amy Lee Curtis also shows innate talent in this film, far from being the typical heroine who survives a psychopathic killer. The rest of the cast did a great job, as expected. With a similar amount of comedy as there is action, the film loses some of its seriousness or drama in much of its own story. That’s why it’s only worth watching to enjoy it and little else.
Me divertí mucho viendo esta película, sobre todo por el humor que tiene, lo cual actualmente llegué a disfrutar mucho más que antes debido a mi edad (tal vez). Los chistes de infidelidades, hombres simulando ser personas interesantes para atraer mujeres, bromas satíricas y escenas irónicas que tiene la película fueron lo que más me entretuvo. Claro, junto con esto están la excelente cantidad de acción, explosiones y persecuciones que tiene la misma. La película, a pesar de durar poco más de dos horas, no tiene ninguna escena aburrida como tal, sustituyendo secuencias de acción y/o espionaje con momentos graciosos y hasta absurdos.
Las actuaciones tampoco están mal, fuera de lo que realizó Arnold como protagonista, dejándonos una que otra escena bastante icónica y muy utilizada en la actualidad en la cultura popular. Amy Lee Curtis muestra también un talento innato en esta cinta, lejos de ser la típica protagonista que sobrevive a un asesino psicópata. De resto, el elenco de esta película hizo muy bien su trabajo, entre lo que se espera ver. Al tener una cantidad de comedia similar a la de acción, la película pierde cierta seriedad o drama en gran parte de su propia historia. Es por eso que solo sirve para verla, disfrutarla y poco más.

Unlike his other films, James Cameron doesn't do much here beyond simply creating his own take on the typical comedy-action movie of the decade. Still, as expected, the audiovisual aspects are what he executed particularly well. The use of cameras, shots, angles, visual elements, and varied color palettes is quite good. The same goes for the various action scenes featuring explosions, gunfire, and many other practical visual effects. Cameron always impresses us with these action scenes, giving us moments so surreal that they’re hard to forget.
The film also features a good number of computer-generated effects that aren’t very noticeable because they’re so well hidden and integrated. That said, what stands out most here are the practical effects like helicopters, planes, rockets, explosions, weapons, etc. The cinematography, shots, transitions, and use of both static and moving camera styles are quite well executed. The sound effects aren’t too shabby either, and the soundtrack really stands out in a few scenes. Anyway, here’s another James Cameron movie that might interest you.
Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 in terms of the action, romance, and comedy genres.
A diferencia de las otras películas que ha dirigido, James Cameron no hace gran cosa aquí, más allá de solamente hacer su propia versión de la típica película de comedia y acción de la década. Pero aún así, algo que hizo muy bien aquí es su apartado audiovisual, como era de esperarse. El uso de cámaras, enfoques, planos, elementos visuales y paletas de colores variados es bastante bueno. Lo mismo sucede con las distintas escenas de acción con explosiones, disparos y muchos otros recursos visuales prácticos. Cameron siempre nos impresiona con dichas escenas de acción, dándonos momentos tan surrealistas que son difíciles de olvidar.
La película también cuenta con una buena cantidad de efectos hechos por computadora que no se notan mucho en la misma debido a lo bien ocultas y agregadas que están. Igualmente, lo que más resalta aquí son los efectos prácticos como los helicópteros, aviones, cohetes, explosiones, armas, etc. Los estilos de fotografía, enfoques, transiciones y estilos de cámara fija o en movimiento están bastante bien hechas. Los efectos de sonido tampoco están tan mal y la banda sonora destaca bastante en uno que otro escenario. En fin, aquí les dejo otra película de James Cameron que puede que les interese.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de acción, romance y comedia.
