Truman

Truman is a 2015 film directed by Cesc Gay played by Ricardo Darín, Javier Cámara and Dolores Fonzi in the main roles.

Although it is a comedy, with light tones and without dramatizing too much, it rescues the best of human nature in two friends who meet after a long time in a difficult moment in their lives.

The goal is to show that friendship is stronger than everything.

Si bien es una comedia, con tonos ligeros y sin dramatizar demasiado, rescata lo mejor de la naturaleza humana en dos amigos que se encuentran después de mucho tiempo en un momento difícil de sus vidas.

El objetivo es demostrar que la amistad es más fuerte que todo.

The theme of diseases taken to the movies with a more or less melodramatic touch is not a novelty. Sometimes with a certain originality and quality. Sometimes with some cheesiness. And other times it has been lost in the ambiguity of the subject.

Truman's story is dramatic, but it speaks of that everyday drama, without low blows, which many of us have lived in first person.

Characters that we can find every day in the street, in our own home. Of those characters that do not make us shed so many tears but leave a bitter taste in our mouth. But that allow us to reconcile with others and with ourselves.

El tema de las enfermedades llevadas al cine con un toque más o menos melodramático no es una novedad. A veces con cierta originalidad y calidad. A veces con algo de cursilería. Y otras veces se ha perdido en la ambiguedad del tema.

La historia de Truman es dramática, pero habla de esa dramaticidad cotidiana, sin golpes bajos, la cuál muchos de nosotros ha vivido en primera persona.

Personajes que podemos encontrar todos los dias en la calle, en nuestro propio hogar. De esos personajes que no nos hacen derramar tantas lágrimas sino que nos dejan un sabor amargo en la boca. Pero que nos permite reconciliarnos con los demás y con nosotros mismos.

The interpreters are true archetypes separated by distance and feelings.

On the one hand we have Julian, a middle-aged man who has a terminal illness, specifically cancer.

On the other side we have Tomás, his best friend, who lives in Canada and has decided to travel to Spain in the hope of remembering old times in his last months of life and to spend four days with his friend as a farewell.

And who is Truman? The name of the film is a tribute to Julian's dog who has that name. Little by little he becomes the main protagonist.

Julian has to find him a new owner because he is already preparing everything for when the time comes for him to leave this world.

Even in those small details the film is dramatic without falling into low blows. His perfectionism even leads him to reject some of Truman's possible future owners because, according to his criteria, they do not meet the necessary requirements to care for the animal properly.

The crux of the film is a back and forth of contrasting feelings and emotions between the two friends and Truman.

With the time limit (the real suspense of the film): only four days to leave everything defined.

Even for Tomás, who must return to Canada. Four unique and last days that they must take advantage of to live them to the fullest.

Ricardo Darín as Julián and Javier Cámara as Tomás are extraordinary and humanly credible.

Their friendship is the one we would all desire at a crucial moment in our lives because it implies total acceptance of the other, including their flaws but also recognizing our own.

Los intérpretes son verdaderos arquetipos separados por la distancia y lo sentimientos.

Por un lado tenemos a Julián, un hombre de mediana edad que tiene una enfermedad terminal, concretamente un cáncer.

Por el otro lado tenemos a Tomás, su mejor amigo, que vive en Canadá y que ha decidido viajar a España con la esperanza de recordar viejos tiempos en sus últimos meses de vida y de pasar junto a su amigo cuatro días a modo de despedida.

Y Truman quien es? El nombre de la película es un homenaje al perro de Julián que tiene ese nombre. Que de a poco pasa a convertirse en el protagonista principal.

Julián tiene que encontrarle un nuevo dueño porque ya está predisponiendo todo para cuando llegue el momento de dejar este mundo.

Hasta en esos mínimos detalles la película es dramática sin caer en golpes bajos. Su perfeccionismo lo lleva incluso a rechazar algunos posibles futuros dueños de Truman porque según su criterio no reúnen los requisitos necesarios para ac udir al animal como se debe.

El meollo de la películo es un ir y venir de sentimientos e emociones contrastados en ambos amigos y Truman.

Con el límite del tiempo (la verdadera cuota de suspenso d ela película): solo cuatro días para dejar todo definido.

Incluso para Tomás que debe regresar a Canadá. Cuatro únicos y últimos días que deben aprovechar para vivirlos al máximo.

Ricardo Darín como Julián y Javier Cámara como Tomás son extraordinarios y humanamente creíbles. Su amistad es la que todos deseríamos en un momento crucial de nuestra vidas porque implica la aceptación total del otro, incluidos sus defectos pero reconociendo también los nuestros.

The film was very well received by international critics.

As a result, it was nominated for several awards and won some of them, including the Golden Shell at the San Sebastian Festival (winners Ricardo Darín and Javier Cámara); at the 30th Goya Awards it won Best Film, Best Direction (Cesc Gay), Best Leading Male Performance (Ricardo Darín), Best Supporting Male Performance (Javier Cámara) and Best Original Screenplay, among other awards.

La película fue recibida muy bien por la crítica especializada internacional.

Con motivo de ello fue nominada para varios premios y ganó algunos de ellos, entre los cuáles se pueden destacar la Concha de oro en en Festival de San Sebastián (ganadores Ricardo Darín y Javier Cámara); en la 30° Edición de los Premios Goya se llevó los galardones como Mejor Película, Mejor dirección (Cesc Gay), Mejor interpretación masculina protagonista (Ricardo Darin), Mejor interpretación masculina de reparto (Javier Cámara) y Mejor guion original entre otros premios.

We are not in the presence of a heartbreaking film, nor of a film that takes us to extreme situations. It is a simple story told in a simple way, and for that reason it is highly credible.

The main focus of the plot is not on death as something painful and irreparable, but on human relationships and the reaction to such adverse circumstances. The reaction to a problem to which they cannot find a solution, they cannot remedy it.

And how the simple things in life, such as finding an owner so that your dog is not abandoned, can become so important.

No estamos en presencia de una película desgarradora, ni d euna película que nos lleva a situaciones extremas. Es una historia simple contada en manera simple, y por ese motivo es sumamente creíble.

El objetivo principal de la trama no es la muerte como algo doloroso e irreparable, sino que está puesto en las relaciones humanas y a la reacción delante de circunstancias tan adversas. La reacción delante de un problema al cuúl no pueden encontrarle solución, no lo pueden remediar.

Y como las cosas simples de la vida como buscar un dueño para que tu perro no quede desamparado pueden llegar a ser algo tan importante.
