  1. Underwater - The Demon at the Bottom of the Ocean | Film Review [En-Es]@neruel924d

Something has struck the research center—something hidden at the bottom of the sea. The darkness weighs on everyone and dies little by little. They just want to escape, but the possibility recedes with every passing minute.

Underwater is a 2020 film that has just been added to the Netflix lineup and is trending. The dark plot of this production and its synopsis were what first caught my attention. It had been a long time since I had seen something where monsters set the tone for each of the scenes. In Venezuela's preferences, the film is in the top 8 of the most viewed films.

In general terms, the concept ends up grabbing you and being somewhat entertaining. Enough to carry you through to the end. I can't deny that all the elements end up generating a prediction of what will happen; even so, I can't say that it doesn't have something totally lacking. When I watch these kinds of productions, I don't expect much, but I know that they will have something to pass the time.

One thing that makes the film watchable is that the events happen very fast, so despite predicting what will happen, it doesn't get boring. Even the opening moment starts with the destruction of the navy fleet at the bottom of the sea.

I found it interesting that the plot takes place at the bottom of the ocean, precisely in a research laboratory. Currently, very little exploration has been done in the ocean, indeed, this year 2023 saw the implosion of the Titan. This has put the world under a great deal of controversy, and it is clear that there is little investment in a critical area of our planet. This film shows large laboratories at the bottom of the ocean and tells you that it will be possible at some point.

Science is advancing, but there is also the question of whether there is some creature there that we have not seen. This may be a delusional claim because it is impossible because the sun's rays do not reach the deepest part of the ocean, which does not allow photosynthesis to take place. Without photosynthesis, there is no release of oxygen. Well, organisms could mutate and find a way to live at the bottom of the ocean. This is hypothetical, and this is what the film shows in each of its scenes.

How big is the monster? The concept could be seen at first as that of the Kraken, Leviathan or Morgawr, however, I got the impression that the sea monster in this film resembles Cthulhu.

The plot centers on each of the characters searching for a way out of the marine research center after a sudden earthquake and the deaths of several researchers. All that's left is to suit up and walk into the depths of the ocean until they can reach an escape pod that will somehow or others get them to the surface of the earth. It's intriguing, isn't it?

Intrigante, ¿verdad?

The leading role was played by Kristen Stewart. In the story, she is Norah Price. One of the things that is visually impressive is that Kristen has completely shaved hair and a very rustic attitude. That makes her character potentially appealing, but not until the end.

I liked Jessica Henwick's character, Emily Haversham. This actress is too sexy, although her character is the typical person who does nothing but survive because of everyone's support.

One scene that left me in shock was that of the actor Mamoudou Athie as Rodrigo Nagenda. His death was horrible, you could see his eyes and brains. It was a very strong scene in the film, even the other characters in the plot were shocked. He didn't deserve to die that way. Horrible, without a doubt.

As for the film images, there is a very good adaptation, the scenes feel very realistic, and somehow or other, you imagine the pressure of the water in the middle of the darkness. What didn't I like? The middle of the film is very weak, I didn't like that everything is predictable, and the ending is very common. In my opinion, the plot could have been developed in a better way, but it is still a film that serves to entertain you and break the ice of what you are usually watching.

What really is the monster at the bottom of the ocean? Who will survive? What is the reason for the research center's existence? What are sea monsters? A story that doesn't go beyond what we've seen so far but maintains some degree of average entertainment. I'll read it to you in the comments.

¿Qué no me gusto?

    English Text

Greetings Hivers, happy weekend to all. It's getting very cold around here, December has arrived and with it the rainy season that has many of us a bit cold.

And speaking of rain, I want to share with you a recent movie I saw on Netflix, with the beautiful Kristen Stewart of which I had not heard or seen a trailer before, I didn't know this movie existed. It caught my attention since Netflix did an update of their listings and added this one in particular.
Underwater, the name as such reminded me of that saga of vampire and werewolf movies, mostly because of the term that precedes it in the title, I'm not used to hearing that "Under" in movies as such and it made me think that it was going to be a pretty interesting plot.
One of the things I confess is that I'm not a fan of plots that take place inside the sea, and one of the main reasons is that you lose a lot of vision of the environment, you can't be very detailed and therefore I tend to miss some important things.
However, I liked this movie a little bit and not exactly because of the main character, they kept me in that long suspense and they have mixed science and fiction in a way that made me feel a deja vu.

    English Text

These people in the depths of the sea, work as a kind of drills I guess to go discovering new things from the bowels of the earth, surely also to extract some kind of valuable minerals and many other important things.

They are very well built facilities, given that the pressure in that place must be something abysmal, the implosion that occurs by some fracture must be a matter of less than a second.
Particularly this is what makes me not a fan of the sea, I am one of those who love to be on land and avoids both the depth of the ocean and the limitless sky.
The fact that as the first scenario in the plot is a desperate race for survival, made everything from the beginning to the end for me was absolute suspense. For a moment I thought it was going to be a film proposal with a single role in it, shipwreck in the depths style, but then more characters are shown in this story.

    English Text

Within these facilities there is an integrated and specialized team in different fields, from mechanics to marine biologists. I don't remember the specific reason why these facilities were there, only that a company is drilling, even though there are several stations within the depths.

What is supposed to be said is that those facilities were supposed to be prepared for any contingency, mostly some earthquake or something like a natural phenomenon. It was never thought that they would suffer an external attack.
Desperation is one of the most evident characteristics in this plot, because a contingency on land I think is easier to handle than hundreds of kilometers deep where the chances of survival are very low, it is like an imminent way to die, guaranteed to use other words.
Having to walk several kilometers into the sea where the vision is almost null and there is something that is stalking them must be crazy, the concentration needed to be calm in such a situation must be total and the great responsibility of the group leader practically comes uphill.

    English Text

As for the threat, it must be assumed that they are marine creatures that were buried for thousands and thousands of years and have managed to get out of there thanks to the drills, species that were not even imagined to exist and that become a threat to the world.

The figure they have used of these species are somewhat similar to that of the Kaiju and Aliens. They are somewhat sensitive to noises and lights but deadly and intelligent enough to wipe out everyone within the depths.
So basically it is both an adventure and a survival task for this group as they search for survivors along the way, answers to everything that was going on and a nearby station with escape pods.

  3. Underwater (film): It's Aliens, but in the sea instead of space!@netflixr1829d

It was evident to me just by the trailer what was going to happen in this film. I don't think they really try to even hide that. The amount of theft that this film does by basically making Aliens and underwater feature is kind of embarrassing to be honest, and they paid for this in both critical review and by losing money at the box office. Of course it would be really easy to argue that at least part of this loss was due to Covid as well but I like to believe that the movie was shunned after it was exposed as being a near direct ripoff of Aliens.

    https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/horrormovies/images/2/21/Underwater2020.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20191224163927 src

I have a fear of deep water and I also enjoy a good jump scare sci-fi(ish) film even if the story is completely unoriginal. Therefore, I gave this big-budget film a whirl anyway and ok, it is reasonably entertaining and has some pretty fantastic special effects, plus the addition of T.J. Miller is always welcome in my book.

    [src](https://rogermooresmovienation.files.wordpress.com/2020/01/under2.jpeg?w=1400)

They don't spend a lot of time on setting up the plot as to why everyone is 7 miles under the sea and this is probably a good thing. I do enjoy how they were able to slowly reveal this to us over the normal events of the film because honestly, if they had spent a bunch of time on the lead in information I probably would have switched it off. In this regard, I like the way that director William Eubank decided to take the story in that within a couple minutes of the film starting, the tense atmosphere of being trapped underwater, FAR underwater, is established right away.

    [src](https://bookandfilmglobe.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/underwater.jpg)

Instead of spending half an hour on a backstory, instead we see Norah Price (Kristin Stewart) wake up and brush her teeth and 1.5 minutes later disaster strikes and continues to strike for the remaining hour and half. There is very little time in this film's roughly 90 minutes that was wasted and the "go go go" pace is kept up nearly the entire time. I do enjoy this but I still have to mark the movie down some points just because they basically lifted the entire premise from other films. The only thing they didn't do was discover a little kid that has been living in the ventilation system that has somehow managed to outsmart the baddies for a long period of time.

    [src](https://hellardmedia.files.wordpress.com/2020/04/o_rnd_comp_markettingstills_v2.1044.jpg?w=1440)

Filming in the underwater suits couldn't have been easy and I wouldn't actually mind seeing a behind the scenes about how they pulled this off. Obviously they weren't actually really far underwater for safety reasons but if they managed to pull this off without actually being in water at all I can't really understand how they would pull this off because the movements are very consistent with how one would move underwater - well, most of the scenes anyway, there is a certain one where a metal box that is filled with air once it gets detached from the cabling actually sinks downward rapidly and well, that is not how that would happen. Depending on what it was made of, it might have actually went UP.

The plot quickly turns into a "we accidentally unleashed a plague of monsters onto the planet" and this is when it becomes *Aliens" and it only becomes more so as the story unfolds. None of this really matters though because the movie is kept entertaining because there is very little downtime.

underwater-6-scaled.jpeg src At least this thing didn't wake up and latch onto someone's face

Before anyone accuses me of spoiling, basically all of what is said above is hinted at in the trailers and also the wording of the poster.

    Should I watch it?

I found it pretty entertaining but at the same time was irritated about the similarities between this film and legendary ones that came before such as of course Aliens and also Sphere. I get annoyed when Hollywood throws a bunch of money at a completely unoriginal idea and then expects us to all love it. This film ended up losing a bunch of money but I don't know if they even tried to engage the Asian audience with it, which seems to be what a lot of big budget action/thrillers with not much going on as far as the plot is concerned are designed for.

When the ending finally comes, it isn't a surprise but almost a "really?" moment. I don't think this is a great film and it certainly isn't an inventive one outside of some of the creative cinematography that was probably pretty darn difficult to pull off. Mostly, I think that people will enjoy this one, but just don't expect a great deal from the plot since you likely already know it after just seeing the trailer.

I would say to watch this if you are feeling kind of brain dead and incapable of following any sort of complicated plot (this one has none of that) or if you are drunk. This film is currently not available on Netflix and is unlikely to do so since the company that it was made by is owned by Disney. I am sure you can figure out how to get it otherwise though :P

  4. Underwater takes fear to whole new depths@daltono1910d

    FE23D561-A095-4205-B9C8-B5ADF0010EE3.jpeg

In the year 2050, a crew of oceanic researchers working for a deep sea drilling company try to get to safety after a mysterious earthquake devastates their deepwater research and drilling facility located at the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

    image.png Source

    Time to go deep

Set in the Mariana Trench which is nearly 7 miles or 11,034 meters/36,201 feet deep. This Lovecraftian film features wretched sea monsters that don't seem to like visitors. Five researchers fight for their life in a battle against a seemingly invisible foe.

    image.png Source

    Anxiety levels high

This film wastes no time jumping into action. Lead role Norah/Kristen Stewart is one of the researchers who this film follows. She is tasked with surviving a catastrophe within the first 10 minutes. There is no known cause to the chaos, but it starts to become clear that someone (or something) is behind the calamity.

    image.png Source

    Comedic relief

One of the researchers named Paul/T.J. Miller isn't afraid to lighten the mood. If it weren't for his frequent bursts of humor, this movie would become boring at times. It is instead a mixture of suspenseful action, chilling horror, sci-fi, and odd humor.

    image.png Source

    Monster design

As one may assume, there are deep sea-monsters lurking around the drilling rig. These creatures terrorize the researchers as they use astronaut-like suits to traverse the pitch black sea floor. If you are a fan of H.P. Lovecraft, then you will love the ode to one of his most famous monster creations.

    IMG_6041.jpg Source

    My review

I watched this with @flowerbaby on HBO Max the other night. We both were on edge pretty much the entire movie. I got some good laughs, but shortly after those can remember jumping from being scared to death. I found this film to be a fine blend of several of my favorite genres.

Probably my favorite part was how cool the sea monsters were. I was pleased that they actually showed the creatures up close multiple times. Plus the final boss was a total behemoth.

If you’re a fan of the sea, then you’ll enjoy this one a lot. Don’t be too concerned about the fact that this is set in the future, there aren’t many things that make that fact stand out. The only thing it might explain is how on earth the researchers are able to walk on the sea floor without dying. Their suits must have some sort of futuristic tech.

I would totally recommend that you watch this movie sometime. I personally am not a big fan of Kirsten Stewart, but she was actually pretty entertaining in this movie. The overall concept and mixture of cast makes Underwater feel worth the 95 minute run time.

  5. Underwater – Movie Review@readingdanvers2242d

    Underwater.jpg

This was a surprisingly entertaining thriller movie with a few touches of horror. Underwater is directed by William Eubank who isn't a familiar director and directed only two movie previously, one of them being a sci-fi thriller called The Signal. This movie as has some clear sci-fi elements in it, but it is clearly going the route of horror. This movie also has a lot of familiar faces in it, but not the kind that got people to go to the theaters to watch this movie. Which is too bad, because the ending of this movie is theater worthy, but I settled for watching it at home as well.

This movie doesn't waste time with setup or built up. I mean it has like 3 maybe 5 minutes tops of exposition and then the fun starts. It's a lot more fun than the not impressive trailers show. It doesn't slow down at any moment. It just keeps going. The only downside to this is that you don't really care about the characters, but are you very entertained.

The movie takes place inside a drilling facility called Kepler 822, which is located in Mariana Trench, the deepest oceanic trench in the world. When Kepler is struck by an Earthquake, those who survived the structural damage must find a way to get to the rescue pods and reach land. However, but the time our heroes recover from the shock, most of the pods are gone and they have to find a new way to reach the surface, before the structure collapses.

In the movie Kristen Stewart plays Norah Price, a mechanical engineer. It is an ensemble movie, but yeah, she's the lead character. I haven't seen a lot of Kristen Stewart movies, but this feels like the first time that I've seen her acting in a movie. She's still a bit neurotic, but her facial expressions are spot on. Also, she has facial expressions in this movie. Shocking, I know. Vincent Cassel plays W. Lucien, the captain of the Kepler and not a totally assholes, shockingly as well. T.J. Miller plays Paul Abel, the guy who tells a lot of jokes, but a pretty decent guy as well. Jessica Henwick (Colleen Wing from Iron Fist) plays Emily Haversham, a biologist who is really bad in stressful situations. There are three other survivors as well and the movie focuses on everyone's effort as a team to survive. But, like I said, Norah is the main character in all of this.

Unlike most horror movies, these guys are not idiots. I mean really these people are really smart and capable. There is no – don't do that moments in this movie. You know the kind that you have in every horror movie that makes you wonder at the stupidity of the characters. None of that here. Once in the movie I thought about a question and one of the characters actually asked that question a few moments later, because it is the logical thing to ask in their situation. These are guys are survivors. They are not here to make stupid mistakes.

They have one mission. To find working pods that will get them back to surface. They will look out of each on the way and make the right decision. However, things can get pretty interesting underwater as they are in unmarked and unexplored territory. They find that some mysterious creatures are hindering their progress. The monster design in excellent. We see them just enough to make it horrorish and not a monster movie.

Also the ending of the movie was like super fun. My mouth dropped open. I don't want to spoiler it, even though the movie is sprinkled with clues as to where this movie is going, but I was still shocked. It was so much fun.

If you are still stuck in quarantine and you are starting to run out of things to watch, you should totally give this movie a try. It is now available on Amazon Prime.
