Warm Bodies (film)

¡Hola amigos! Feliz mes de Halloween. Hoy les vengo con una recomendación no tan terrorífica porque estuve leyendo la publicación del concurso y vi mucha gente que dice que no le gustan las pelis o series de miedo, entonces vengo a romper con esa idea de que algo de Halloween debe dar miedo, cuando no es el caso. Como consumidora del género desde pequeña (ah, los traumas y pesadillas que me lleve también) entiendo que hay personas a las que no les guste o le genere rechazo por este motivo. Es por eso que hoy les quiero hablar de una película horriblemente ¿romántica?: Mi novio es un zombie o Warm Bodies en inglés.

Hello friends! Happy Halloween month. Today I come with a not so scary recommendation because I was reading the publication of the contest and I saw many people who say they don't like scary movies or series, so I come to break with that idea that something from Halloween must be scary, when it is not the case. As a consumer of the genre since I was a child (ah, the traumas and nightmares I had too) I understand that there are people who don't like it or it generates rejection for this reason. That's why today I want to talk about a horribly romantic movie: My Boyfriend is a Zombie or Warm Bodies in English.

¿Quién no habrá dicho esa frase alguna vez? Ah no, paren, es que acá estamos hablando en serio. El novio de la protagonista es en realidad un zombie, está muertísimo, pero parece que no tanto. Aunque tampoco es que sea su novio de verdad. De hecho ella ya lo conoce siendo un zombie y encima se comió a su verdadero novio.

Who hasn't said that phrase at some time? Ah no, stop, we are serious here. The main character's boyfriend is actually a zombie, he's dead, but it seems that he's not that dead. Although he's not her real boyfriend either. In fact, she already knows him as a zombie and on top of that he ate her real boyfriend.

Como toda película apocalíptica de zombies, están estás criaturas que buscan alimentarse de los vivos y están los humanos que buscan refugiarse, agruparse, sobrevivir y tratar de desterrar este mal de la tierra.  ¿Pero qué pasa sí te cruzas con un zombie que piensa y todavía tiene la capacidad de sentir? Seguro sería una pesadilla, un ser terrorífico superdesarrollado; pero y si esta criatura no fuera mala por ello y se sintiera mal por querer comerse a un ser humano, entonces evita hacerlo aunque se esté muriendo de hambre. Y, lo más sorprendente aún, ¿qué pasa sí se enamora de una humana? Ya sé, suena muy espeluznante. Esto es Halloween, no podemos hacer nada al respecto. Pero les aseguro que les encantará R.

Like any apocalyptic zombie movie, there are these creatures that seek to feed on the living and there are the humans who seek shelter, band together, survive and try to banish this evil from the earth.  But what if you come across a zombie that thinks and still has the ability to feel? Surely it would be a nightmare, an overdeveloped terrifying being; but what if this creature was not evil for it and felt bad for wanting to eat a human being, then it avoids doing so even if it is starving. And, even more surprisingly, what if it falls in love with a human? I know, it sounds really creepy. This is Halloween, there's nothing we can do about it. But I assure you, you'll love R.

R no es un zombie común, "vive" con otros zombies en una especie de aeropuerto, hasta que un día se come a un soldado y empieza a absorber sus recuerdos. Él siempre se sintió diferente, sabe que está muerto y todo el rollo, pero ahora es distinto porque empieza a sentir cosas por la novia de este soldado y la salva de ser comida por los otros zombies. 

R is not a common zombie, he "lives" with other zombies in a kind of airport, until one day he eats a soldier and begins to absorb his memories. He always felt different, he knows he's dead and all, but now it's different because he starts to feel things for this soldier's girlfriend and saves her from being eaten by the other zombies.

Julie al principio tiene terror de R, pero se da cuenta que es un zombie diferente que realmente la quiere ayudar a llegar a su refugio con los otros humanos. En su camino se va a tener que hacer pasar por un ser humano y eso, amigos, es cosa de locos porque se está pudriendo en un sentido muy literal. Encima, como si no fuera poco, logra meter a R dentro de la comunidad. Imagínense un zombie dentro de un lugar lleno de humanos, uh sí. 

Julie is terrified of R at first, but realizes that she's a different zombie who really wants to help her get to her safe house with the other humans. On her way she's going to have to pretend to be a human being and that, my friends, is crazy stuff because she's rotting in a very literal sense. On top of that, as if that wasn't enough, he manages to get R inside the community. Imagine a zombie inside a place full of humans, uh yeah.

Todo esto es hilarante, lo sé, es más una película de risa que de miedo. Aunque sí hay partes algo asquerosas de ver. No se puede escapar de eso por la temática de la película. De verdad que es increíble de ver. Acá se superaron.  Piensen que la película salió en el furor después de Crepúsculo, y si una humana se puede enamorar de un vampiro por qué no de un zombie. Aunque acá es al revés. Vemos toda la película desde la perspectiva de R. Eso la hace más interesante aún, siempre quise saber cómo se sentía ser un no-muerto (? 

The whole thing is hilarious, I know, it's more of a laugh out loud movie than a scary movie. Although yes there are somewhat gross parts to watch. You can't escape that because of the subject matter of the movie. It really is amazing to watch. They really outdid themselves here.  Think that the movie came out in the rage after Twilight, and if a human can fall in love with a vampire why not with a zombie. Here, though, it's the other way around. We see the whole movie from the perspective of R. That makes it even more interesting, I always wanted to know how it felt like to be undead (?

También es curioso lo mucho que la actriz que hace de Julie (Teresa Palmer) se parece a Kristen Stewart (protagonista de Crepúsculo) en ese entonces. No es que sean muy parecidas, pero tienen un aire. Aunque el que se roba toda la película es Nicholas Hoult, nuestro R, todo se centra en él y tiene que hacer su papel de muerto no tan muerto. Pienso que lo hizo bastante bien. Aunque es difícil saber cómo actuar de zombie siendo que esto varía mucho de una producción a otra. Ya saben, cada serie o película sobre estos seres tiene su estilo y su manera de hacerlos comportarse. Pero en líneas generales me pareció que lo hizo muy bien. Aparte tuvo que ponerle humor y todo. 

It's also funny how much the actress who plays Julie (Teresa Palmer) looks like Kristen Stewart (star of Twilight) back then. Not that they are very similar, but they have an air. Although the one who steals the whole movie is Nicholas Hoult, our R, everything is centered around him and he has to play his role as the not-so-dead dead guy. I thought he did pretty well. Although it's hard to know how to act a zombie being that it varies a lot from production to production. You know, every series or movie about these beings has its own style and way of making them behave. But in general terms I thought he did it very well. Besides, he had to add humor and everything.

Es una película poco común, pero también es bastante cliché, sobre todo al final. Aunque debo decir que si bien me pareció bastante ridículo, por algún motivo me conmovió. Así que estaba pensando "¿Dios, qué es este final? No lo puedo creer" -indignada- y al mismo tiempo "ooh, es muy lindo todo" -lágrima-. Manejaba esos dos moods. De nuevo el poder del amor haciendo su aparición.

It's an unusual film, but it's also quite cliché, especially at the end. Although I have to say that while I thought it was pretty ridiculous, for some reason I was moved by it. So I was thinking "God, what is this ending? I can't believe it" -indignant- and at the same time "ooh, it's all so cute" -tears-. I managed those two moods. Again the power of love making its appearance.

Pero no todo es color de rosas, porque hay unos esqueletos (estos sí están muy muertos y no tienen salvación), que se van a querer vengar de los zombies que están empezando a razonar y sentir como R e intentaran comerse a los humanos de la comunidad de Julie. Ahí va a tener su parte de acción. ¿Esqueletos contra zombies y humanos? sí, venga esa droga.

But not everything is rosy, because there are some skeletons (these are very dead and have no salvation), who are going to want to take revenge on the zombies who are beginning to reason and feel like R and will try to eat the humans of the julie's community There you will have your share of action. Skeletons against zombies and humans? yes, come on that drug.

Además tenemos otra cosa interesante y es que él se hace llamar R y ella Julie. Haciendo alusión a Romeo y Julieta, un amor prohibido. ¿Tendrán el mismo final? Para saberlo tienen que verla. Es una opción diferente pero es válida para disfrutar en estas fechas. Ya saben, si quieren darle una oportunidad luego me cuentan y si ya la vieron me gustaría que me cuenten su opinión al respecto. We also have another interesting thing and that is that he calls himself R and she calls herself Julie. Will they have the same ending?
