   Complex and complicated emotionally traumatising horror. Two seasons tell complete story in a very strange way. Without any explanation, first season shows several versions of the story that begins at the exact same date in June 1983, each time focusing on different character. Through that viewers learn background of the story where it is a 5th year since "dam war" when villages saved their village from dam construction project through all sorts of methods including sabotage and even kidnapping son of Japan's minister for development. (Surprisingly realistic scenario since in reality, there have never been a case when petitioners were able to scrape national project without non-violent resistance anywhere in the world). Every year after dam war, on the day of summer festival, one villager dies and another goes missing. ("Some people half-jokingly call them the 'successive Hinamizawa mystery murder incidents'.") A curse is suspected, and two sacrifices presumed to be a price of saving the village. Story develops around group of children in school and viewers slowly learn that despite innocent appearance, every child is somehow involved with village situation. Each variation of the story gives different tragic ending that is intensely psychopathic, with a different person caring for someone so much that (s)he succumbs to madness and murders someone. (I wish I knew that before I started watching the show as it would help me to understand it better and avoid confusion.) Then, in the second season, there comes a really creepy and powerful moment (that is easy to miss) when viewers realise that characters have residual memories of different versions of events, and one character who did not kill anyone in this version of events is having dreams of murdering someone (that she knows she did not do) so she returns to the crime scene from her dreams, being influenced by alternate versions of events. Viewers then learn about non-supernatural cause for madness but supernatural is introduced anyway, to stage the scene for the final struggle to break terrible fate that seems to be inevitable, and to finally explain why there were different versions of events. Strangely enough, it is a story of friendship and struggle against fate.

   Complex and engaging setup of the story, as well as unique storytelling, makes the show watchable despite hyperbolically dark, gory and psychopathic drama. However, due to overwhelmingly dark story it is hard to recommend the show. Also story features vaccination propaganda, of course, in both seasons... :-(

With a total of 50 episodes (adding its second season, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai), this anime has everything that any fan of the psychological horror genre is looking for, with characters, stories and scenarios that are simply unforgettable.    Plot

   The anime takes us to the 80s, precisely to the year 1983, in a small rural town or village called Hinamizawa, a quiet place, but at the same time mysterious, like its inhabitants.    Before I start, I want to make it clear that this review focuses only on the first and second seasons of the anime (specifically Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai), which were produced by Studio DEEN and aired between 2006-2007. I'm not going to talk anything about its most recent seasons aired in the year 2020-2021 (that's right, I'm talking about Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gou and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Sotsu which for those who didn't know, are sequels, not a remake), sequels that were produced by Passione studio. With this in mind, let's continue with the review.

   Talking about this anime is not easy, just as it is not easy to follow it as closely as very few have managed to do. It is not just any anime with just any story, since its style or way of telling a story is very different from what most do, which gives it that psychological touch that not everyone likes to see in an animated series of this style. But, I am completely sure about something and it is the way this work has of trapping the viewer completely, playing a lot with the mind of each one, making us see things that appear to be something innocent, funny and tender, but that in the end ends up degenerating into a complete nightmare. Yes, it sounds like some kind of joke, but as you could clearly see in the trailer, this anime perfectly mixes horror with gore and suspense in a bizarre, bloody and surreal way. The type of horror we see in this series is not the same as what we have already talked about in previous reviews, as it seems not to be involved in anything supernatural (at least that's what this particular series appears to be), but it is a darker type of horror, more realistic, you could even say. The absurd amount of deaths, murders, supposed accidents and multiple attacks give us away that the cruelty and evil of the human being himself is the real terror we see in this story.

   Antes de empezar, quiero dejar bien en claro que esta reseña se centra únicamente en la primera y segunda temporada del anime (específicamente Higurashi no Naku Koro ni y Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai), el cual fue producido por Studio DEEN y que fueron emitidos entre los años 2006-2007.    Hablar de este anime no es fácil, lo mismo que no lo es seguirla de cerca tanto como muy pocos han logrado. No es un anime cualquiera con una historia cualquiera, ya que su estilo o forma de contar una historia es muy diferente a lo que la mayoría hace, lo cual le da como garantía ese toque psicológico que no a todos les fascina ver en una serie animada de este estilo. Pero, de algo sí estoy completamente seguro y es en la manera que tiene esta obra de atrapar al espectador por completo, jugando bastante con la mente de cada uno, haciéndonos ver cosas que aparentan ser algo inocente, gracioso y tierno, pero que al final se termina degenerando en una completa pesadilla. Si, suena a una especie de broma, pero como pudieron ver claramente en el trailer, este anime mezcla de manera perfecta el terror con el gore y el suspenso de una forma bizarra, sangrienta y surrealista. El tipo de horror que vemos en esta serie no es igual a lo que ya hemos hablado en reseñas anteriores, ya que parece no estar envuelto en nada sobrenatural (al menos eso aparenta esta serie en particular), sino que es un tipo de horror más oscuro, más realista, se podría decir incluso.    The characters we meet from the beginning are: Maebara Keiichi, Ryuugu Rena, Sonozaki Mion, Furude Rika and Houjou Satoko. This group of five young people seem to be the most normal in the world, at least from the beginning, with a quiet school life in a seemingly quiet town. Everything is normal, until the Watanagashi festival arrives. This celebration already brings in itself a very curious ritual, which they perform to worship the God Oyashiro-sama, a kind of divine being that protects the village. However, the quiet life of our protagonist ends when he learns of the cases of murder and death related to both the festival and her four friends. If it is already strange the amount of similarities that all the cases have, it seems no coincidence that they are all related to the girls or at least to their relatives. Throughout the anime we gradually get to know each of them, their problems, their families and their ways of life. Each time we get deeper and deeper into this spiral of horror, we come across a level of evil and hatred so irrational, so inhuman that it is unparalleled. Again, I quite admire the way this anime develops each of its characters in a "special" way. The details we see both in each situation and in the events that happen before and after the festival are things that at the end leave you with your head full of questions, this after seeing a completely unexpected plot twist.

   As I mentioned before, this anime doesn't tell a normal story, it tells a story with different endings, that's right. It is the particularity of telling us the same story over and over again, but with different events or happenings that end in something that do not make them part of the same one, if I make myself clear. To be more specific, but without going into too much detail or giving any spoilers, this story is divided into several arcs, several versions of the same story, which always ends in a different way. Do not expect to see the same story repeated exactly the same, but I do recommend you pay attention to the details that each one has. And this is another of the points in favor I give to this anime: the way they detail a story, with information, events and theories that make anyone start to have their doubts and want to know more and more of what is happening, capturing the viewer psychologically. The different plot twists, the evolution and deformation of each of the characters, the different endings that we know and the amount of explicit, grotesque, bloody, cruel and surreal scenes that this anime has makes it a complete festival of horror and psychological suspense, unique in its style. It is not like most anime of this genre that only focus on causing visual terror, but this time they also comply with generating a psychological terror that will not let you sleep at night.

   Los personajes que conocemos desde el principio son: Maebara Keiichi, Ryuugu Rena, Sonozaki Mion, Furude Rika y Houjou Satoko. Este grupo de cinco jóvenes parecen ser de lo más normal del mundo, al menos desde el principio, con una vida escolar tranquila en un pueblo aparentemente tranquilo.    Como mencioné antes, este anime no cuenta una historia normal, sino que cuenta una historia con diferentes finales, así es. Es la particularidad de contarnos la misma historia una y otra vez, pero con sucesos o acontecimientos diferentes que terminan en algo que no los hacen ser parte de una misma, si es que me doy a entender. Para ser más específicos, pero sin entrar tanto a detalles ni dar ningún Spoiler, esta historia está dividida por varios arcos, varias versiones de la misma, la cual siempre termina de manera diferente. No esperes ver una misma historia repetirse exactamente igual, pero sí te recomiendo poner atención a los detalles que tienen cada una. Y es que este es otro de los puntos a favor que le doy a este anime: la manera en la que detallan una historia, con información, sucesos y teorías que hacen que cualquiera empiece a tener sus dudas y querer saber más y más de lo que está sucediendo, capturando de manera psicológica al espectador. Los diferentes giros de guión, la evolución y deformación de cada uno de los personajes, los diferentes finales que conocemos y la cantidad de escenas explícitas, grotescas, sangrientas, crueles y surrealistas que tiene este anime la hace un completo festival del horror y suspenso psicológico, único en su estilo. No es como la mayoría de animes de este género que solo se centran en causar terror visual, sino también que cumplen esta vez con generar un terror psicológico que no te dejará dormir por las noches.

   Let's talk now about the technical side, being Studio DEEN once again the host of another of its great successes. Although in terms of animation it is not the best we can find today, there is no denying the quality of details and the excellent work of character design that this anime has (said by my dear girlfriend: unlike the work of Passione with its 2020 sequel, this style that the characters have is much more defined and much less bright and childish). The details in terms of expressions, the different landscapes and shots, the death and killing scenes is one of those works that you appreciate quite a lot, especially for conveying very well the feelings that one normally expresses in those situations. Not to mention the amazing job they did with both the voices of the characters and the sound effects, especially for the distinctive detail of the constant sound of the cicadas (which as the translation of the name indicates very well: "When Cigars Cry/Sing/Sing/Sound"). This, added to the screams, Machiavellian laughter, the sounds of stabbing, cutting, hammering and so on are those sound effects that make you live almost realistically every bizarre moment that this anime has. The soundtrack, of course, conveys very well that feeling of uneasiness, mystery, nostalgia, sadness and tension that this anime has, with a music that is practically unforgettable. In the end, we are talking about one of the best masterpieces that can be found in the world of horror anime, without exception.

   Personally, I give it a well-deserved rating of 10/10 as far as the horror genre, psychological suspense and mystery are concerned.

   Hablemos ahora del lado técnico, siendo el Studio DEEN una vez más el anfitrión de otro de sus grandes éxitos. Si bien en cuanto a animación no es lo mejor que podemos encontrar al día de hoy, no hay que negar la calidad de detalles y el excelente trabajo de diseño de personajes que tiene este anime (dicho por mi querida novia: a diferencia del trabajo de Passione con su secuela del 2020, este estilo que tienen los personajes es mucho más definido y mucho menos luminoso e infantil). Los detalles en cuanto a las expresiones, los distintos paisajes y planos, las escenas de muertes y matanzas es de esos trabajos que agradeces bastante, sobre todo por transmitir muy bien los sentimientos que normalmente uno expresa en esas situaciones. Eso sin mencionar el asombroso trabajo que hicieron tanto con las voces de los personajes como con los efectos de sonido, sobre todo por el distintivo detalle del sonido constante de las cigarras (que como en su traducción el nombre lo indica muy bien: “Cuando las Cigarras Lloran/Cantan/Suenan”). Esto, sumado a los gritos, las risas maquiavélicas, los sonidos de apuñalamientos, cortes, martillazos y demás son de esos efectos de sonido que te hacen vivir de manera casi realista cada momento bizarro que tiene este anime. La banda sonora, cómo no, transmite muy bien esa sensación de inquietud, misterio, nostalgia, tristeza y tensión que tiene este anime, con una música que es prácticamente inolvidable. Al final, hablamos de una de las mejores obras maestras que se pueden encontrar en el mundo del anime de terror, sin excepción.

   Personalmente, le doy una merecida calificación de 10/10 en lo que respecta al género de terror, el suspenso psicológico y el misterio.

   The depths of madness covered in infantilism

   You've waited a long time for my next review and today I come with a series that I've been hesitant to watch for over 14 years, but the appearance on Netflix intrigued me. At first many episodes of the series will throw you off with their infatuation and typical "funny" narration of the characters, but if you get through somehow you get a strong thriller that I consider to be one of the best. It's hard for me to say why the creators went to such extremes in creating When They Cry. I know it's based on a game series, but the infantile nature and strong comedy can make it hard for the viewer to get into the story, and the story is the most interesting point here. I don't review many anime, but I try to find feature films rather than something that is cartoonish, but when I started I had to finish. There are two conclusions: this is one of the best and worst anime I have ever seen The best, because like no other anime it can make the viewer's head spin, taking a long time before the whole story forms a plot line.

   The worst because of idiocies and forcefully thrown in "funny" threads that make me feel embarrassed watching another idiotic antics of characters like "the girl from the pore". The series tells the story of a small village of Hinamizawa, where people live peacefully, but in the past fought to prevent the construction of any dams (cutting off water to nearby crops). The conflict of the village with the locals was so great that every year people began to disappear. At first the town tried hard to create a dam there, but later they gave up. The village slowly started to recover and became even more hospitable. A young boy Keiichi Maebara arrives in the village and will attend a special school where there is no age division. There he will meet some girls who will befriend him and join a club where he will have a good time.

   Each of the girls has some sort of dark past. The series gives you a little bit of everything so that the viewer can wade through the idiocies and like a persistent detective unravel the mystery of the Onishiru Deity (if I spelled it wrong, forgive me) the village believes that once a year the deity kills one person who was somehow connected to the construction of the dam. Everything gets complicated when a young boy suddenly disappears and the only person he can find is mentally ill. The series is very interesting, it manages to show the belief of the people and how strongly they create a myth around themselves even putting themselves on par with god in the name of principles. The series consists of chapters, each assigned to a particular character, only the last ones are the development and arrangement of what really happened and why the macabre in the small town had to happen. The Netflix version is slightly censored if I think correctly, but it's literally a few frames with more violent scenes so the viewer can focus more on the mystery than watching the dismemberments. If you get past some of the humorous idiocies you get one of the most interestingly written stories. The series is like Silent Hill in that we as viewers are trapped in a time loop until a solution is found. In other words, every few episodes when a chapter ends (usually violently) we get all the characters back and the story from a different perspective.

   This thing is repeated several times so that we, as viewers, can see how it all happened, no one is good here, everyone has something on their conscience and the town feeds on the schizophrenia of the characters. In retrospect, I think this might have been the craziest anime that came out at the time, although the storyline here is all nicely done (without the humorous threads) The creators play with the viewers by giving them infantility like in anime about schools (I don't know how to call this genre) to make them grow up in a moment and even bombarding the viewer with cruelty, but in such a way that the viewer could get used to it. I haven't seen the movie yet, but now that I've finished the anime I'll probably watch it and write about it in a bit. I have a hard time rating it 9/10 without comedy 4/10 with comedy 7/10 as a whole :)

   Długo czekaliście na moja kolejna recenzje i dziś przychodzę z serialem, który wahałem się obejrzeć od przeszło 14 lat, jednak pojawienie się na Netflix zaintrygowało mnie. Początkowo wiele odcinków serialu odrzuci was swoją infatylnoscia i typowa „śmieszna” narracja bohaterów, jednak jeśli jakoś przebrniemy dostajemy mocny thriller, który uważam, za jeden z najlepszych. Ciężko mi stwierdzić, czemu twórcy tworząc When they Cry tak skrajnie tworzyli. Wiem ze opiera się o serie gier, ale infantylność i mocna komediowa otoczka potrafi powodować, ze widz nie może wczuć sie w historie, a historia jest tutaj najciekawszym punktem. Mało anime recenzuje, jednak staram sie znajdować bardziej filmy fabularne, niż coś co jest rysunkowe, ale jak zacząłem to musiałem skończyć. Wnioski są dwa to jedno z najlepszych i najgorszych anime jakie widziałem Najlepsze, bo jak żadne inne potrafi widzowi zrobić mętlik w głowie zajmującym dużo czasu nim cała opowieść sobie ułoży w głowie tworząc linie fabularna.

   Najgorsza przez idiotyzmy i na sile wrzucane wątki ”śmieszne” które powoduja, ze czuje zażenowanie oglądając kolejne idiotyczne wygłupy bohaterow w stylu „dziewczyna z pora” Serial opowiada o małej wiosce Hinamizawie, gdzie ludzie żyją sobie spokojnie, jednak w przeszłości walczyli by nie powstawała żadna tama ( odcinająca wodę do pobliskich upraw) Konflikt wioski z miejscowymi był na tyle duży, ze co roku zaczęły znikać osoby. O ile początkowo miasto usilnie starało sie stworzyć tam tamę, tak później zrezygnowali. Wioska powoli zaczęła odzywać i nawet bardziej stała sie gościnną. Do wioski przyjeżdża młody chłopak Keiichi Maebara, który będzie uczęszczał do specyficznej szkoły, gdzie nie ma podziałów na wiek. Tam tez pozna kilka dziewczyn, które zaprzyjaźnią się z nim i wstąpi do klubu, gdzie będzie miło spędzał czas.

   Każda z dziewczyn ma jakaś mroczna przeszłość. Serial szczątkowo podaje wszystko by widz przebrnął przez idiotyzmy i mógł niczym wytrwałbym detektyw rozwikłać zagadkę Bóstwa Onishiru( jeśli złe napisałem to wybaczcie) wioska wierzy, ze raz do roku bóstwo zabija jedna osobę, która jakoś była związana z budowa tamy. Wszystko wie komplikuje, kiedy młody chłopak nagle znika, a jedyna osoba która może znaleźć jest chora psychicznie. Serial jest bardzo ciekawy, potrafi ukazać wierzenie ludu i to jak mocno tworzą mit wokół siebie wręcz stawiając się na równi z bogiem w imię zasad. Serial składa się z rozdziałów, kazdy przypisany jest danej postaci, jedynie ostatnie są rozwinięciem oraz ułożeniem co tak naprawdę się stało i dlaczego musiało dojść do makabry w małym miasteczku. Wersja Netflix jeśli dobrze myśle jest lekko ocenzurowana, ale to dosłownie kilka kadrów z bardziej brutalnymi scenami by widz mógł bardziej skupić się na zagadce niż oglądać rozczłonkowania. Jeśli przebrnięcie kilka idiotyzmów humorystycznych to dostaniecie jedna z najciekawiej napisanych historii. Serial to takie Silent Hill, gdyż my jako widzowie jesteśmy uwięzieni w pętli czasu poki nie znajdziemy rozwiązania. Innymi słowy co kilka odcinków kiedy konczy się dany rozdział (zazwyczaj brutalnie) dostajemy wszystkich bohaterow z powrotem i historie z innej perspektywy.

   Rzecz ta powtarza się kilka razy by my jako widzowie mogliśmy zobaczyć jak do tego wszystkiego doszło, nikt tutaj nie jest dobry, każdy ma coś na sumieniu, a miasteczku żywi się schizofrenia bohaterow. Z perspektywy czasu uważam, ze to mogło być w tamtym czasie najbardziej szalone anime jakie wyszło choć fabularnie wszystko tutaj ładnie podane ( bez wątków humorystycznych) Twórcy bawią się widzem podając im infantylność niczym z anime opowiadające o szkołach ( nie wiem jak się nazywa ten gatunek) by za chwile dorosnąć i wręcz bombardując widza okrucieństwem, ale w taki sposób by mógł widz się z tym oswoić Filmu jeszcze nie widziałem, ale teraz kiedy zakończyłem anime to pewnie obejrzę i za jakiś czas napisze o nim. Ciężki mam problem z ocena 9/10 bez wątków komediowych 4/10 z watkami komediowymi 7/10 jako całość :)
