The reviews I write are of films I watched quite a while ago; as I have a long list, I start with the oldest ones and, sometimes, I forget what they’re about, but when a film is good or makes an impression on me, just seeing a few stills from the scenes is enough for me to remember the story. That’s what happened to me with ‘Who Am I?’, a German thriller about hackers from 2014 – quite an old one. 😆

It’s the story of Benjamin, a young computer genius – solitary and shy – who meets another hacker who is outgoing, funny and charismatic; they become friends and start getting up to all sorts of mischief using their skills and their group, seeking to attract attention with cyber pranks, hacking media organisations and large companies, until they become a viral sensation.

They get into trouble when they break into a public body and exchange information with another group of hackers – the bad guys; the catch is that Benjamin was actually on the side of the good guys.

The whole film is narrated through Benjamin’s perspective, as he is in custody and being interrogated, but he’s cunning and pretends to be the victim when, in reality, he’s the mastermind behind it all.

Throughout the film, there’s a distinct thriller atmosphere, with mounting suspense and scenes depicting what a cybercrime might look like; it’s a fast-paced story that, at times, leaves you pondering what you’ve just seen and makes you lose track of what’s happening; I had to pause and rewind several scenes – some because I didn’t understand what was happening, and others because I liked what I was seeing so much that I wanted to watch it again.

This film is for lovers of technology, crimes committed by rebel groups, and fans of suspense; it has received good reviews, so if you come across it, give it a go.
