Over the past three years, we've had quite a hard time with the Christmas tree during the holidays because my cat always wanted to touch it and climb on it, so I started using a box to protect the tree every year. I’d put the box around it before going to bed to keep him from destroying the Christmas tree at night. It was pretty stressful, and it looked really ugly—it took all the glamour out of my little tree, haha. This year, I decided to do things differently; I refused to use that horrible box.
So ever since I started putting up my little tree, I decided I wouldn't protect it anymore, and that if I knocked it over, I'd just pick it up and set it right again—until one day it got tired of it and simply got used to the fact that it's just another object in the house.
To my surprise, Tommy has only gone near the little tree once since I put it up; after that, he stopped, and for the past three days, the little tree has survived and remains intact. I'm quite surprised to see that he's no longer interested in touching it, because even when I was putting it up, some ornaments fell, and he came running to play with them.
Well, let's hope it stays this way… I love seeing my little tree lit up all day long without any cardboard boxes around it—they just made it look bad. I think cats eventually get bored with things and just don't care anymore after a while.
