Mercado Moreno: The Fascinating Transformation of a Gym into a Culinary Hub
Mercado Moreno is one of those spaces that has changed its function almost overnight. There are places that used to be one thing… and suddenly become something completely different. There are places that always end up failing, changing owners, names, or purposes. Well, this space is a clear example of that.
Initially, it was known as the Círculo Médico: a complex that offered gym classes on one side—complete with a huge swimming pool—and, on the other, had a cafeteria where people gathered to eat and have a drink. It was an exclusive service for doctors, a sort of private club or sports center.

Over time, it ceased to be exclusively for healthcare professionals. First, it opened its doors to the general public, and after a period of limited success, it eventually closed down entirely in its original format. It was transformed into a traditional gym: the spaces where classes had once been held were filled with exercise equipment, the pool was set up for swimming lessons, and the doors were opened to the entire community.
That phase enjoyed some success for a while, but eventually the membership fees began to rise, and some instructors decided to open their own studios, leaving the place behind. The thing is, I gradually forgot about that place; I stopped going little by little, started doing yoga and other activities… and simply lost track of it.
The Reunion and the Discovery of a New Concept
When I returned to Argentina in late 2025, I met up with a friend, and at one point she said to me, “Do you remember where the Círculo Médico used to be? Well, now they’ve turned it into a market… and it’s spectacular*.” Of course, we went to check it out.
I was really struck by this new venture, which is now called Mercado Moreno—since it’s located on Perito Moreno Street—and honestly, it turned out beautifully. They removed the pool area and built a café there next to a small supermarket. We speculated that they probably didn’t just cover the pool with concrete, but instead built a mezzanine level using the existing warehouse structure in that area.
In the area where the gym itself used to be, there’s now a brewery called Lúpulo, while another café has been set up where the old snack bar used to be. Meanwhile, on the upper floor—where I remember the exercise equipment and the basketball court being when I was a kid—they’ve set up several new attractions.
In the weight training area, they’ve set up a space for events—it seemed like one was just ending or the next one was about to start—while in the space where the basketball court used to be, they’ve designed a food court with very small stalls.
Flavors of the World, Creativity, and the Magic of Rebirth
Downstairs are the larger restaurants and cafes, which offer seating inside the establishment. Upstairs, however, the setup consists of individual food stalls: there’s a Venezuelan spot selling tequeños—which my friend wanted to try, though she ultimately decided against it—an ice cream shop, and a Chinese food stall, among other vendors representing various culinary categories and countries. Everything is arranged around a shared food court with communal tables and chairs.
Since we arrived around 5:00 p.m., there was hardly anyone there, so we sat down to have a drink in complete peace. We tried a super refreshing drink called agua de sandía, which had watermelon, cucumber, and mint; it was delicious. My friend also ordered a croissant with ham, cheese, avocado, and a fried egg. I was really full because I’d had lunch with my parents, so I just had the drink.
Here are a few pictures of the Moreno Market because it really is so beautiful. I found it to be a super picturesque place, and I think they’ve been incredibly creative in transforming what was practically a gym into such a well-rounded food market: from cafés and independent eateries to a food court and an event space.
I firmly believe that when creativity is applied effectively, it can work wonders. This place is a great example of that: a space that seemed doomed to oblivion, repurposed with intelligence, good taste, and a lot of imagination. It’s a spot that combines history, renewal, and flavors from different parts of the world, with that special charm of something reborn and transformed into something completely different and vibrant.
