Menorca’s Street Markets: A Journey Back in Time Through Its Traditional Festivals
In this post for the Black & White community in the #monomad challenge, I’m sharing a little bit about Menorca’s street markets and what goes on on this Balearic Island.
It’s such a special place, with such unique customs and such well-preserved authenticity, that I truly felt like I was in another era of history. In Menorca, starting on the night of San Juan, these festivities begin in the various towns.

Horsemen, Tradition, and Pomada
These festivals are known as Menorca’s “mercadillos.” They feature equestrian activities with horsemen—I’m not a big fan because I don’t really enjoy seeing animals used for entertainment, but well, it’s a somewhat strange custom for this point in history that’s still practiced today. The riders ride their horses through different streets, squares, and past houses, frequently making the animals neigh.
Afterward, there’s a celebration where people eat and drink something called “pomada”: a local cocktail made with Menorcan gin and lemonade, sweetened with sugar and usually served as a slush. It’s very, very tasty, so everyone in Menorca is used to drinking quite a bit of it. The thing is, it really packs a punch. So, of course, those weekend parties turn into times when people lose control.
It’s actually pretty funny, because it’s a very small, conservative, and laid-back island—in fact, it’s a Biosphere Reserve, so it has a completely different pace of life. It’s really interesting to see people looking forward to these festivals. At least as far as the cities I’ve visited in Spain are concerned, this is such a traditional thing… They’re street markets where you don’t get a sense of modernity, technology, or the latest trends—quite the opposite: it’s like traveling back in time.
It’s deeply fascinating. That’s why I’m sharing my tour of the street markets in Es Migjorn, Es Mercadal, and Alaior with you here.

The Soft Light of Menorca’s Villages
You may notice that some of the photos aren’t entirely sharp, and that’s because it was nighttime and quite dark. Menorca is an island that strongly preserves its traditions, and that is directly reflected in its architecture: the streets aren’t lit with state-of-the-art lighting, but rather with streetlamps featuring soft lights scattered throughout the villages.
However, even though the quality of the photos is far from excellent (especially in some shots), after converting them to black-and-white, I noticed a certain artistry in them. I think they perfectly capture the atmosphere of these nights.
As you can see, there’s sometimes sand or dirt on the ground. Although the streets are paved or tiled, for these festivals they cover everything with dirt to make it easier for the horses to pass through.
The festivals also feature amusement parks with two or three rides to enjoy, as well as a few booths where you can play games and win stuffed animals.
