Too Real for the Screen? The Cancellation of The OA Continues to Fuel Theories
The Netflix series The OA, abruptly canceled after its second season, strikes me as a true masterpiece. And I’ll confess something: I’m becoming increasingly convinced that it was taken off the air because it hit too close to home regarding certain uncomfortable truths.
Can I guarantee that those theories circulating about the multiverse are actually true? Clearly not. However, if you do a little digging online, you’ll discover a huge community of viewers and analysts of this existential phenomenon who all agree on one thing: the series revealed too much. It exposed the dynamics of other realities with such unsettling precision that many believe that was the real reason for its cancellation. Luckily, even though it was canceled, it wasn’t removed from the platform, so if these topics interest you and you haven’t seen it yet, go check it out right away.

Dimensional Travel, Experiments, and the Body’s Memory
What is The OA really about? The story, co-written by and starring Brit Marling alongside Zal Batmanglij, begins with a blind girl (Prairie Johnson) who reappears after having been missing for seven years. And she doesn’t just return—she has regained her sight completely. Her return reminded me in part of shows like Manifest, although in that series, the experience of death isn’t as clear from the start. Here, it is. Prairie reveals that during all that time, she was immersed in Near-Death Experiences (NDEs).
Over its two seasons, the narrative explores what lies on the other side of consciousness when the physical body fails. That’s where the character of Hap comes in—an obsessed scientist masterfully portrayed by Jason Isaacs—who recruits and holds captive young people who have returned from the dead (including Homer, played by Emory Cohen) to study their abilities and unravel the mystery of existence.
¿De qué trata realmente The OA?
When the protagonist manages to escape this confinement, she begins teaching a group of locals a series of specific body movements—a sort of language or physical technology capable of opening portals, healing, shifting consciousness between parallel dimensions, or rescuing someone in the throes of death.
Beyond Traditional Science Fiction
Of course, it’s a complex production. If you’re not drawn to existentialist themes about parallel lives and dimensional leaps, you might have a hard time getting into it. But if you’re interested in the theory, not only is it super entertaining, but it also raises fascinating hypotheses. It reminded me of that scene in the movie Interstellar, where the idea creeps in that we can observe other dimensions and realities from different time planes coexisting simultaneously. It also has those hints of an existential puzzle that we find in Dark (which, by the way, I never actually finished).
In the end, these kinds of productions always leave me thinking about the sheer number of stories that explore parallel realities and the underlying technology surrounding our own consciousness. The OA wasn’t just a fictional series—it was a poetic and scientific map of what it means to inhabit this plane. If you haven’t seen it, give yourself the chance to discover it before the algorithm decides to archive it forever.
