As I discussed yesterday, young men from across the globe are laying it all on the line right now to participate in the Little League World Series taking place in Williamsport Pennsylvania. We had four opening round games take place yesterday and now we have another four games on the schedule for today.
Similar to how the softball world series was set up, we have a main bracket and then a consolation bracket. The big difference between the two is the number of teams that are participating. Apparently, baseball is just more popular than softball. Where we saw a total of sixteen or so teams battling it out in the SWS, we have twenty teams being represented in the baseball world series, which makes the bracket a bit more complicated.
Also like the other series, I believe it is set up in a double elimination format, so even if you get a loss early on, that still doesn't mean you can't fight your way back to the championship game. There is the potential for a lot of greatness in this tournament.
Like I said, we had four games yesterday. Latin America took down the Caribbean Region in a close 2 to 1 ballgame which moves the Caribbean down to the consolation bracket. The Northwest Region shut out the Southeast Region with a 2 to 0 victory, and Asia-Pacific took Canada behind the woodshed beating them 7 to 0. Finally, the New England region lost a hard fought game against the Metro Region 2 to 1.
That sets things up for today where Australia takes on Mexico, The Great Lakes take on Mountain region, Japan faces Curacao, and The West Region battles the Midwest Region.
After that, we have one more day of first round games on Friday, before we move into the first round of elimination games on Saturday.
Tomorrow is Latin America vs. Panama, Northwest Region vs. Southwest Region, Europe-Africa vs. Asia-Pacific, and Mid-Atlantic vs. Metro.
Needless to say, it is going to be a lot of excitement over the next few weeks until the end of August.
