As our friend @angelica7 mentions in this week’s topic, “never give up” doesn’t follow a single line of thought or an absolute idea, since—depending on the context—it can be interpreted in different ways. Some may see it as a struggle, the drive to not give up on something, but we can also go to the other extreme, where we yield and accept that position. Based on this, I find it interesting what the concept itself reveals about the word “surrender”: accepting reality. Have you ever considered that an act of surrender might be a step toward acceptance that ultimately leads to our well-being? When does it stop being a defeat and become the best option we can choose?
First, we must understand that the essence of surrender is not a symbol or result of defeat or failure; and if we add the word “never” to it, we might be even more inclined to think that there is only one path and no turning back. In life, there may be situations where giving in brings you peace and benefits, while refusing to do so can only lead to a great deal of wear and tear by setting you on a path that—even if you follow it over and over again—will only bring frustration and exhaustion. Surrendering is also a test of courage and a way to recognize how far it’s best for you to go—something that’s so important because it helps us regulate our emotions and all our thoughts.
Obviously, when you’re faced with a sad reality, the idea of accepting it as it is can feel like a defeat. If you’re a proactive person, you’ll surely look for ways to change the situation—and that’s not a bad thing, because before giving in, there must also be an attempt and an effort that demonstrate your stance and determination. In this way, we can reach the point where we know we’ve already given it our all, and that giving in isn’t losing—it’s understanding the reality before you. From this point on, we stop thinking about what we can’t change and focus on what’s still truly within our reach. That’s why external circumstances can never dictate the attitude each of us develops in the face of a given situation—or even one that affects us collectively.
I can take the example of what most of us experience in our country regarding the electricity supply, and without going into too much detail on this issue, we all agree that it is a sad and harsh reality. We don’t have a definitive solution in our hands, but we’re not giving up because of that. Many people have gone so far as to adjust their activities and schedules so as not to be overwhelmed by a situation that, whether we like it or not, affects us physically, mentally, and emotionally. It’s hard to accept a reality like this, but if we don’t, we could foster a heavy, negative mindset that leads us into a kind of dead end. The best approach is to acknowledge what we’re facing today and invest our time and effort wisely—without thinking that we’ve lost the battle.
When we face an illness or suffer the loss of someone special, the urge to give up is quite strong—perhaps because we don’t know how to react or simply can’t come to terms with that reality. No one wants to go through an unpleasant experience, so the desire to give up is like a kind of plea we make to ourselves. We cling to what could have been but wasn’t, and in doing so, we become completely stuck while reality remains right there in front of us. When things go very well and bring us happiness, the idea of letting go comes easily and feels good, but when the opposite happens, it’s normal for it to hurt and cause pain—likely revealing our innate ability to find contentment with the reality of our lives.
Giving in or surrendering is a matter of attitude and understanding what it means for our lives. It’s not about winning or losing everything, but about realizing that in some cases—whether on one side or the other—the common factor must always point toward what brings us well-being. The problem isn’t whether or not you give in, but rather the reason and purpose behind it—and that’s why some choose to surrender to love yet are unable to give in to anything that threatens their happiness. Surrendering to life? It’s the best reality we must all accept, and if we’ve made it clear by now that giving in isn’t losing, then we’ll have the best perspective on a landscape that we can change from who we are—artists of our own being.
