On my way to work, I suddenly found myself sitting in the back seat of public transportation, and as I was sorting through my thoughts, one of my favorite songs started playing—Eros Ramazzotti’s “Otra como tú.” Within seconds, I began humming along to a gentle rhythm that gradually made me feel at ease. As the melody played on, I felt great—until I paused and looked to both sides: there was no one else there. I was alone in my own world, with no one to share these moments—as unexpected as they were special. “What did you expect? It’s always been this way.” It was perhaps a cry from deep within my soul, echoing what has always been a bitter reality.
By the time these things began to affect me, I realized that it was a long-standing pattern. For many years, I didn’t have anyone close to me with whom I could share my triumphs and my defeats. Everything seemed to carry the same bitterness that revealed a loneliness that wasn’t my own, because it was never my intention to take refuge in the emptiness and distance that offer nothing more. For some time, betrayals and deceptions carved out a very dark and deep hole from which I initially wanted to escape, but with no one to throw me a rope or reach out a hand, my heart began to harden. It was either that or start to crumble under apathy, and that’s how emotions gave up their fundamental role in my life.
The irony is that the one who won’t give you a drink now judges you for your parched soul, demanding forgiveness that will free them from a wound they have no intention of bearing. Crying would be the most sensible way to drain so much sorrow, but in the face of this drought, even the tears simply slide down without even moistening the surface of a battered heart. The little I was able to cultivate based on self-love led me to be both my own show and my own audience, with flattery and praise carried back and forth by the wind of my sadness. Because first came the night and then the day, and before I could clothe myself in joy, misfortune arrived and nested in a corner of my being. I searched for a reason to hope and returned empty-handed; the only thing that could keep me afloat was the borrowed inspiration of a few dreams that came and went just as quickly.
For a while, I managed to hold on, and I even came to believe that sooner or later everything would change. But then I stumbled upon discouragement and heartbreak, and my heart stopped beating, leaving me to live in a single, endless yawn. I was so alone that there’s no longer any room for anyone else; no story or experience can erase the dent that’s lodged deep in my soul. There are no longer any colors or shades of light and dark; everything seems to fall under the same umbrella of a life I failed to make the most of. Never before would I have longed so much for the past, just to take a single courageous step and break the chain that now holds my sanity captive. I was so alone that I couldn’t even keep myself company.
Coming to terms with a wound is an act of courage that not all of us can explain, because just like life itself, our experiences are painted in their own unique way. I was alone at the height of my success, and no one smiled; I was left alone to face my struggles, and no one knew. At times, my dreams were the wings of my inspiration, but why should one take flight when even the sky itself seems to ignore you? I was alone—lonely enough that now I don’t know where I am and am certain there’s no motivation to get anywhere. Amid songs and poems, the metaphor will remain of the one who knew nothing but to take shelter in the cold solitude.
