[Music] My take on Tears in heaven// Eric Clapton

A balm for the soul. A sublime sigh to which we all turn in search of hope. A song that lasts only a few minutes but transcends time and distance, reaching places where words alone sometimes cannot. “Tears in Heaven” is a timeless classic that reminds us of how fragile we are in the face of the tragedies that cut our lives short. This song is not a lament or a complaint about those who die; rather, from beginning to end, it offers us a melody imbued with hope—the certainty that behind it all, there is a better place.

You only need to hear the first line to sense that curiosity we all feel when we lose a loved one to death. Where will they go? How will they feel? If I see them again, will they recognize me? But the song itself gives us the answer—that it’s not just an illusion. Unlike other songs, I don’t feel a rejection of the pain that death brings us; rather, it conveys a peace that’s hard to explain because it springs from the faith of the heart. From the very first time I heard this song, I felt that calm that many of us long to feel when our souls feel crushed and shattered because of death. As Eric so aptly puts it in one part of the song, time may even bring you to your knees, but what it can never do is steal the hope you carry within you.

Many of us have identified with these kinds of songs, as if we were making the pain and feelings that fueled such inspiration our own. At this point, I wonder how Eric Clapton must have felt when he played this song for the first time, or what might have gone through his mind and heart with every phrase of it. I know that many artists have gone through something similar and how, despite facing the same adversity, they managed to take that step forward. It reminds me of what Avril Lavigne herself went through with the death of her grandfather—at that very moment, she was a young woman just starting her musical career, and she suffered that loss right as her career was taking off. Her reaction to cancel her plans would have been understandable, but she went out there and gave it her all in honor of her grandfather and her passion for music.

For me, the last part of the song is a passage that conveys a beautiful life lesson: “’Cause I know I don’t belong here in heaven.” When someone dies, we face the dilemma of either not accepting that they’re gone or longing to be with them, but if we hold on to hope, then all of this will be just a “see you later” and not a “goodbye forever.” All of this can be a great life lesson, and through a song like this, its meaning can give us what no one else could—the courage to keep going. “Tears in Heaven” is a bold anthem that doesn’t dwell on the pain of death but rather views it from the perspective of knowing that this isn’t the end—rather, it’s the beginning of something better that awaits us, where many who are no longer with us will return, never to leave again. "Tears in Heaven" is more than just a song. It's an anthem of hope.

SPANISH VERSION

¿A dónde irá?

" 'Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven".
