Carrie (Book Review) ESP/ENG

Pink and White Creative Decorative Lifestyle Vision Board Presentation.jpg

Hello, my dear friends and readers. Today, I want to tell you about a story I first encountered in its early days—initially through the film that was released back then. But as soon as I learned it was a book, I didn’t hesitate to head to a bookstore to pick up a copy. It was 1975; I was in secondary school, and everyone was talking about *Carrie*—the debut novel of one of the greatest figures in the horror genre, Stephen King.

Carrie is not like other girls; she grapples with far more internal conflict than most. To begin with, she was raised by a deeply disturbed, fanatically religious mother who treated the human body as a taboo—or even a sin—and refused to discuss it. In fact, whenever her mother did mention the body, it was always in a judgmental way. As a result, Carrie knew little to nothing about her own physical self; consequently, the arrival of her first period became a deeply traumatic experience. Not only was she terrified—believing she was dying—but her classmates were also incredibly cruel, mocking her in the worst possible way. Over time, Carrie begins to develop telekinetic powers, which she eventually unleashes to their full extent following a second, far more severe trauma—at which point her abilities spiral completely out of control.

One of the things that struck me most—after reading the book and recalling the imagery from the film I saw in the theater (and, in fact, this also applies to the films that came after the 1970s version)—is that the actresses who play Carrie are slim and pretty. However, the Carrie that Stephen King presents in his work is quite different: she is described as a heavy-set girl with acne, dressed in clothes made by her mother out of potato sacks. Furthermore, she didn’t use deodorant because her mother forbade it. In every respect, she was far removed from conventional standards of beauty—and that is, in essence, what the story is truly about: a fragile girl who is marginalized by everyone.

Another of the book’s strengths is its narrative; the author employs a chronicle-like structure, interweaving traditional storytelling with fictional newspaper clippings, police reports, excerpts from psychology texts, and even testimonies from survivors. In doing so, the book presents a multitude of perspectives, yet no single viewpoint is comprehensive enough to fully explain the tragedy that unfolded in that town.

Furthermore, it serves as a clear indictment—not only of school bullying and the consequences to which it can lead (such as suicide, murder, or depression)—but also of the abuse that begins within the home itself, as well as the prejudices and the lack of self-understanding that individuals may suffer from. Human beings have a right to understand their own bodies, emotions, and feelings in order to face the world; yet Carrie, despite her immense inner strength (her powers), was left defenseless because she did not know herself—all she possessed were the preconceived notions imposed by her mother’s deranged mind.

So, beyond the mystery and science fiction, the lesson Stephen King taught us through *Carrie* is about empathy and understanding toward those who appear vulnerable—because, deep down, we never know if—or when—they might reach their breaking point, revealing just how strong and destructive they could truly become. Well, thank you so much for reading my review; as always, I’m sending you lots of virtual kisses and hugs! 😘 🤗
