It’s been four months now since the tragic double earthquake hit my country on June 24th. In those first few days right after it happened, it was incredible to see how many people stepped up to lend a hand and bring aid to the affected areas. But I remember feeling a bit worried back then—I felt like many weren’t quite grasping the full scale of what had happened, and I knew help was going to be needed for the long haul.
And that’s exactly how it played out. Just two weeks in, influencers stopped visiting the disaster sites to film and hand out supplies. The heavy machinery brought in to clear the rubble was sent back to its home cities. By the one-month mark, international organizations had packed up their camps, and the poor families affected were left to pick up the pieces on their own.
My wife and I spent weeks reaching out to people everywhere, asking for support to bring aid to the Juan José Mora municipality in Carabobo State—better known as Morón. Many of the small rural hamlets on the outskirts of the city were hit the hardest, and in most of them, government aid still hasn't arrived. That’s why we saved up everything we received and have been distributing it gradually over time.
Thanks to that approach, we’ve been able to keep offering support up to this day. It might not be a lot, but we just want to do our part. Recently, through a friend in the Canary Islands, we arranged for a portion of the relief goods they were collecting to be delivered to Morón around this time. They handled the shipping logistics through the Salesian Fathers community after we provided all the necessary details, and we joined in to help deliver the supplies once they arrived.
We were recently in a community called La Victoria, on the road toward San Felipe in Yaracuy State, very close to the epicenters. We surveyed the families in the area and then called them up to receive two bags of groceries and 15 liters of mineral water. We also provided medication for those who are still recovering from injuries, and brought along toys and treats for the kids.
The area is still covered in rubble, with blocked streets and cracked, unsafe houses. There's still a massive need for support, especially when it comes to rebuilding. Food and basic essentials are always welcome, especially with the holidays coming up—we want to make sure these families don't feel forgotten during Christmas. We’ll definitely figure out a way to keep supporting them.
