[Movie] Spider-Man Review: Jean Grey, 'Brand New Day', and the Pitfalls of Plot Bloat

When all the Marvel hype first took off, I was super pumped because I grew up reading so many of their comics—with the 1997 X-Men run being my absolute favorite. Once the MCU hit, I was constantly on the edge of my seat hoping the X-Men would finally get adapted for the big screen. That was off the table for a long time since 20th Century Fox held the film rights, but once Disney bought the studio and reclaimed them, my hope was officially reignited.

Even though Fox delivered some decent adaptations, in my opinion, none of them matched the standard Marvel set during Phase One. One storyline that always felt like a major missed opportunity was Jean Grey’s character arc and her transformation into the Phoenix. She's one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe, and capturing that in live-action is no small feat. Naturally, learning that the new Spider-Man movie would introduce Jean Grey piqued my interest right away and made it a must-watch for me.

My hype shot up even higher when I found out Sadie Sink was cast as Jean. This girl has insane acting talent; out of the few episodes of Stranger Things I caught, she easily stood out as the real powerhouse among the younger cast. I loved how the movie handled her slow-burn reveal. Early on, I was convinced everything was setting up a Venom connection since this mysterious figure was hunting for "VMAX," only for it to turn out to be Jean retracing her sister's final moments before she died.

As for the Spider-Man storyline, it felt pretty familiar to me. Back in 2008, Brand New Day was a comic initiative meant to reconnect readers with the awkward, lovable Spidey we all grew up with, pulling him back from the overly mature adult he was becoming. While the movie adapted this reset quite solidly—which I definitely appreciate—the script felt bogged down by an overload of plot threads. Everything ties together in the end, sure, but the final execution ranges from genuinely great scenes to others that land with a thud.

For instance, I was blown away by the theater’s reaction: the crowd got way more emotional when MJ read Peter’s letter and learned about his memory loss than they did during Sadie Sink’s big reveal as Jean Grey. Maybe that wasn't the case everywhere, but to me, it was a clear sign that newer casual fans don't fully get what they're watching. Getting more hyped over a romance subplot than a major superhero reveal? Feels like they bought tickets for the wrong genre.

A lot of casual viewers might not realize that out of Marvel's entire roster, Spider-Man boasts by far the largest fanbase. Regardless of whether the movie is great or mediocre, despite the narrative bloat, noticeable CGI glitches that eagle-eyed viewers picked up on, its 2-hour and 24-minute runtime, and the fact that it doubles as a giant commercial for Doomsday—the True Believers are going to eat it up. It’s ironic that Marvel pulled a strategy straight out of 2008 and audiences are treating it like a ground-breaking twist. Revisiting Brand New Day brings Spidey back to his classic roots as the lovable underdog, but it trades away the chance to deliver something genuinely fresh and original.
