Kimi Antonelli Makes History: F1’s New King is Crowned!
Kimi Antonelli is finally a champion! He didn't pull it off in Austin, Texas, like I mentioned in my previous post, but he got it done in Mexico by finishing in third place. Honestly, he could afford to finish anywhere in the top 10 to clinch it—the only things that could have stopped him were a crash or a mechanical failure. But as always, everything worked like clockwork at Mercedes, and the young driver put on a phenomenal performance.
Why is Kimi's championship such a big deal? There are several reasons:
- He has become the youngest champion ever at 20 years old, breaking Sebastian Vettel's record—which he held for 10 years—of winning the title at 23.
- He is the first Italian champion in 73 years. The last one was Alberto Ascari in 1953 behind the wheel of a Ferrari 500, though with the huge difference that Ascari was 35.
- Antonelli kicks off the era of champions born in the 21st century; he's the very first of Generation Z. To put it into perspective, previous champions born in the nineties are Max Verstappen (1997) and Lando Norris (1999), while those from the eighties include Sebastian Vettel (1987) and Lewis Hamilton (1985).
- He also stands out as the youngest driver to ever secure a pole position and a race win.
- He is the youngest to bag 5 consecutive wins.
- He is the youngest driver to achieve a Grand Chelem in Monaco. For those unfamiliar with the term, it means taking pole position, winning the race, setting the fastest lap, and leading every single lap. Pulling this off is insanely difficult due to traffic, pit strategy, and managing flags or safety cars.
- It took 60 years for an Italian driver to win again at Monza—Ludovico Scarfiotti did it back in 1966. Kimi pulled it off this past September 6th with one of the most jaw-dropping performances I've ever seen. Starting P19 after an engine penalty, he pulled off 25 overtakes to take the win with just 3 laps to spare.
One might be tempted to think all these achievements are just down to his raw speed on track. However, those who watch him closely with a more technical eye state that it’s his rapid learning curve and retention capacity that truly make him elite. He’s aggressive, makes quick and precise decisions, and has the backing of the best team, allowing him to develop his maximum potential.
It is genuinely thrilling to witness the birth of a major motorsport star. It might still be early to call him the greatest, but if he keeps up this performance and pace, in just a few years we'll be looking at a brand-new F1 legend.
