I've started watching Nocturne, the new Apple TV series that premiered on October 30th. It already has two episodes out under a weekly release schedule, and it's looking really interesting. It's a psychological thriller, crime drama, and mystery all wrapped into one, based on the The Sandman novels by Lars Kepler. Right off the bat, the show grabs your attention because of its powerhouse cast, led by Liev Schreiber, Zazie Beetz, and Stephen Graham.
The plot follows Jonah Lynn (Liev Schreiber), who, after the loss of his wife and daughter, moves to a small town in Pennsylvania. He used to investigate a serial killer and was deeply traumatized by the experience, which is why he decided to retire. But everything changes when a young man presumed dead for three years suddenly turns up alive. This sparks hope of finding his sister, who vanished on the same exact day. All signs point to Jurek Walter (Stephen Graham), a chilling killer known for psychologically manipulating his victims.
His modus operandi is burying his victims alive with a bit of food and water, plus a narrow tube for air, letting them die a slow, agonizing death. He's locked away for life in a maximum-security psychiatric facility, but somehow, he manages to keep operating—presumably with the help of an accomplice. To find out if that's the case, Jonah allows his adopted daughter, FBI undercover agent Saga Bauer (Zazie Beetz), to go undercover inside the asylum to get close to Walter and squeeze info out of him before it's too late to save the girl.
As you can probably tell, it’s a crime psychological thriller much like many others—it’s not exactly reinventing the wheel—but what I've seen so far really works. The pilot hooks you with its core premise, making it clear right from the start that there's going to be plenty of mystery and gritty investigation to uncover the truth. So why is it worth the hype? Well, I was completely blown away by Stephen Graham’s performance as a serial killer. I know him best from his lead role in the Netflix series Adolescence, where he played a loving father—which is the polar opposite of what you get in Nocturne: a cold, calculating, and deeply unsettling mastermind.
After watching the first two episodes, I can definitely say it’s worth checking out. I did feel that after all the explosive reveals and mounting tension in the premiere, the second episode hit a bit of a lull and slowed down the pacing. Still, it closes out on a great note, dropping a killer hook that makes you desperate for episode three. I just hope it doesn't drag its feet too much moving forward and manages to keep that momentum going with steady investigative progress, mystery, and suspense.
