Coping With and Overcoming the Pain of a Tragedy —Just Reflections, No Rigid Guidelines—

No, there is no guide for emotionally overcoming tragedies or hardships; and while experts may describe certain phases, we cannot determine how long those phases will last, because everyone is different. However, there are some situations we should reflect on so that, in some way, we can focus a little more on overcoming this pain.
As Zul, @zulfrontado, says in his post, sometimes we don’t know what to say or how to help in moments like the ones Venezuela is going through right now, and what we want to say often gets held back—and, like a piece of paper we regret writing, ends up crumpled and in the trash because we feel that what we post won’t be enough to help overcome a tragedy like this, but the truth is that there are suggestions we can discuss and use to face a very painful situation in life.

In the end, we have to talk about it…
As a columnist for this community, @holos-lotus, following the two terrible earthquakes we experienced in Venezuela, I’ve tried to post without openly addressing the tragedy because I feel it’s a painful situation that many of us still haven’t fully accepted or understood.
The fact is that any personal, traumatic event—whether a tragedy or a crisis in a country, or a natural disaster that is just as devastating as a simple emotional breakdown that others might find easy to handle—can shatter a person and result in a loss of control over their life.
When we experience a difficult, painful situation involving loss—such as a crime, an attack, an earthquake, a flood, or a hurricane—the first things we feel are shock, fear, and confusion.
Emotions surge, driven by the surge of hormones that either trigger a flight response or paralyze us; we are overwhelmed and numb, unsure of what to do, and in the meantime, we gradually come to terms with the fact that something has happened, while the overload on our nervous system prevents us from even resting.
Here, the issue at hand is safety, and human beings—vulnerable and defenseless—experience firsthand the reality of a dangerous world; accepting this can exhaust us and prevent us from living peacefully again.
Thoughts of doubt lead to uncertainty, which causes physical discomfort and affects our mental health.
How difficult it is to accept a pain as great as the loss of hundreds of people!
Here, shock or denial, fear, and then sadness or grief give way to anger, helplessness, and then shame, with physical symptoms as evident as hypervigilance, unexplained pains, appetite disturbances, tremors, sudden chills, racing thoughts, and changes in how we rest and sleep.

With no intention of being disrespectful
Trying to tell a person how to act in the face of tragedy is disrespectful.
As I said, everyone experiences grief differently; some internalize it too much, while others externalize it and expose it to the world.
And times are different.
But one tries, in some way, to offer certain reflections to shed light or provide guidance; and it’s important to understand that, despite everything, if we are victims today, tomorrow we can become victors.
We must understand that spirituality opens paths for millions of people, so it’s worth seeking that inner experience that connects us with God or with the whole.
We must reflect, in some way, on the fact that in tragic moments, guilt will assert itself as a defense mechanism, but this will only intensify the pain.
And we must understand the situation because, furthermore, anger and resentment will increase that pain and lead to greater evils.
Likewise, try to understand that life consists of pain just as much as it does of joy and serenity, so forgiveness must be an important part—just as much as gratitude—of each of our daily routines.
Let’s remember that all of this stems from a choice, so we can indeed do it.

Clearing Away the Debris
Just as has happened in Venezuela, as the hours and days following the event pass, all we can do is clear away the debris.
Clearing away the damage to make way for recovery takes time.
For human beings, regaining a sense of normalcy and balance often takes a great deal of time and inner work.
There is no “right” way to do this, and in the helpguide.org guide: How to Cope with Traumatic Events, we can read that not ignoring how we feel is the first step toward coping.
It’s not about obsessively reliving the event over and over again through memories; on the contrary, it’s about keeping the mind occupied by seeking solutions.
Ultimately, the guide recommends getting back to your routine, taking care of yourself, keeping yourself and your home clean, and fulfilling your responsibilities toward your loved ones…
These actions help minimize anxiety, fear, and paralyzing despair, and while it’s true that at first we must put our routine and important decisions on hold, the goal is to seek solutions so we can resume our lives as soon as possible.
We’re all going to experience hardships, and every household has its own stories—all of which are important to those who live through them. That’s why the attitude with which we face difficult times will determine whether or not we’re able to move forward.
Let’s be honest: let’s experience the pain and grief, but without stopping ourselves from taking action.
Let’s respect the process, but let’s also offer a ray of hope to others.
Everything passes, because in the end, life always seeks balance.
And let’s never forget that all traumatic or difficult events lead only to transformations that, over time, will result in greater benefits.
