Trama - Plot
En esta historia conoceremos a Olive Smith, una estudiante de doctorado en Biología, que un día descubre que su mejor amiga siente algo por el chico que solía gustarle a ella y para demostrarle que ya lo supero finge estar conociendo a alguien. En un intento desesperado para que no descubra su mentira termina besando de imprevisto al profesor Adam Carlsen. Lo que parecía algo inocente se convierte en un trato entre ella y el temido profesor de fingir estar en una relación para lograr los fines de ambos. Acá empieza la aventura de fingir un romance mientras se van conociendo de verdad y una chispa de algo genuino surge entre ellos. Pero el mundo de las ciencias puede ser muy despiadado con las mujeres que intentan destacar y Olive deberá sortear los nuevos obstáculos que se presenten en su camino para lograr su objetivo profesional.
In this story, we’ll meet Olive Smith, a doctoral student in biology, who one day discovers that her best friend has feelings for the guy she used to like. To prove to her friend that she’s moved on, she pretends she’s seeing someone. In a desperate attempt to keep her lie from being exposed, she ends up unexpectedly kissing Professor Adam Carlsen. What seemed like an innocent moment turns into a deal between her and the feared professor: they’ll pretend to be in a relationship to achieve their mutual goals. This is where the adventure of faking a romance begins, as they get to know each other for real and a spark of something genuine emerges between them. But the world of science can be very ruthless toward women who try to stand out, and Olive will have to navigate the new obstacles that arise in her path to achieve her professional goal.
Reseña - Review
Esta película está basada en un libro que amo y por eso esperaba la adaptación con tantas ganas. Sobre todo porque parecía ser muy fiel y sí lo es, con algunos cambios y agregados, pero puedo decir que disfruté de ver la película. Como romcom es una muy buena opción y tiene el plus de que no solo hay romance, sino que habla de temas interesantes como las ciencias y todo ese mundo, también es un retrato a la misoginia y al machismo que hay dentro de estos ámbitos.
This movie is based on a book I love, which is why I was so excited for the adaptation. Especially because it seemed to be very faithful to the book—and it is, with a few changes and additions—but I can say I really enjoyed watching the movie. As a rom-com, it’s a great choice, and it has the added bonus that it’s not just about romance—it also explores interesting topics like science and that whole world, and it’s a portrait of the misogyny and machismo that exist within those fields.
Como adaptación creo que pudo haber sido mejor, pero igual estoy conforme. Me agradó la elección de los actores y sentí cierta química entre ellos, esto es importante para lo que espero ver de películas del género. También amé a los amigos de Olive, Anh es todo lo que está bien en la vida, amé la relación tan bonita que tienen, es de lo mejor de la película y Malcolm me hizo reír mucho. En sí, es una película con mucho humor. Me encanta que ella es la Olive que me imaginé que sería: alegre, espontánea y con cierta dulzura. Creo que a Adam lo representaron demasiado malhumorado y malo en general, el Adam del libro no es así, solo es introvertido y quiere que sus alumnos den lo mejor de sí mismos. Pero para nada es un tipo malhumorado, solo le falta un poco de tacto para expresar lo que quiere decir. Igual me divertí mucho con sus escenas y el hecho de que cada vez que aparecía ponían música de villano.
As an adaptation, I think it could have been better, but I’m still satisfied. I liked the casting, and I felt a certain chemistry between the actors—which is important for what I hope to see in movies of this genre. I also loved Olive’s friends; Anh is everything that’s right with life, and I loved the beautiful relationship they share—it’s one of the best parts of the movie—and Malcolm made me laugh a lot. Overall, it’s a very funny movie. I love that she’s the Olive I imagined her to be: cheerful, spontaneous, and sweet in her own way. I think they portrayed Adam as too grumpy and mean in general; the Adam in the book isn’t like that—he’s just introverted and wants his students to do their best. But he’s not a grumpy guy at all; he just lacks a bit of tact when expressing what he means. Still, I had a lot of fun with his scenes and the fact that every time he appeared, they played villain music.
El romance entre ellos estuvo bien, aunque si les tengo que ser sincera, no me pareció tan espontáneo y creíble como me hubiera gustado. Pero es solo mi lado exigente fan de estas historias. De todos modos me encantó verla, me reí bastante y sin duda, la volvería a ver. Creo que el problema es que yo esperaba muchísimo de la película, pero porque sé del potencial de la historia real. Igual esto no es un reproche, solo es mi punto de vista de lo que me hizo sentir.
The romance between them was fine, although if I'm being honest, it didn't seem as spontaneous and believable as I would have liked. But that's just me being a demanding fan of these kinds of stories. Anyway, I loved watching it, I laughed a lot, and I'd definitely watch it again. I think the problem is that I had really high expectations for the movie, but that’s because I know the potential of the true story. Still, this isn’t a criticism—it’s just my perspective on how it made me feel.
Me pareció que es bueno que también se vea todo el machismo que puede haber en estos ámbitos, por momentos la película refleja todo esto y puede ser chocante ver cómo suceden algunas situaciones donde hay un claro desequilibrio de poder, pero son reales y es muy necesario que se sepan. Así como hay buenos científicos, también hay quienes abusan de su estatus y poder, y acá se representa bien. Quizá pueda llegar a tomarse a mal algo que pasa hacia el final, pero por más que parezca que no hay represalias, les aseguro que sí las hay.
I thought it was good that the film also highlights all the sexism that can exist in these fields; at times, the movie reflects all of this, and it can be shocking to see certain situations unfold where there’s a clear power imbalance—but they’re real, and it’s very important that people know about them. Just as there are good scientists, there are also those who abuse their status and power, and this is portrayed well here. Something that happens toward the end might be taken the wrong way, but even though it may seem like there are no repercussions, I assure you there are.
En definitiva, es una historia que les recomiendo ver, es entretenida y trata un tema muy interesante. Me gusta destacar la amistad hermosa y desinteresada que se forma entre Olive y Anh, y todo lo que implica ser una mujer de ciencias.
All in all, it's a story I recommend you watch—it's entertaining and tackles a very interesting topic. I'd like to highlight the beautiful, selfless friendship that develops between Olive and Anh, and everything that comes with being a woman in science.
