Hello, dear Ladies of Hive! I hope you’re all doing great. This week, we have questions from @ifarmgirl for the weekly community contest. I invite you all to join in, and I’d like to thank my friend @naath for the invitation.
Do you have an internal critic? What is its favorite phrase? When does it speak the loudest? And if it were a person, what would it look like? How would you describe its personality?
Of course I have an inner critic—most of us do. The truth is, it can be very cruel and shows up without warning when my defenses are down, hitting me right where it hurts the most. This critic usually pops up to annoy us a little—or a lot, depending on the situation. I definitely hear it when I try to do something that stresses me out and scares me, and there it is with its lines like, “Why are you going to take that risk? PROCRASTINATE.” It also tends to make me feel small and like I can’t handle whatever I set out to do. But I can—I just have to silence it and remind myself of my power.
This is nothing more than our fears and insecurities taking shape in our minds to torment us. I’m trying to replace negative thoughts with positive ones every time they come up, but when I’m really overwhelmed, it gets kind of hard to silence that voice. So there it is, running wild with insults and demotivating remarks of all kinds. My inner critic loves to tell me that I’m stupid and not good enough, and it’s something I’ve been working on quite a bit for the past two months or so—trying not to pay attention to it and to counter it with positive affirmations, but every now and then it slips through.
I’d have a hard time seeing it as a person; the truth is, I imagine it as something inside me—it’s my inner voice that sometimes decides to whisper nasty things to me, like the devil on my right shoulder. When its voice gets louder than mine and I realize it, I yell at it and tell it to shut up, hahaha. The other day I scolded myself because I know it’s me who keeps going over the same thing in my head nonstop, and that’s not good. So when I get tired of my inner monologue, I yell at myself, “Enough, Erika!” It feels like I’m scolding myself—and I am—but it helps me break out of the loop of negative thoughts. It’s like snapping a paperclip shut; I’m sharing that tip in case it helps anyone.
What does true rest (downtime) look like for you? How do you give yourself more of it without feeling guilty?
True rest for me would be being able to do everything I enjoy without feeling guilty about not using that time to be productive. It almost seems as if we have to ask permission to enjoy a little leisure time. I think this has to do with our mindset—if we’re aware that we deserve some time to rest, we probably won’t feel guilty about relaxing. But if we have that mindset that we’re wasting time and that we should be using it to do productive things all the time, we’re bound to feel a little guilty.
I identify more with the second example, but I really try not to feel bad about having time for myself. I like to use my downtime to read, watch TV, and even reflect—yes, I like to sit and think, and I try to make sure it’s in a positive way. I’d also love to use that time for other things, but I don’t want to overload myself with activities either, because then I’d be back to point 2. Sometimes less is more.
That's perfect, and whenever I start to feel guilty, I tell myself that I deserve that time to rest and that I'm spending it doing what I really wanted to do—and if I don't want to do anything, that's okay, too, because it's my time and I decide how to use it. That's what I tell myself in those moments.
Well, friends, that wraps up my thoughts on these topics. I hope you enjoyed it, and I encourage all of you who are reading this to participate. Thank you for sticking with me this far and supporting my content. See you next time!
