📚 Book Review: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe [ES/EN]

¡Hola amigos lectores! Hoy les traigo la reseña acerca del libro El león, la bruja y el ropero de C. S. Lewis.

Hello, readers! Today I'm bringing you a review of C. S. Lewis's book The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

En esta historia seguimos a 4 hermanos que sus padres los mandaron al campo para escapar de los tiempos de guerra. Ellos viven con un profesor en una casa enorme y un día explorando el lugar, la más pequeña, Lucy, entra en un ropero que no tiene fondo y ahí se sumerge en la tierra mágica de Narnia, donde conoce a un fauno que le cuenta que ese lugar está bajo el dominio de la Bruja Blanca que tiene a todos aterrorizados. Al volver a su mundo, Lucy le cuenta a sus hermanos de su aventura pero nadie le cree. Hasta que otro día, los 4 entran al ropero y ahí vivirán la aventura más importante de sus vidas en Narnia. 

In this story, we follow four siblings whose parents sent them to the countryside to escape the war. They live with a professor in a huge house, and one day, while exploring the place, the youngest, Lucy, steps into a bottomless wardrobe and finds herself transported to the magical land of Narnia, where she meets a faun who tells her that the land is ruled by the White Witch, who has everyone living in fear. Upon returning to her world, Lucy tells her siblings about her adventure, but no one believes her. Until one day, the four of them enter the wardrobe, and there they will experience the most important adventure of their lives in Narnia.

Tenía mucha ilusión de empezar este libro porque disfruté de El sobrino del mago, pero este libro es el que más conozco de la historia y el que tengo más presente. Así que, por fin, sentí que estoy conociendo de verdad el mundo de Narnia. Me resultó muy curioso que el libro tuviera todo como para ser autoconclusivo porque tuvo un buen inicio y un buen cierre, así que me sorprendió la forma en qué sucedió todo. Y por supuesto, el saber que todavía hay más libros por leer. 

I was really looking forward to starting this book because I enjoyed The Magician’s Nephew, but this is the book I know best from the series and the one that’s most vivid in my memory. So, finally, I felt like I was truly getting to know the world of Narnia. I found it very interesting that the book seemed to have everything it needed to be self-contained—it had a strong beginning and a strong ending—so I was surprised by the way everything unfolded. And, of course, knowing that there are still more books to read.

Me agrado conocer a los hermanos, sobre todo a la pequeña Lucy a la que uno le toma mucho aprecio. Me resultó una niña muy inteligente y valiente para su edad. Susan me resultó muy madura y simpática, Peter todo un caballero dispuesto a la acción y Edmund el más rebelde y problemático, pero todos con un buen corazón.

I enjoyed meeting the siblings, especially little Lucy, whom one can’t help but grow very fond of. She struck me as a very intelligent and brave girl for her age. Susan struck me as very mature and friendly; Peter was a true gentleman, always ready for action; and Edmund was the most rebellious and troublesome, but they all had good hearts.

Adoré conocer a las nuevas criaturas de Narnia que entraron en esta historia, como el señor Tumnus, los castores y, por supuesto, ver a Aslan en acción en su máximo esplendor. Hubo una escena en particular que no me la esperaba y me dio mucha pena, pero como el libro está basado en la Biblia me imaginaba que se iba a resolver de la manera en que lo hizo, y tenía razón. Aunque igual fue dura de leer esa parte. Por otro lado, me dio mucha ternura la frase de que por culpa de la Bruja Blanca en Narnia siempre era invierno, pero nunca Navidad. Y que en un momento apareciera el mismísimo Papa Noel para dejarles obsequios a los niños, eso no me lo esperaba. Pero, definitivamente, en los cuentos infantiles todo es posible y la magia sigue su curso.

I loved meeting the new creatures of Narnia who appeared in this story, like Mr. Tumnus, the beavers, and, of course, seeing Aslan in action at his finest. There was one scene in particular that I didn’t expect, and it really saddened me, but since the book is based on the Bible, I figured it would turn out the way it did—and I was right. Still, that part was hard to read. On the other hand, I found the line about how, because of the White Witch, it was always winter in Narnia but never Christmas, really heartwarming. And I didn’t expect Santa Claus himself to show up out of nowhere to leave gifts for the children. But, of course, in children’s stories, anything is possible, and magic takes its course.

Me encantó este libro, es una historia muy tierna y nos habla acerca de la hermandad, y la valentía, pero también de la justicia y tantos otros valores, como del perdón y de los sacrificios desinteresados. Es una muy linda saga para leer junto a los más pequeños de la casa, y leer uno como adulto para seguir creyendo en la magia. Claro que seguiré leyendo los otros libros, quiero saber cómo sigue esta historia que recién estoy descubriendo. 

I loved this book—it’s a very heartwarming story that speaks to us about brotherhood and courage, but also about justice and so many other values, such as forgiveness and selfless sacrifice. It’s a lovely series to read with the little ones at home, and one that adults can enjoy to keep believing in magic. Of course, I’ll keep reading the other books—I want to know how this story, which I’m just discovering, unfolds.
