Hello, dear friends of Womentribe! I hope you’re all doing great. Today I’m stopping by to be part of @syllem’s new initiative in her “Inspiring Words” column. I’m happy to connect with her writing; this time, the topic is about unlearning old patterns so we can learn new ones that help us improve our lives.

I feel that, to some extent, our identity and our relationship with success—or whatever it may be—depends on the upbringing we had. This can lead to many limiting beliefs that take root in our minds because we’ve heard them repeated since we were little, and nothing absorbs information more readily than a child’s mind. I carry several old patterns inherited from my parents that I’m trying to break. For example, the idea that money is hard to come by and slips away easily—that reflects a sense of scarcity and difficulty in sustaining abundance. I recently realized that I tend to spend money with a sense of guilt, and that’s not good because it reflects a mindset that whatever I spend, I won’t be able to get back—and I realized that’s true because that’s how my mind is programmed. So I’m trying to change my mindset, and every time I have to make a significant purchase, I remind myself that just as I was able to earn that money, I’ll continue to earn it—that it isn’t difficult, and that I can sustain that abundance. I just have to unlearn the old belief and establish the new one. It seems simple, but it’s not at all—especially when I’m still hearing the same old phrases.

The same goes for the mindset of being productive—it seems that if you have free time, or if you’re not thinking about being productive and more efficient, you’re wasting time. That belief isn’t mine, but I hear it often; however, I choose not to pay attention to it. I want to unlearn the idea that more is better—you don’t have to fill your schedule with activities to feel good. You have to learn to be still and do nothing—just be connected with yourself and whatever you’re feeling or thinking during those precious moments of rest. It’s okay to want to rest and not be constantly productive; do that for yourselves and see how you feel.

What I did have to struggle with were the expectations placed on me, and then I realized that wasn’t what I wanted. I don’t want to follow in others’ footsteps; I want to forge my own path. I don’t want to imitate anyone; I don’t have to fill anyone else’s shoes—that’s not my place. So I’m letting go of the expectations others have of me. I’ve also let go of the idea that you need a partner to feel complete—I’m already complete. What I really want is someone who’s willing to walk alongside me, as my partner. I’m letting go of the idea that I have to be in control of everything and have my life figured out at this age. I’m distancing myself from what isn’t good for me and trying to work on my well-being in all areas of my life.

On the other hand, I’d like to unlearn the idea that I can do everything on my own—and yes, I can, but there’s nothing wrong with asking for help when I need it; that’s something I need to learn. I also want to unlearn everything I’ve absorbed over the years that has to do with feeling a lack of anything, whether it’s in the financial realm or in emotional relationships, which are the most common. As women, we’ve often been fed this idea that we have to compete with others—whether in beauty, charisma, glamour, talent, or whatever else. But no, we don’t need to compete with anyone; we don’t have to go out of our way to get someone else to notice us—that’s not our responsibility. We must be sure of our own worth and have confidence in ourselves—and in our ability to achieve everything we set out to do—without needing others’ approval. Without a doubt, there’s still a lot to unlearn, and a lot to learn. These are some of the reflections that came to mind, and I wanted to share them with you after reading the post.
