Hello, friends of the Holos & Lotus community! I hope you’re all doing great. I’m stopping by today to share something for you to think about. Taylor Swift recently released a new song that I really liked—it’s called “Babylon”—and in it, she basically talks about how we don’t realize everything we have until we lose it. I won’t be talking about the song itself, but rather about this reflection that got me thinking.
For some strange reason, human beings love to wallow in nostalgia. We find it hard to focus on the present, and instead we prefer to lose ourselves in the past or—for the more visionary among us—in the future. But in that looking back or forward, we forget what’s right in front of us at this very moment, and that’s when we fall into that spiral of—perhaps—feeling nostalgic for a past memory we’ll never experience again, thinking it was a better time, and, in the meantime, we remain absent from the present. What we fail to see today, we’ll surely remember later—once it’s part of the past— we’ll remember it and wish we’d appreciated it more.
I tend to be someone who looks back at the past quite a bit, but now I try not to do so by dwelling on everything that’s gone, but rather to remind myself of where I’ve come from and where I want to go. Staying in the present is still a challenge, but I try to be where I need to be and not miss anything important, so I don’t end up with that regret of not having taken the risk to try. And, of course, I value the moments I share with my loved ones much more, because I know that nothing lasts forever, and I don’t want to miss out on spending quality time with them and being there when they need me.
We shouldn’t take anything for granted. Sometimes we let our guard down, thinking we already have what we want, and stop making an effort—but we mustn’t fall into that trap. We must always continue to nurture what we consider important, even our closest relationships—the ones that have lasted for many years. We must never take them for granted, because that would be a mistake. That way, when the present becomes the past, we won’t feel bad about having let it slip away so easily. I’m aware that the demands of daily life and our responsibilities can be stressful and prevent us from being present in the lives of others, but we mustn’t lose sight of what’s important. There are countless examples—like not sending that message to a friend to see how they’re doing, and so the days go by; or not visiting our parents because we’re busy with other things. What seems like a safe haven can crumble very quickly, which is why I believe we need to be more mindful of this if we don’t want to regret it later.
I read somewhere that we need to learn to romanticize life—our day-to-day existence—even when the day is gray or conditions aren’t favorable. We should be grateful for this new dawn and the opportunity to have another day to do what we want and to live—to live, above all else. Without regrets, without sorrow, without guilt, but by giving our very best to everyone who is fortunate enough to cross our path.
Well, friends, this is my brief reflection on the topic. I hope you enjoyed it, and I encourage you to share your thoughts. Thank you for reading this far and supporting my content. See you next time!
