MLB: Los Dodgers en la lona..! [ESP/ENG] || OPINION

When you as a skipper put a dude on the bump with a microscopic 1.80 postseason ERA, you’re obviously doing it with total faith in the guy to get the job done. At least, that’s what the Dodgers' dugout boss Dave Roberts figured when he called on the veteran southpaw Blake Snell to start game three of the NLCS against the Milwaukee Brewers. But baseball never goes according to script. Why? Let's just say on the very first pitch of the ballgame, Venezuelan outfielder Jackson Chourio extended his lead as the Brew Crew's all-time postseason home run leader. A 98 MPH four-seamer was sent by Maracaibo´s native deep into the right-field bleachers, tying him for second place all-time in MLB history for leadoff taters in the playoffs. Roberts watched the guy trot the bases in absolute disbelief, as gray clouds began to gather over the Dodgers' NLCS future.

The reason? The Dodgers were supposed to be at Chavez Ravine watching the likely closing of that 0-2 deficit in the NLCS to make it a 1-2 series. Instead, the team with the second-fewest jacks in the regular season turned to that exact secret weapon to punch it to 3-0, moving them one step closer to a World Series ticket they haven't punched since 1982. That’s no small feat. The real heartbreaker was how the Blue crew blew the game. Because those gray clouds actually cleared out in the sixth when Will Smith stepped up with the ducks on the pond and crushed a long double off the left-field wall, greeting reliever Abner Uribe, who has been missing his spots in back-to-back outings but still got the ball from Pat Murphy after a gem of a start by Robert Gasser. Suddenly, the Dodgers were up 2-1 on Milwaukee, and the sun was shining again at Dodger Stadium. The crowd erupted into absolute pandemonium as hope rushed back into their hearts.

But no matter how good a ballclub is (and the Dodgers are), you’ve got to stick to the fundamentals of the game. I mean, you’re playing for your life in a game where anything less than a W puts your back against the wall. And instead of calling on the bullpen, Roberts lets Snell go back out to toe the slab for a seventh frame where the dark clouds rolled right back in. With nobody out, Snell issues a free pass to Andrew Vaughn, and that should have been it for the starter. But nope, Roberts sticks with Blake, setting up the absolute dagger of an at-bat. Jake Bauers locks into an epic battle with the Blue starter, and after falling behind 3-0 to start the count—a dead giveaway that Snell was completely gassed—the Brewer started protecting the dish with everything he had. On the tenth pitch, Bauers yanked a ball just inches foul down the right-field line. And on the very next offering, disaster struck: a two-run tank to flip the script and make it 3-2 in favor of a Brew Crew that simply refuses to quit.

Right after that, Garrett Mitchell launched a solo shot off Snell to push the lead to 4-2, in an incredible and baffling lack of action from Dave Roberts. Blake deserved a better exit than that. In the bottom of the eighth and the ninth frame, two insurance runs completely buried any hopes of a comeback, and who would’ve guessed it? Anyone who wagered on a Los Angeles sweep over Milwaukee must be having nightmares right about now. The Brew Crew look destined for glory, and they’ll roll out the same game plan today to lock down that long-awaited World Series berth. To pull it off, they’ll likely go with a bullpen game, a luxury they can absolutely afford with this kind of cushion. The Dodgers will send Tyler Glasnow to the bump, saddled with the brutal task of keeping a completely lost LA squad alive. If you ask me, I’ll be honest: I always believed in this Milwaukee team and was one of the few who thought they had a real shot to take the series from the Blue crew. But never via a sweep. Nobody saw that coming, and it could all be over today.

Feliz jornada. Salud y saludos.
