Back in the Frontier — Bronze II Fought Back: 13 Battles, a Demotion, and the Win That Paid the Daily

Day two ended with a promotion I actually got to keep: Bronze II, rating 460, and my first claimed Daily Reward. So day three had a modest plan. Play a session, claim the daily again (new house rule: the daily gets claimed every day, no exceptions), and enjoy life one league up. Thirteen battles later, I had been demoted, re-promoted, and taught exactly what Bronze II is. This is the free Lite account rayzo_lite, still no Spellbook, still nothing bought, still the same Foundations spine: Aurelia, New Beluroc Aegis in front with Taunt, Vengeful Monk behind him.

The .500 morning

The first eight battles were a coin flip that kept landing on its edge. Two quick losses to open: tre4nt finished me in three rounds, longdoo_lite in five, and 460 became 420 before I had warmed up. A forfeit win came next, because kenneth1803 never submitted a team, which is a victory the way a bye is a victory. Then stefano.massari showed me the new neighborhood. His cards were level 3. Mine are level 1, all of them, because level 1 is what free means. Five rounds, defeat, and no real moment where the fight turned, because it was never level to begin with.

Defeat against stefano.massari and his level 3 team

And yet. Battle six paired me with bigbillhart14, rating 1,000, more than double mine, running a level 2 summoner with level 2 and 3 cards at a 27-mana cap. My three-card team, Aegis, Monk and Kanaaq Miner, beat him in seven rounds. I do not fully understand it either, but the replay is linked below and it is the battle I keep coming back to. Level is an advantage, not a verdict, at least at low mana where expensive cards cannot all fit on the field.

Around those two poles the morning wobbled: a two-card win over a bot at a 24-mana cap, a loss to natcha888_lite (remember that name), and a second forfeit win to close the block. Eight battles, four wins, four losses, rating back to exactly 460, where it started. The Daily Reward sat one win away, lit up like a door I had not walked through.

One win away, for nine battles

Here is the part I would edit out if this blog were about looking good. The daily needed one more win. I played four battles to get it and lost all four. Twice I ran into potatoboi, a player with 33,540 collection power and a Gold Foil version of my own tank, and twice into natcha888_lite, who had apparently also decided that today was the day we settle things. Four defeats: 460, 440, 420, 400, 380. At 380 the game quietly moved me back down to Bronze III, and the daily prize on display shrank with the league, from two cards to one. Chasing a reward had cost me the league the reward was priced in. There is a lesson in there somewhere, and it is not a subtle one.

The last battle of the day

I gave it one final push, and the matchmaking screen, which has a sense of humor I do not share, produced natcha888_lite. Fourth meeting of the day. He had beaten me three times. Twenty-eight mana, my small team, his Dread Tafarian sustain build, eight rounds, the longest fight of the day. This time the Aegis held, the Monk did his quiet work, and the screen I had been staring at all evening finally changed.

Victory against natcha888_lite, with the reward ready to claim

  1. Bronze II again, second time today, and the Claim button was green. The daily paid out a Kanaaq Miner, an Ash Archer, and one Frontier Draw entry. The Ash Archer is an epic, the first epic card this account has ever owned, and it arrived as a consolation prize on my worst day of results so far. I will take it.

The claimed Daily Reward: Kanaaq Miner, Ash Archer, one draw entry

The honest ledger

Thirteen battles: 5 wins, 8 losses, my worst day by results and somehow the fullest one. Overall record now 21 wins, 13 losses, Bronze II at 400, with Bronze I a distant 300 points up the road. Glint remains 300, where it has been since day one; the daily pays in cards now, and today's cards were genuinely good. Two of my five wins were forfeits by opponents who never fielded a team, and I have decided to count them in the record and discount them in my head, which feels like the right exchange rate. And Bronze II has a face now: it looks like level-3 cards, gold foils, and thirty-three thousand power. The free deck can visit. Living there is another matter.

Replays, minus the two forfeits, which produce no replay link:
