Just Storm Windows - October 18, 2026 @goldenoakfarm

Middle pasture - frosted crop Oct 2026.jpg

Frosted middle pasture at dawn

On Sunday morning when I got up at 5:15AM the temps had dropped to 28F. I kept the wood stove going in the morning. It wasn’t supposed to get much above mid 50’sF all day.

I got my post up and a load in the dishwasher. After making breakfast I sat down to fold paper towels for the upcoming window washing.

I was, as you can see, very closely supervised. Once that was done, I got ready for the day and set up to start the storm window washing.

I did them in lots, the biggest ones first. I started about 9:30AM and finished at noon.

My brother had gone up around 9AM to try the mower, but it wouldn’t start. So he changed the charge from trickle to something stronger and said to try it in a few hours.

So I went up at 1PM after lunch and I got nothing at all. I knew the battery was old so figured it was time for a new one. All my interns had left to go play golf, my neighbor across the street wasn’t home, so I tried another neighbor.

He came right over, got the battery out and we headed to AutoZone and got a new one. Back at the barn, we got it in the mower but all we got was a few small lights came on, and a click each time we tried. We checked all we knew (not much) and gave up.

I left a message with the mower repair guy. My brother thinks the solenoid for the starter is shot. So I’m hoping to hear from my repair guy on Monday but we will see. He’s my age and was talking about retiring last spring, so I don’t know how much work he’s still doing. I do know he’s swamped as he’s really the only game in town.

So I had another afternoon off. I watched a movie and later got the house closed up and the wood stove going. My son started the masonry heater when I went to bed.

On Monday I have 2 appointments, my #2 intern is coming around 9AM, and I’m hoping she will come early as I have to get her started outside before the first appointment. I’ll have her cleaning out the frosted stuff in the Big garden.

Later, between appointments, I hope to get some of the storm doors in and washed. There are 3 to do. She also needs to move all the squash to the cellar into the wire cages. It’s a bit early, usually I’d leave them another week, but we have to do windows where they are in the office.

There’s some other things for her to do also. Because of the afternoon appointment, if the mower were running, I couldn’t use it. I’ll be too wiped out the rest of the week, and the leaves continue to fall from the white oak. That’s going to be a mess to clean up…

I’ve got kefir cheese to tend to, the kitchen to clean up, and shower to do. So a rather easy day but busy.

  • Looks like the frost made south to you. Our house has relatively new windows and we don't put up storm windows. I've wondered if we should. I will do a little research on that today. Sometime a good rap on the solenoid will "unstick" it and get the starter to engage. But thats just buying time, it will still need replaced if thats the problem. Better to get it fixed.

At least you could work on windows and get that project underway. I hope you can get the mower fixed, it is always discouraging to troubleshoot what could be wrong. Well, now you have a new battery!

  • Hope your mower gets fixed very soon! Speaking of the cold weather, here in Sylhet, Bangladesh, it feels a bit chilly in the mornings, though afternoons are still quite warm. But from the look of the weather, proper winter seems to be just around the corner!

Well!, nothing really beats, a cozy and an 'unexpected afternoon off' after much much wrestling, with a 'stubborn mower' and the cold! You've been really busy, am glad you rather has an easy day, instead!

Ohhh! Btw 'leaf rake' does a quick job to collect the leaves fallen! But it's still a job to be done, to clear the mess.
