More Cellar Work - October 17, 2026 @goldenoakfarm

Storm windows upstairs crop Oct 2026.jpg

On Saturday morning I was up about 5:15AM and got both posts up finally. I got a load in the dishwasher and went down to the cellar to move over the storm windows to come upstairs.

My #2 intern arrived about 9:15AM and tried to get her sister up. We decided that they’d move the freezer in the afternoon when they got back from visiting relatives. In the time we had left, we’d do the other things on the list.

My #2 intern brought all the storm windows up. There are 31 of them, and I have to have them all washed by Tuesday morning.

Next we checked the level of the 3 freezers. They weren’t bad at all.

Next we moved the file cabinets and stored the wooden crates beside them. She went up to try to get #1 intern up and I headed to the barn to get a small pallet that had appeared a while back.

We got the new AC’s on the pallet and the dehumidifier on top.

I’d finally got the truck started (needs a new starter badly) and brought it around to by the bulkhead.

The last thing we did was get the dead freezer on the rollers and move it around to the bulkhead.

Their mom arrived and took the 2 of them off to visit relatives.

I went and sat down for a long time as I had to mow and would need all my energy. I headed out at 1PM to clean up the yard for mowing. I also collected all the watering equipment that might be damaged by the hard frost coming Saturday night.

It was cold, barely 50F and breezy and I was cold. I headed up to the barn to get the mower and found the battery dead. So I messaged my brother about it.

Then I went back to the house to warm up and ended up dozing on the couch for 1½ hours. The 2 interns arrived back and got the freezer out of the cellar and back into the barn. Then they headed out to get their nails done.

An hour or so later they came back and showed me the pretty nails. I got the wood stove going around 4:30PM. My brother stopped by the barn and put the charger on the mower battery. After that I decided to get up and make some supper. I was going to make flounder and sweet potato fries.

I thought I had the fries in the freezer upstairs but couldn’t find them. That did it! I was sick of not find the food I needed! So I got a small basket and started unloading all the stuff out of the 2 fridge freezers and taking the stuff that didn’t belong there down to the big freezers and putting it where it belonged.

It took 5 trips but now we can see what is in the freezers. There’s going to be a new rule regarding these 2 freezers: if you aren’t going to cook it in 48 hours, it belongs down in your cubbies. Or if you’ve opened something like a bag of corn and didn’t use it all, that can stay in the freezer. I found 4 bags of partially used corn belonging to my #1 intern! So now we can find things when we need them.

But the 5 trips up and down stairs finished me off. I got supper made and pulled the shades as it’s to get pretty cold during the night. I just sat playing solitaire until bedtime. I got the masonry heater going around 7PM. It still had coals from the night before.

On Sunday I have to try to get the kitchen cleaned up, wash a lot of the windows, and if the mower will start, mow the yard. It’s to be a sunny but cold day again.

  • We have two big freezers in our detached garage. I would love to get a small upright freezer to put in the kitchen, but I'd have to move a lot of stuff around and haven't figure out the logistics yet. I end up not using things in the freezers because in the winter it is too difficult to go out there in the ice and snow to get things. Still working on a solution!

Well!, that's really an impressive effort, you getting the 'homestead' ready for the winter. Kudos to you, for all that hardwork.

  • Great effort! Organizing everything for the cold season is a huge task.

  • My son recently had to replace the starter in the old car I gave him when he moved away from home. He lives in a city in the South. To avoid paying a tow, him and a couple of friend pushed it several blocks to the nearest shop. Being in the South, seeing someone pushing a car is not that unusual. I told him it happens and I wouldn't be surprised if he got some help. Sure enough a few random people joined in and helped them out with the push 😆

Just trying to keep three freezers organized is hard. I find myself organizing them off and on; it is an ongoing process. lol Doing all those stairs; not surprised it put you over the top for the day.
