Sewing and Storm Doors - October 19, 2026 @goldenoakfarm

Early morning color around the white oak tree

On Monday morning I was up around 5AM and got my post up. I got a load in the dishwasher and decided I had to fix my heavy hooded sweatshirt. The heavy duty plastic zipper would not stay closed when zipped.

It’s seen heavy use but is still perfectly serviceable so it would get repaired. I couldn’t afford to have a new zipper put into it, so something else had to be done.

Buttons - morning's work crop Oct 2026.jpg

I had until 9AM when my #2 intern arrived and my appointment called. So I went upstairs and went through my packratted sewing supplies. I had buttons from my grandmother, a pull string from another hooded sweatshirt, and some heavy waxed carpet thread. I found a suitable sturdy needle and brought it all down to my chair.

The plan was to put buttons on far enough over that the frog closures would keep the front (mostly) shut. I had 4 matching buttons and got those on and then sat and made 6 frogs out of the hood string. I managed to get four frogs on by the time I had the appointment and my #2 intern had finished her errand.

She had also taken the squash down to the root cellar and put them safely away.

Front door storm on

We started on the office door because it’s the hardest. We got the trim inside and out washed and then got the window in the storm door. Then we got all the windows inside and out washed and moved to the front door.

We got the upper trim on the front porch, and the trim around the door washed, then we got the storm door in. We washed the storm window and got the protectors back on, but didn’t do the other door windows.

The last one was the back door and we got that done the same way pretty quickly. We finished at 12:30PM and I got a phone call. It was the van driver reminding me he would pick me up in ½ hour. Oops! I’d forgotten he came an hour early for transport.

So I zoomed around getting changed and eating lunch and was ready right at 1PM. After the appointment when I finally got home (doctor’s office is at 6’s and 7’s atm) I went upstairs and found 2 more button, heavier duty ones.

I sewed the bottom 2 on much more sturdily and the frogs also. It seems like it should work fine, but I’ll find out on the first cold windy day…

My son had gone out to pressure wash the north side of the house when I got home. He came back in about 20 minutes later.

He’d gotten the small side on far left done when the pressure hose blew out. Sigh… If it’s not one thing, it’s 6 others…

Last time I looked to replace this hose, it wasn’t available any more. So it doesn’t look like the pressure washing gets done this year. I can’t afford another pressure washer.

I made supper, pulled shades and eventually got the wood stove going. It was to be mid 40’sF during the night and that would be enough.

On Tuesday I start the windows and I sure hope the person shows up. I’m not going to repeat last year’s fiasco. It took 3 workers who never showed before my previous worker (who starts a teaching job on Tuesday) finally came out and got them done. My hopes aren’t high…

Great way to save the hoody, Pam. Very clever, and I bet it works out fine for you. I swear that companies no longer carry too many spare parts after so many years. It sure keeps the economy rolling when you have to purchase new items.

  • Nice repair job on the sweatshirt. Even looks stylish like the buttons you see on a heavy wool sweater 🙂 and I love those screened in bins you put the squash in. I've commented on them before. Maybe that should be my winter project once I can't get outside 🤔

I love the color of the oak tree! That's one of the things I love about fall because the trees turn into such beautiful colors. It's so relaxing to see, especially when it's the first thing you see at the start of your day. It's like having a little moment of peace before facing a busy and long day.

Well!, I must say, that's really such a 'creative way' to super fix your 'sweatshirt zipper', and that lovely yourself in the selfie, really beautiful one. Besides, getting those 'storm doors' earnestly prepped, much before, the severe cold hits, is for sure, a huge win, the hard and smart work continues.

  • I've replaced several zippers over the years, and it's definitely not my favorite task. You came up with a creative alternative for sure.

  • Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your family's daily moments with us; I truly enjoy reading them. They remind me so much of our own family life. Even though we are from Bangladesh and you are in another country, there are so many striking similarities in our everyday routines, which is why I love following your posts. Wishing you all the best and good health.
