After resting at our hotel for more than three hours, my husband and I decided to go out and find a restaurant for dinner. After our long rest, we felt refreshed and I was excited to explore Tbilisi's beautiful surroundings. I was happy to see that the weather was good, although the air was still cold. As we walked outside our hotel, we never imagined that we would find an interesting historical attraction just a few minutes away. We were surprised when we came across the Old Town Wall Ruins of Tbilisi. I learned that the Old Town Wall Ruins were discovered during street renovations. Instead of covering them again, they were preserved below the modern street level as an open-air archaeological display. I find it amazing that these old walls have been kept for people to see and learn about Tbilisi's history. It was a wonderful discovery for my husband and me during our simple walk.
As we continued our walk we passed by this house built directly on top of the rugged stone. It features prominent multi-tiered curved wooden balconies which are an iconic hallmark of 19th century Georgian urban architecture. My husband and I enjoyed admiring this old house because it showed us a glimpse of Tbilisi's history. It was wonderful to discover such a unique building while exploring the charming streets of the city.
We came across this interesting sculpture, so I went closer and searched for information online. The statue showed a man standing with his arms crossed while looking out toward the city. I learned that it was the Statue of Shota Kavlashvili, honoring an influential Georgian architect and historic preservationist.
I noticed a monument that made me curious about who the person was, so I searched for information and learned that it was Revaz Laghidze, a famous Georgian composer best known for writing “Tbiliso,” a beloved song about Tbilisi.
We encountered another sculpture that caught my attention. So I searched again and learned that he was Ioane Petritsi (John Petritzos), a Georgian philosopher who lived during the 11th and 12th centuries. My husband and I enjoyed discovering these sculptures along the way because each one introduced us to a different part of Georgian culture.
As we walked further, my husband and I discovered this old curved wall made of stone and brick. It looked like part of a historical castle or defensive tower. What caught my attention was the beautiful mix of old and modern buildings beside it. One side had a traditional curved balcony while the other combined modern architecture with ancient stonework.
As we ended our walk around the Old Town Walls of Tbilisi, my husband and I felt happy with our little adventure. We enjoyed seeing the old walls, unique buildings, and historical sculptures along the way.
