The second stop for our third day tour was the historic landmark in Ananuri village. Our tour guide introduced the place as Ananuri Fortress. I was amazed as I walked towards the entrance of the fortress. It really caught our attention with its ancient stone walls and tall defensive towers that looked like a place from another time.
We went straight to the back of the fortress. Our tour guide told us this was a stone bell tower. The structure features decorative arches supported by eight-sided columns. It is capped with a tall pyramid stone tiled roof and topped with a cross. The fortress stands near the Aragvi River and the beautiful Zhinvali Reservoir.
I really was fascinated by the area. There were two churches in the fortress. The first church that we went to was the Church of the Assumption. The church has a simple yet impressive appearance that reflects the traditional Georgian architectural style. There's a large carved Georgian cross that dominates the upper central portion of the wall. Its walls feature intricate stone carvings and decorative details including beautiful patterns around the windows and entrance.
In front of the church, my husband and I noticed the old graves that added a solemn and meaningful touch to the historic surroundings. Our tour guide told us that some graves in this historic complex are associated with members of the Aragvi noble family who once ruled the surrounding region.
We went inside the church. Our tour guide told me that I could take pictures. When my husband and I entered the Church of the Assumption we were greeted by a peaceful and solemn atmosphere. The interior was simple with stone walls and beautiful details that reflected the church's long history. Paintings of saints and frescoes on the walls that showed stories from the Christian faith. We took our time to value the sacred place. I felt peace and respect as we explored the church.
There was also a small church inside Ananuri Fortress but we could not go inside because it was closed during our visit. My husband and I were content to admire its exterior and take some photos. We appreciated its simple beauty and the history it held.
One of the interesting structures we saw at Ananuri Fortress was the old watchtower. Its tall stone walls and narrow openings showed how it was built for protection and keeping watch over the surrounding area. We enjoyed taking photos of this old structure and admiring its unique design.
Ananuri Fortress was truly a wonderful stop on our Georgian adventure. We were happy to explore this historic place, admire its ancient churches and watchtowers and learn more about Georgia's rich history.
