***My object
The object that defines me isn’t adorned; it isn’t a piece of jewellery, let alone a chest or something that shines like the stars; my object is so simple that it goes unnoticed and, believe it or not, that’s exactly what I’ve always wanted to achieve. My meaningful object is a glass jar, just as it is, transparent, neither large nor small, useful for storing things, but not condiments, noodles or rice.
This object, which changes colour depending on what I put inside it, reflects my own light and darkness; for sometimes it seems as though I’ve placed an entire colony of fireflies inside, whilst at other times it seems as though I’ve cut out pieces of the dark night. This object embodies the duality of my own existence; it shifts from summer to winter, skipping over autumn 🍁 and spring 🦋, and a secret about this object that you might like to know is that it has no tangible bottom, however much you might see through its fine, delicate glass.
And although, as I said, its glass looks and ought to be delicate, the truth is that it’s made of a strange alloy—so strong and durable that, no matter how many times it falls and rolls under the table, chair or bed, it doesn’t break, nor does it even crack, and so there are no fissures; but when it falls, what’s inside mixes together, creating chaos – whether it’s the kind that’s lovely, the kind that hurts, or the kind that simply overwhelms us.
My symbolic object holds my memories, my experiences, my own style, my longings and dreams, and, of course, my fears and demons too; and although what it contains is more tangible than it seems, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, does it?
An exercise in introspection
Years ago, as a personal project and without even knowing about the platform, I set myself the task of finding an object that represented who I am. That was when I saw the glass jar and said to myself: ‘That’s what you’re like: transparent, fragile, helpful’.
But, looking deeper, I noticed other things. For example: just like the glass jar, I change colour depending on what’s kept inside; in that sense, I’m a chameleon that changes to protect itself and its loved ones.
The jar contains, just as I contain the world of my family so that it doesn’t overwhelm them. The jar serves a specific purpose, and I define how to help others. A jar is transparent: you know full well that what’s inside either does you good or harms you, and that is exactly how I present myself to the world today. Just as I can be calm and keep quiet, I can also protect and lash out.
Despite defining myself in this way, beneath this object, I feel I can be different in many respects: some elegant, like a refined jar of essential oils capable of easing even the most intense tensions; in many others, a small jar, the sort that holds sweets and becomes a treasure for children; in yet others, a large jar that stores food to nourish the family; and, very rarely, a tiny little jar, seemingly harmless, but which silently bears the word ‘poison’ ☠️ on the inside.
At the end of the day, we may have a thousand favourite objects, the sort that we look at and which bring back memories; for example, in my case, they are pregnancy tests, the little clips that held my daughters’ umbilical cords in place, and also their bracelets. In a way, these objects define my role as a mother, yet they are not a complete definition, as I am much more than just a mother and a wife.
Therefore, objects define us in certain ways, but there’s always one that stands out above the rest; because when we get to know ourselves, we know exactly which object defines us in every sense—and why.
Do you already know which object represents you?
