Tinta Indeleble

—No te asustes, tía manzana.

Indelible Ink

Shadowless Bodies

Day 0

Everything begins, everything ends, and in the midst of it all we find ourselves, comfortably watching the events that have begun to unfold. However, our nature keeps us rooted to the spot, because it is easier to react in the midst of chaos than to do so when that chaos has only just extinguished the lights that keep everything clear.

Human indolence is the evil we all carry, and to a certain extent it is not bad, but when life depends on taking urgent action, that indolence takes on a new name, literally becoming ‘suicide’.

And whilst everyone remains in their bubbles of half-hearted normality, I began to piece together the ends of those broken threads, realising with astonishment that tomorrow… I don’t know if that tomorrow really exists.

Day 1

The sun rose in the east as it had done every day since the world began, but there was that something different that everyone saw yet overlooked. I remained silent, knowing that others noticed it and ignored it; I also saw those who warned of it and were locked away in cells, branded as ‘alarmists’, although the real label they bore was ‘disturbance and chaos in the public sector’.

Whilst everyone remained immersed in their own worlds, I looked at the dark shadows beneath our very feet, part of our very essence, now marked by a sort of indelible black ink that clung to all living things, regardless of species. However, objects continued to reflect the shadows in the same shade they always had.

And as I analysed these details in my mind, I realised something macabre… we could not escape our shadows, however much we might wish to.

Day 2

Summer had faded away in the middle of January, as if, the moment we went to sleep, it had packed its bags and left – or rather, fled so as not to witness the carnage. Yet the bitter cold, the overcast sky and the few raindrops falling on the rooftops gave no warning to the unsuspecting.

Meanwhile, the news programmes were searching for far-fetched explanations; after all, it was all down to ‘global warming’, and although this phenomenon does exist, it wasn’t to blame.

I got out of bed shivering with cold; after all, the night before the temperature had hovered around 25 degrees, and now the thermometer read a mere 5 degrees. My arms, as cold as ice itself, made them look even whiter than they already were.

I opened the wardrobe and rummaged right to the back; there were my winter clothes, packed in a small suitcase my mother had given me two years ago. I took out the woollen hat, the gloves, the scarf and the thick jacket. There I was, looking at myself in the mirror: wrapped up warm, cosy, bewildered.

I took a step across the carpet to the shoe rack to fetch my boots, and I felt it. For the first time, it made itself felt – deliberately, strongly and terrifyingly.

Could it be that it needs the cold to wake up?

Day 3

The world stood still, and there I was, amongst them; motionless, my gaze still fixed on the cobbler as I watched the sun set and night fall. The tingling sensation spread from my feet up to my ankles: something wanted to escape, and I knew exactly what it was.

My shadow seemed to be trying to leave me, as if it were an alter ego or something of the sort. Deep down, I told myself to stay calm, that nothing would happen. ‘What a lie that was’; I didn’t even know if I’d see another dawn. Suddenly, a strange humming echoed across the sky and everything turned black—blacker than the very shadow created by ink.

When I woke up, I felt terror, but there was the sun, the summer heat, the blazing light. As I listened to the television, I finally regained the ability to move.

‘Today is Tuesday the 13th, remember not to walk under a ladder,’ said the presenter, laughing, and my face tensed instantly.

Yesterday had been Tuesday the 13th.

Day 4

The presenter was laughing just as I remembered, but there was one difference: yesterday she’d been wrapped up warm, and today her clothes reflected the summer. Slowly, I shed the layers of warm clothing and put on something comfortable.

I spent the morning like an automaton; I looked out of the window at people going about their routines, nobody talking about yesterday’s event, each person in their own bubble whilst mine was completely shattered.

The sun was still beating down fiercely. Everything was the same… except for one thing.

As I left the house, around 12:00, I found myself staring at the shadow of a neighbour who’d come out to call her cat. Her shadow remained attached to her, but it was longer and even darker. I took a deep breath—I’m not sure whether out of relief or resignation.

Suddenly, a neighbour walked past with his three children. The children always used to pop into my garden and shout at me to ask for an apple from the tree: mischievous, good-natured children. The youngest came up to me and tugged at my T-shirt, gesturing to me.

I leaned towards the little boy and he leaned close to my ear to whisper a sentence I hadn’t realised:

‘Don’t be scared, Aunt Apple.’ ‘Your shadow isn’t at your feet, and neither is mine. It went away yesterday when the sky roared, after it got really cold,’ he said with unflinching calm whilst his father called out to him, and he ran off after them.

It was true. The boy was running without his shadow, and when I looked at my feet, mine wasn’t there either.

Where had the shadows gone?

Day 5

I spent the night awake—or rather, it was a vigil—alert to every sound, to everything. Tonight the sky did not rumble nor was it cold; there was only a silence so deep it was unsettling.

As the first ray of sunlight appeared, I ran out into the garden, my heart pounding too loudly. The fruit from the tree fell heavily onto the lawn, as if they were stones rather than apples. I stood there for a long time, looking at everyone’s feet: many still had their shadows—elongated, almost detached—whilst others, like me, no longer had them.

Suddenly I saw little Mateo. He was running frantically and clung to my leg as if it were his safe haven.

‘What’s going on?’ I asked him.

‘Dad, Mum and my brothers’ shadows left last night and they were left like statues in their beds. I’m scared, Aunt Apple! Will the same thing happen to us?’ he cried, bursting into the kind of tears a five-year-old might shed.

Day 6

Theoretically, thirteen days have passed since the incident. Many have been turned to stone, from Mateo’s parents to the apples in my garden. For some strange reason, the boy and I are still fine, although I’m keeping us hidden, because on some nights I’ve noticed a thread of ink trying to seep in through the window.

However, Mateo discovered something strange: the shadow doesn’t stick to cats, so we’ve left cat hair all over the house.

The neighbour has also turned to stone and her cat now lives with me too. I don’t know how long we’ll last; I don’t know if this is a dream, but if you’re out there and your shadow has left you and you’re still alive, come and find us; we can make it if we stick together…

Excelente trabajo.

What a fabulous story! And, starting at the end, I’d say it shows that cats protect us from the dark side, the one we often cannot see with our human eyes, but which those of us with a sensitivity beyond what is comprehensible can sense.

That we are nothing without our shadows, or rather, that it is the shadows that keep us human and not made of stone… that’s a good question. I still have my shadow, but if one day it were to disappear, I’d go looking for them!! An excellent story, thank you very much and a big hug!💗
