Digital Sketch 008: Color and Shape Canopy
I was a challenge and fun experience just getting lost in filling the canvas with as many shapes and colors as possible until a whole world takes shape. I didn't reference anything external for this one; I just kept layering form upon form, color upon color, building up the composition until this view finally emerged. I was thinking about beautiful patterns of foliage dance as the wind blows and seeing it from below the canopy. Working purely on my phone, it’s all about letting the blocks of color interact—mixing vibrant yellows, deep blues, and unexpected oranges into a puzzle of shapes overhead. You just keep blocking things in, stacking and weaving the shapes together, letting the process dictate where the canvas goes until it feels complete despite some missed areas and lines. The assortment of colors help hide those. It’s a fun way to approach a piece when you have no fixed destination in mind, just a blank screen and a palette of confusing shades. I’m curious when you’re filling a canvas from scratch, do you prefer starting with a bold splash of color, or do you carefully piece the shapes together one by one?
