Hello friends, good vibes to everyone.

Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.

Day 24 of the spooky season, and today we’re looking at another iconic figure of this time of year: Art the Clown, from a film series—or rather, a trilogy—that is considered a classic of the horror/slasher genre. We’ll be focusing on the first film, though if you’d like more context on the character, there are several short films that explore his background. Personally, the slasher subgenre is one of my favorites—largely because you never quite know what you’re in for. No two serial killers are the same; the nature of their kills often reflects their specific traumas and just how far gone they truly are. I’ve seen plenty of films in this vein, but this one features a particular death that genuinely caught me off guard—something I had NEVER seen before—which perfectly illustrates this character’s fractured state of mind.

Art the Clown is a killer disguised as the most sinister clown you could possibly imagine. Not only is he completely silent—he never utters a sound—but his actions and behavior reveal him to be a total sadist and psychopath. On Halloween night, two friends, Tara and Dawn, find themselves stranded after discovering a flat tire. To pass the time, they decide to grab a bite to eat at a nearby pizzeria, unaware that this will mark the beginning of their nightmare. Art has already been keeping an eye on the two women for some time, and it is at this pizzeria that he has his first close encounter with them. The situation is incredibly uncomfortable; the vibe this clown gives off is truly chilling, though, initially, nothing happens beyond an altercation with the owner of the pizzeria.

After all this, the friends part ways; one stays in the car while the other enters an old building in search of a restroom—and that would be the last time they ever saw each other alive. From this point on, a harrowing ordeal begins, with Dawn becoming the first victim, while Tara does everything in her power to survive. Meanwhile, Tara’s sister is on her way to find them—due to the situation with the car—and soon becomes a third captive in Art’s twisted game. I have to say, I was genuinely stunned by one of the deaths—the one Dawn suffers—as it’s something I’ve truly never seen before. It serves as an unmistakable display of this clown’s perverse and disturbing nature, while also hinting at the deep-seated trauma he harbors regarding women—specifically, his mother. It’s one of the most explicit and graphic sequences I can recall in any slasher film. Is it realistic? A qualified doctor would certainly say no—but believe me, that doesn’t really matter.

The film’s greatest strength is, without a doubt, its death scenes. They are all highly visual, carry a clear psychological weight, and feature an extreme, unrestrained level of violence—almost as if they’re an act of vengeance. The plot, however, is as simple as it gets; there’s no real backstory, no context for the characters—and even less for the clown, whose origins remain unexplained. In that regard, the film lacks a bit of substance. It focuses entirely on the carnage Art inflicts—and nothing else. That’s not to say it’s boring; while things can occasionally feel a bit flat, at the end of the day, what really matters here is the "slasher" element. I understand that the two subsequent films are better, so keep that in mind when you watch this one. It’s the classic setup where the killer is invincible—he gets stabbed, beaten, and has things driven into his feet, yet he doesn’t even limp; it’s remarkable. Clearly, that’s the very essence of these films: irrationality.

The performances are quite mediocre; I don’t feel they are the film’s strong suit. A couple of the women do put some real effort into their portrayals—conveying terror, horror, and fear—but that’s about it. That said, the clown is spectacular; David Howard Thornton brings him to life, and even though he doesn’t utter a single word, his grimaces, gestures, and facial expressions are more than enough to get the job done—and, most importantly, to clearly communicate his intentions. Ultimately, this is a full-blown slasher film that perhaps could have used a bit more substance in its plot; a little more context wouldn’t have hurt. It’s extremely violent, bloody, explicit, and graphic. Given that the character has become an iconic figure for Halloween, I think he’s worth checking out. The runtime is under an hour and a half. I’ve included the trailer below.
