Slowing Down

There is a saying that those who do not heed advice do not live to grow old; considering this, what better advisor is there than life itself? It does not speak in words, but rather through the passage of time. Life moves forward, offering us a wide array of opportunities and free will, and I believe that only those of us who pay attention to the details of each lesson can truly say we are learning and moving forward. I used to think this was a universal constant, that everyone grasps things at different times, though sometimes I wonder if there are people who learn nothing at all. In any case, my point is that life speaks to us through lessons, and we must keep an open mind to interpret them correctly.

I haven't felt entirely well these past few days, or rather, these past few months. In fact, the lesson life has taught me is that I’ve had to slow down. I live passionately; I do a bit of everything, I’m a big dreamer, and I’m always building, even when I’m sad, upset, or disappointed. But over the last three months, ever since the earthquakes, everything has changed. Every idea I have or person I interact with seems completely at odds with what I need; it’s as if I’m in a state of forced stagnation. And understandably so: the city and the people have changed a great deal, and all of this compounds the way things were already unfolding in my country.

Among the things I’ve let slip away without realizing it are my afternoon photo walks, and consequently, my posts for "Wednesday Walks" have become less frequent. That said, you know I have no trouble revisiting my travel photos; magically, I still have plenty left to share 😅 Yet, writing about those moments of happiness feels different when my soul is a bit frayed. The photos of the path I’m sharing today aren't of cityscapes, art, or buildings with stunning architecture; they are simply snapshots of life’s little details, things that bring me joy but that many people often overlook. Clouds, branches, flowers, trees, and that simple, deep blue sky that recharges my energy whenever I pause to appreciate it. How can things become so unrecognizable that I sometimes lose sight of the beauty surrounding me?...

I am truly sorry that what I write for Hive lately seems to have lost that touch of magic, that spark of my usual joy. I am still a cheerful person; I'm just going through a string of bad days, days that might not seem so terrible to an outsider. There are people, some very close to me, who are truly suffering, but that doesn't mean I'm not a human being with feelings. Sadly, three months on, I can admit that the earthquake affected me deeply on an emotional level. I am doing a lot to stay well, and I'm okay with that, but I'm no longer moving at my usual pace; I've had to slow down my projects, even though I didn't want to. Life is asking me right now to calmly wait for better times to come. And don't get me wrong, waiting calmly doesn't mean sitting around doing nothing; that's impossible for me. But I can no longer let myself get desperate just because things aren't happening right this instant; that only hurts me...

The worst part of this whole story is that I already possess the answers and the tools to get through this, I’ve done it before. This is just another traumatic event I need to overcome, and there are many ways to heal. The tragedy involving my dad and my family still looms larger than what I’m feeling right now, and I managed to rise above that; so, I need to stay strong and keep a clear perspective. If I have the capacity to find beauty in the details I come across and photograph along the way, then I also have the capacity to change the atmosphere around me. This same distress has led me to leave behind certain habits, pastimes, and people, but much of what I’ve set aside is actually good for me, so I just need to reclaim it, even if it’s difficult at first. Writing about this helps me a great deal, even though, deep down, I always hope no one actually reads these unfiltered thoughts 😅
