MicroFiction: A 250 word story format that I often utilize to address the daily prompts. The story today is written using the word prompt "that skunk has a gun".
...When I hear the phrase "that skunk has a gun", my thoughts immediately turn to the animal that sprays you with an odor that's unbearable. My same thoughts on the prompt. Of course, an animal won't be carrying a physical weapon, such as a gun. However, the smell emitted from the animal can feel just as deadly. That's my take on the prompt was that an animal or person possesses an extremely powerful presence that it can be harmful. I hope you like my version of the prompt.
For my theme, I was inspired by and utilized the @daily.prompt's publishing of 15 October 2026, Freewriters Community Daily Writing Prompt Day 3257: that skunk has a gun!.
Below is my story:
A weekend shopping trip turned disastrous as shots rang out near the local mall. Elliott scoured 10th Street for signs of the shooter in order to direct authorities to the culprit. Instantly, Elliott spotted a teen casually brandishing a weapon as the teen approached the mall.
"I know that guy," Elliott whispered. "Duck, that skunk has a gun!" Elliott yelled to the crowd, gathering his children to his side and ushering them from the scene. His desire to take down the gunman before he could do widespread damage was urgent. However, his desire to protect his children was primary.
Once they were out of the shooter's range, Michael, Elliott's oldest, asked quizzically, "dad, why did you refer to that guy as a "skunk"?
Wanting to always be straightforward and truthful with his children, he answered tactfully, "because, son, I'd know that smell anywhere. It reeks of evil. I've encountered that young man on numerous occasions while patrolling the area."
Immediately distinguishing the youth's attire and brand of tattoos, he surmised a rival conflict was taking place. The worse scenario for the shoppers was to be caught up in a gang dispute. Over the course of his ten years, Elliott had witnessed numerous casualties resulting from the growing violence in his community. Too many innocent lives had been lost
Elliott's instinct was overwhelming. He had to intervene. Suddenly, he noticed his neighbor standing nearby. "I'd be grateful if you'd watch my children."
Unsurprising, the neighbor frowned, replying, *thanks for your service."

...Cuando oigo la frase «esa mofeta tiene un arma», inmediatamente pienso en ese animal que te rocía con un olor insoportable. Lo mismo pienso yo sobre el tema. Por supuesto, un animal no va a llevar un arma física, como una pistola. Sin embargo, el olor que desprende puede resultar igual de letal. Mi interpretación del tema es que un animal o una persona posee una presencia tan poderosa que puede resultar dañina. Espero que te guste mi versión del tema.

Una salida de compras de fin de semana se convirtió en una pesadilla cuando se oyeron disparos cerca del centro comercial local. Elliott peinó la calle 10 en busca de indicios del tirador para poder guiar a las autoridades hasta el culpable. Al instante, Elliott divisó a un adolescente que blandía con total naturalidad un arma mientras se acercaba al centro comercial.
«Conozco a ese chico», susurró Elliott. «¡Agáchate, ese muyo tiene un arma!» Elliott gritó a la multitud, reunió a sus hijos a su lado y los sacó rápidamente del lugar. Su deseo de neutralizar al tirador antes de que pudiera causar un daño generalizado era urgente. Sin embargo, su deseo de proteger a sus hijos era lo primero.
