Recap Parts 1 Thru 7
Empty nester Beverly Buckley felt a bit depressed that particular summer morning when she hatched a peculiar plan. Why not "throw under the bus", referring to her husband, Lionel, after a mishap in their subdivision involving the death of the community petunias.
Preston Milworth, HOA President, set out to locate the culprit before their next HOA meeting. Beverly provided the anonymous tip that led him to her doorstep to confront her husband his best friend and next door neighbor, Stanley. Unable to defend himself, Preston concluded that Lionel was guilty. Stanley blurted out his neighborhood suppression and undercover militia operation by the HOA.
Inside, Beverly watched through the blinds, listening. She didn't count on Preston taking his vindictive nature to the extreme.
The HOA sent a Demand Letter demanding $5K as restitution for the damaged flowers. The neighborhood petunia crisis mushroomed into a full-blown assault on her family with financial consequences she didn't anticipate in her "throw him under the bus" scheme.
The situation required desperate measures. Beverly pondered that night how best to handle the situation. Once a solution presented itself from reading her 15-year old diary, a brilliant idea materialized that included Stanley's niece, Candice. Convincing the niece to agree to her plan proved easier than the imagined. Now, if the niece could just reel in Preston, that would remove another obstacle in her quest to remedy the petunia debacle.
Candice was a professional who took on the challenge with glee. She set the trap for Preston Milworth, a/k/a "Big Daddy".
And he didn't disappoint. He just didn't realize the video was in perfect working condition. It captured all Candice required to assist Mrs. Buckley in her plan.
Summer of the Great Petunia Poisoning and Other Dilemmas - Part 8
Four glasses of wine later, Carmen spied Preston Milworth displaying obvious signs of inebriation. Not only was his speech slurred, but also his attempts at seduction was reduced to zero. Frustrated, he shoved her to the side and lashed out. "You did this to me on purpose! You little..." His words trailed off as he fell backward on the bed murmuring incoherently, "no loyalty these days."
Once the kibbing began, it was inexorable.
Rising slightly, but still on his elbows, he blurted, slurring his words, "can't trust so-called family to do the right thing anymore. Just one simple assignment. Try to help those poor bastards, but what did get in return?" He paused and waited as though Candice was ready with the answer. She flashed a wry smile.
"Nothing. Nada. Can't follow simple instructions. Those so-called professionals be damned. Screwed up, royally with that Dipel."
Gotcha! Candice rejoiced silently. She listened carefully, as Preston hinted at the reason for her arranged tryst. She planted a seed.
"I hear ya, Big Daddy. Family can cause you more trouble than they're worth, then throw up their hands as though it's your fault. Best stay as far away from them as you can. But what is Dipel and how does it affect you?" she asked coaxing with a smile.
"Everything," he stammered, hands flailing. "And wish I could stay as far away from Carmen as I can. Except I'm tied to the hip. And that damn family of hers. The shiftless beggars. They profess to know how to handle any DIY job. What a joke! I wish I'd never agreed to let them handle the subdivision contract. Can't even tend to some worthless flowers. I'll lose my job over that. Then, where will they be? No account lowlifes. Try to help people, and look how they repaid me."
Preston didn't divulge the particulars of the petunia disaster, just attacks on his wife's family characters to piece the two together. He paused, then fell on his back across the bed.
Candice shook him, then doused his face with water. He surfaced for an attempted second round.
"No. You've had enough for one night. I've arranged for your escort home." The concern in her voice touched Preston. He leaned over and placed a soft kiss on her forehead.
Once gone, Candice replayed the tape in its entirety while counting her payment. A job well done, indeed, she congratulated herself.
Dialing a number, she nodded several times before hanging up.
The next morning was Saturday. The day of the highly anticipated HOA Board Meeting. At 3:00 p.m, matters of importance to the community, including an informal, though dramatic "trial" at the community pool would determine Lionel Buckley's status. Would Preston Milworth continue as their HOA President, or would a fresh, forward-thinking community-minded newcomer upset his plans for re-election. The neighborhood was abuzz with excitement as they held their collective breaths.
8:00 a.m. Beverly rose early to a knock at her door. She glanced behind her where Lionel lay snoring. Shaking her head, a wry smile escaped wondering how undisturbed he could sleep when his fate and financial setback were to be decided today.
Dressing hurriedly, she greeted a somewhat familiar neighborhood resident even before she'd had a chance to apply morning hygiene.
"Hello, Mrs. Buckley. Don't know if you remember me, but we both entered bakery items for the subdivision bake-off contest. My name is Dorothy Higgins."
"Why, yes, Mrs. Higgins. So nice to see you again. And, I remember your delicious zucchini bread took home the 1st place trophy. Congratulations."
Mrs. Higgings smiled broadly.
"I wish my visit was as pleasant, but it concerns a grave matter. May I come in?"
Beverly invited her in, then glanced up, listening. Good. Lionel hadn't stirred yet.
"Please sit while I go freshen up. It'll only be a moment. Coffee?."
"Yes, please. Thanks."
Several moments later, Beverly returned and head straight to the kitchen. "Please join me at the bar."
"I know it's a bit early, but I felt the urgency since the HOA meeting will take place this afternoon. I truly apologize for not mustering up the nerve to speak with you before now. I didn't know how you would take my intrusion into your personal matter with the HOA, but sensed I could trust you."
Intrigued, Beverly prompted, "go on. You can trust me. And if it's about the HOA, I'd appreciate any insight. I'm not at liberty to divulge the full context of our dispute, though."
With a pensive look, Mrs. Higgins began, "I understand. I may have information that can help clear your husband of guilt. Rumors have circulated that Lionel will be charged with destroying the community petunias. I know for a fact that he's not the one responsible."
Beverly paused midway filling their coffee cups.
"I hope you're not offended, but I'm on the neighborhood watch. And I personally witnessed you pouring your zucchini bread into the petunia patch. Whether out of frustration you didn't win or something else, I know for a fact that your dessert didn't kill those damn flowers. I've drooped stuff in that flower bed many times myself. Neither did Lionel's trampling on the flowers that day two months ago. Shame he got those nice sneakers all muddy."
"Really?" Beverly stifled a laugh. "Then please pray tell who was the culprit."
"First, you need a bit of background to understand how our problems with Preston Milworth started."
My husband, Humberto, had a maintenance contract for our Section 2. One morning last year, from a hole in Mrs. Reynolds fence, Humberto witnessed Preston exiting her home from the back sliding glass. Mr. Reynolds didn't escort him out.
They briefly exchanged glances. However, the next week, my husband's contract was abruptly terminated for cause. The exact reason was never given. The situation upset Humberto so that he suffered a heart ailment.
Then, there was the esplanade contracts. On paper were fake companies given the jobs. Actually, they were hourly day workers. Don't know whose equipment they were utilizing. But I heard Preston had several units he rented at a storage facility.
To put it bluntly, his own family killed those petunias. I mean, she stammered, "his wife's family". You see, on paper the contractor was a bogus company. But it was his brother-in-law as the maintenance contractor without HOA Board approval.
When Humberto tried to complain, Preston labeled him as a disgruntled contractor who was upset at losing the contract. Ever since then, Humberto kept an eye on his wife's brother. I know it was his wife's family because a friend of Humberto knows the family well.
Getting back to the petunias. Now, my Humberto is a professional. He witnessed Preston's wife's brother pour ten times the normal amount of solution onto the petunias. According to Humberto, it was enough to kill a band of horses. After pouring, he looked suspiciuouly around the yard. Probably to see if anyone saw him. Ten, he took the empty bottle back to his car and sped off. A few days later, the entire neighborhood gossiped about those dead petunias. Humberto told me he already knew. He didn't dare say anything else Preston blame him.
Not only that. I heard from other friends that Preston is extremely flirty, but careful not to befriend the spouses.
Do you see the circle of mess that Preston brought to our community? And only to enrich his pockets. Besides that, his wife, Carmen, works for the HOA too. So she has to know what's going on behind the scenes. That's too much nepotism if you ask me.
"I see," Beverly merely responded, lips pursed and brows deeply embedded in her forehead as if attempting indeed to sort out the Preston Milworth mess.
The plot thickened without Beverly even having to stir. She had all that was required to bring plan to fruition.

«No. Ya has tenido suficiente por esta noche. He organizado que te acompañen a casa».
Me llamo Dorothy Higgins».
