Felicidad en casa de pobre/Happiness in a Poor Household (Esp-Eng)

Hace unos días recibí una noticia que me hizo muy feliz, pero esa felicidad no me duró ni quince minutos porque ya se sabe que Cuba es el país de los absurdos y aquí vamos de uno en otro con gran facilidad y liviandad. Temprano en la maña recibí una llamada de un número desconocido y para mi sorpresa, era de la oficina municipal de ETECSA (Única empresa de telecomunicaciones de Cuba). Una joven muy amable me informó que se había aprobado la colocación del nauta hogar para la casa de mi padre y que debía presentarse allí antes del miércoles de la próxima semana. Este es un trámite que inicié hace ya más de un año pero en aquella ocasión me dieron que no se estaba haciendo por falta del famoso TPLink, el aparato que sirve para eso. Tomaron los datos de mi padre y me pidieron mi número de teléfono para avisarme.

Pues resulta que enseguida me entusiasmé con la idea de tener conexión a Internet cuando se me agotaran los escasos datos móviles que dicha empresa nos concede, casi como una limosna, bastante cara, por cierto. Pero no, nada más lejos de mi ilusión. Por algún " extraño" motiv, se cortó la comunicación con la amable joven trabajadora de ETECSA y me volvió a llamar como a los diez minutos. Esta vez para decirme que ellos hacían el contrato pero no garantizaban el TPLink, que eso lo debía buscar el cliente. Ahí mismo me dio "Changó con conocimiento" (Me molesté). Según tengo entendido, ese aparato solo lo venden en dólares y en una suma que no está a mi alcance y mucho menos al alcamce de mis padres. La amable joven me explicó que debía hacer el contrato antes de la fecha señalada o si no perdía el derecho al servicio y que se debía pagar, como mínimo, 300 pesos mensuales.

Y yo me pregunto ¿Qué servicio ? ¿Es lógico pagar por algo que no tienes? ¿Por algo que es probable no tengas nunca?

En ese instante, la amable joven, que tan solo era una simple tramitadora, tuvo que escuchar todo mi desahogo. Sentí hasta pena por ella, pero no pude evitar decirle algunas verdades para que se las trasmitiera a sus superiores.

ETECSA, para los que no son cubanos, es la principal proveedora de servicios de telecomunicaciones en Cuba. Opera todo lo relacionado con la telefonía fija, móvil, internet y transmisión de datos. Como empresa estatal, administra gran parte de la infraestructura del país y tiene un papel monopólico en muchos servicios. Ofrece conexión mediante redes móviles, nauta hogar, salas de navegación y datos móviles. Sin embargo, enfrenta críticas por precios elevados, lentitud, limitada cobertura y restricciones tecnológicas. Su gestión está marcada por limitaciones de divisas y tecnológia obsoleta.

Para muchos cubanos, ETECSA representa la principal vía de comunicación, no nos queda otra opción. Su futuro depende de inversiones, mejoras en infraestructura y políticas que amplíen un acceso más asequible. De forma general, ETECSA presta un servicio pésimo, es increíble como insultan la inteligencia de un pueblo. En fin, felicidad en casa de pobre. Sin palabras...

Happiness in a Poor Household

Hello, my friends. What a pleasure to greet you all again.

A few days ago I received news that made me very happy, but that happiness did not last even fifteen minutes, because everyone knows Cuba is the country of absurdities, and here we go from one to another with great ease and frivolity.

Early in the morning I received a call from an unknown number, and to my surprise, it was from the municipal ETECSA office (Cuba’s only telecommunications company). A very kind young woman informed me that the installation of Nauta Hogar had been approved for my father’s house and that he had to go there before Wednesday of next week. This is a procedure I started more than a year ago, but at that time they told me it was not being done due to the lack of the famous TPLink, the device used for that. They took my father’s information and asked for my phone number to notify me.

Well, it turns out I immediately got excited about the idea of having an Internet connection when the scarce mobile data that this company grants us—almost like charity, and quite expensive, by the way—ran out. But no, that was far from my hope.

For some “strange” reason, the communication with the kind young ETECSA worker was cut off, and she called me back about ten minutes later. This time it was to tell me that they would make the contract but did not guarantee the TPLink, that the customer had to find that. Right then I got “Changó con conocimiento” (I got angry). As far as I understand, that device is only sold in dollars and for a sum that is beyond my reach, and much less within my parents’ reach. The kind young woman explained that I had to make the contract before the stated date or otherwise I would lose the right to the service, and that at least 300 pesos a month had to be paid.

And I ask myself: What service? Is it logical to pay for something you don’t have? For something you probably will never have?

At that moment, the kind young woman, who was merely a simple paperwork clerk, had to listen to my whole venting. I even felt sorry for her, but I couldn’t help telling her a few truths so she could pass them on to her superiors.

ETECSA, for those who are not Cuban, is the main provider of telecommunications services in Cuba. It operates everything related to landline and mobile telephony, internet, and data transmission. As a state company, it manages much of the country’s infrastructure and has a monopoly role in many services. It offers connection via mobile networks, Nauta Hogar, browsing rooms, and mobile data. However, it faces criticism for high prices, slowness, limited coverage, and technological restrictions. Its management is marked by foreign-currency shortages and obsolete technology.

For many Cubans, ETECSA represents the main means of communication; we have no other option. Its future depends on investments, infrastructure improvements, and policies that expand more affordable access. In general, ETECSA provides a terrible service; it’s incredible how they insult the intelligence of a people. Anyway, happiness in a poor household. No words...
