Even having been there, I look at the photos and find it hard to believe that these beautiful mountain landscapes belong to the province of Buenos Aires. One always associates Buenos Aires with the big city, but the truth is that if you travel a little into the interior, you can come across these wonderful places. During our Easter long weekend getaway, the trekking group and I traveled to Saavedra to explore the Cura Malal mountain range, which rewarded us with beautiful views at every step. Our day had started very cloudy in the morning, but by noon the weather gave us a break so we could keep walking 😃.
Our hike started around 8 AM after breakfast, and our first stop was the Huellas de Amistad Refuge. From there, we enjoyed the view of the valley for a while, and when we were ready, we continued up the mountain. This trail was not difficult at all, although we came across several rocks that made the route a little more interesting. At times, we even had to climb using our hands for support: nothing as complicated as rock climbing, but entertaining enough to make it fun.
After the refuge, our first peak within the mountain range was Cumbre Vigilante. This summit was marked with a stone tower, and of course, we didn't hesitate to leave our own. I was very happy that the weather improved because we were enjoying wonderful views from up there. It was even a little hot despite it being April, which lifted our spirits even more. From that point, looking ahead, we could see a little more of the route that lay before us.
The second peak we conquered on our adventure was Cerro Confluencia. To get there, we had to descend from the previous peak and climb back up to the next stone marker. This entire route was very picturesque, and I loved that each peak was marked with a sign displaying its name. Walking along this mountain range was exactly that: going up and down all the time. Since what I usually do is climb to a single peak and then descend, this adventure involving several consecutive peaks seemed great to me.
By the time we reached the next two peaks, which were practically next to each other, Guillermo, our guide, told us that we were halfway along the mountain range. First, we saw Cerro Pura Vida and then Cerro Ballena. It was only 1 PM, and we had already walked quite a lot as we worked toward our goal of exploring this area. The good thing about walking up there was that we had a great 360° view, with lots of greenery all around. I would say that this hike was not very demanding, but it was quite entertaining to explore each peak and take photos at every one of them. The small "mountain range" in Buenos Aires was a great plan for a long weekend.
For my taste in hikes that last the entire day, having covered so much ground and it still being only midday was great. That meant we still had much more to see, and that's exactly how it turned out: I didn't want the outing to end just yet. The peaks we had visited were beautiful, and we still had the second half ahead of us. The idea was to descend a little further ahead and walk back through the valley we had been seeing from all those scenic viewpoints. It sounded like a great adventurous plan, and we were having a wonderful time as we made it happen with every step ❤️.
