Taking a shared trip in someone else's vehicle has its pros and cons. Until now, I had only enjoyed its advantages: being able to reach a place that is difficult to access by public transport, sharing expenses, and taking advantage of having someone drive me because I don't know how to drive. But on my last outing with the trekking group, I discovered the downside, which is having to depend on the car owner, who decides when they want to leave. This is what happened when we went to Saavedra, Buenos Aires, when the driver who took me decided to end the trip a day early and forced me to change my own plans for the outing 🙃.
Our original idea was to spend the entire Easter long weekend in the mountainous area of Saavedra, in the interior of Buenos Aires Province. We set off on Thursday, covering almost 600 km to get there. We arrived a bit late, so we went on a short night trek, and the following day, Friday, we did our longest trek along the entire Cura Malal mountain range. Everything was going well until Saturday morning, when I got the surprise of hearing over breakfast that my driver wasn't enjoying the trip and wanted to go back home. There were still two more days ahead of us, so I wasn't prepared for that. I checked the bus options for returning on Sunday night, but the schedules didn't work out either, which made me even more frustrated: I really didn't want to end my trip that day.
Unfortunately, there was no room in any of the other cars in the group, so I was thinking of giving up and having to go back home. But it was at that moment that I remembered Silvia and her husband, some friends I had met in Ushuaia who lived in Olavarría, about 270 km from where we were, along the same route back to the City of Buenos Aires. I immediately contacted Silvia and explained the situation, asking her if she could host me at her house for the rest of the long weekend. She said yes without any problem, and I ended up going to visit her on an improvised trip.
After a chaotic morning and a hurried trip back, my driver dropped me off at Silvia's house in Olavarría, where she and her husband were waiting for me with mate and a cake. I hadn't seen them since November 2024, but even after a year and a half, the good vibes were still there. I met them when I lived in Ushuaia for six months, and since they had also spent a long time at the hostel, we became friends and stayed in touch. They were really kind to welcome me into their home almost by surprise, and not only that, but on Sunday they gave me a whole tour of the city of Olavarría by car. This city is one of the largest in the interior of Buenos Aires Province, with many things to see, such as rivers, historic buildings, and rural surroundings. After all, it turned out to be a nice twist on the trip I had originally planned.
My trip finally ended on Monday morning, when I took the bus back home, just before having to go to work. Once again, having traveled as a backpacker through so many places has left me with many friends scattered across the map, whom I can fortunately count on if I need a favor, as I did on this occasion. After this experience, it is clear that unexpected events can sometimes turn out really well and take you to places you hadn't planned to visit at first. If my driver hadn't disliked the trip, I still wouldn't know Olavarría, so things weren't so terrible after all 😃.
