They say weekends are for resting, but if there is one thing I rarely do on Saturdays and Sundays, it is sit still. I am always looking for something fun to do, so that I can make the most of my free time. This way of looking at the end of the week has led me to do many interesting things, some of which turned out well and others not so much. One of them was the day we went to Avellaneda, Buenos Aires, to see what I thought would be a great food event, but which ended in disaster because of people's bad behavior 😶.

Dicen que los fines de semana son para descansar, pero si hay algo que hago poco los sábados y los domingos, es quedarme quieta. Siempre estoy buscando algo entretenido para hacer, como para que valga la pena el tiempo libre que tengo. Esta forma de ver el fin de la semana me llevó a hacer muchas cosas interesantes, que a veces salieron bien y otras no tanto. Una de ellas fue el día que fuimos hasta Avellaneda, Buenos Aires, para ver lo que suponía, sería un gran evento gastronómico, pero que terminó en desastre por el mal comportamiento de la gente 😶.

For weeks, a major event in the streets of Avellaneda, a large city in the southern part of Buenos Aires downtown, had been advertised. It was a day organized by a very famous local steakhouse, which had set itself the ambitious goal of preparing the world's longest matambre pizza sandwich. This sandwich was expected to measure almost 800 meters in total, about eight city blocks, and was competing for a place in the Guinness World Records. Of course, this outdoor event attracted a lot of people from early in the day.

Durante semanas habían estado anunciado un gran evento en las calles de Avellaneda, una ciudad muy grande en el sur del conurbano bonaerense. Se trataba de una jornada organizada por una parrilla local muy famosa, quien se había puesto la ambiciosa meta de preparar el sandwich de matambre a la pizza más largo del mundo. Este sandwich llegaría a mediar casi 800 metros, en total unas 8 cuadras, y concursaba para figurar en los récord Guinness. Por supuesto, este evento al aire libre atrajo a mucha gente desde temprano.

The event went on normally for most of the day. I went with my niece and my sister, and we arrived there around 12 PM, since they had announced that the sandwich would be handed out for free starting at 3 PM. When we arrived, we found a large setup in the middle of the street, where a long table had been set up to place the sandwich. Around the area, there was a display of old cars and even food trucks offering other kinds of food. There was also music and a host to make the wait more enjoyable.

El evento trascurrió con normalidad la mayor parte del día. Yo fui con mi sobrina y mi hermana, y llegamos allá alrededor de las 12 PM; ya que habían dicho que el sandwich iba a repartirse gratis a partir de las 3 PM. Cuando llegamos, nos encontramos con una gran preparación en medio de la calle, donde habían montado una larga mesa para poner el sandwich. A los alrededores, había exposición de autos viejos e incluso food trucks con otras comidas. También había música y un animador, para hacer más amena la espera.

Imagine the massive operation that must have taken place to put together a sandwich of those dimensions. The large grill used to cook the meat was at one end of the sandwich, and to fill the bread, they had to bring in an additional truck that moved along the length of the sandwich. The sandwich also included fried eggs, so there was another truck responsible for cooking them and supplying the assembly line. Watching the preparation progress along the eight blocks of bread was quite a spectacle.

Imaginense el gran despliegue que tuvo que ocurrir para poder armar un sandwich de esas características: la gran parrilla para preparar la carne estaba en la punta del sandwich y para ir rellenando el pan, tuvieron que poner un camión adicional que se fuera moviendo a lo largo del sandwich. Además, el sandwich llevaba huevo frito, así que había otro camión que se encargaba de hacerlos y abastecer la línea de armado. Ver como avanzaban en la preparación a lo largo de las 8 cuadras de pan que había fue un verdadero espectáculo.

At first, everything was going well, and people were excited and calm, but for some reason, everything took much longer than expected. They had announced everywhere that the sandwich would be served at 3 PM, but 6 PM came and it still wasn't finished. This made the crowd quite impatient, although the organizer kept asking everyone to please remain calm because there was plenty of sandwich for everyone. Unfortunately, his words only helped the organizer finish the sandwich and measure it so he could register it with Guinness World Records. As soon as he announced that it was ready to be served, people rushed toward the table as if they had never eaten in their lives. From that moment on, everything turned into chaos: the sandwich was practically stolen, even though it was free, people grabbed two, three, or four portions at a time, and there was pushing and arguing. I wasn't going to expose my girls to that, so we watched all the chaos from a distance and, of course, we didn't manage to eat anything despite the long wait.

Al principio todo marchaba bien y la gente estaba entusiasmada y calmada, pero por alguna razón, todo se demoró mucho más de los esperado. Por todos lados habían anunciado que servirían el sandwich a las 3 PM, pero llegaron las 6 PM y todavía no estaba terminado. Eso hizo que la multitud se impacientara bastante, aunque el organizador pedía que por favor estén tranquilos que había mucho sandwich para todos. Lamentablemente, estas palabras solo lograron que el organizador terminara el sandwich y lo midiera para anotarse en el record Guinness, porque en cuando habilitó que ya estaba listo para servir, la gente se avalanzó sobre la mesa como si nunca habiesen comido en su vida. A partir de eso momento todo fue un caos: el sandwich fue robado aunque se trataba de algo gratis, la gente agarraba dos, tres, cuatro porciones a la vez y hubo empujones y discusiones. Yo no iba a exponer a mis niñas a eso, así que observamos toda la barbarie desde lejos y por supuesto, no llegamos a comer nada a pesar de la larga espera.

It was a real shame that such a lovely event ended up being ruined by people's bad manners. The incident was so embarrassing that it made the news everywhere, of course, with reports pointing to complex political issues such as hunger among the population and the economic problems faced by people who turn to free food. In my opinion, none of that had anything to do with what happened at the event: it all came down to people's opportunistic behavior and their inability to respect basic rules of coexistence. By the end of the day, my girls and I had eaten nothing but snacks from a kiosk, so I had to take them to eat hamburgers somewhere else. They couldn't complain, because after all, we did manage to get something to eat.

Fue una verdadera pena que un evento tan lindo haya terminado arruinado por lo maleducada que es la gente. Los hechos fueron tan vergonzosos que salieron en todas las noticias, por supuesto alegando trasfondos políticos complejos como el hambre de la población y los problemas económicos que tiene la gente que recurre a buscar comida gratis. En mi opinión, nada de eso tuvo que ver con lo sucedido en el evento: todo se debió a lo ventajera que es la gente y la incapacidad de respetar las ordenes de convivencia. Al fin del día, mi niñas y yo no habíamos comido nada más que snacks del kiosco así que me tocó llevarlas a comer una hamburguesa en otro lugar: no se podían quejar, porque después de todo, algo de comida tuvimos 😂.
