Nomad Hive - How we managed to save money during our stay in Uruguay: an option for traveling without spending too much. 😃❤️

One of the biggest “obstacles” to taking a trip around Uruguay when you’re from Argentina is the financial aspect. Despite being so close, it seems that our neighboring country operates with numbers that are quite different from what we are used to, and even from what our other neighboring countries are accustomed to. Everyone recommends bringing plenty of money when traveling around Uruguay, but luckily, there is always a way to make it a little more affordable while still keeping it enjoyable 😃.

Lately, I’ve had the opportunity to travel around our neighboring countries, and one thing I’ve always been interested in learning about is how the economy works in those places. I was surprised to see how affordable everything was in Bolivia and Paraguay, and how prices in Chile were fairly similar to ours. A few years ago, my friend and I took a quick two-day trip to Uruguay, and I remembered everything being quite expensive, with prices that were even twice as high as what we were used to back home.

Keeping this in mind, and based on my cousin’s experiences visiting Uruguay, we knew that we had to find a way to make the trip a little more affordable. We had decided to spend a few days at the beach, and the idea was not to spend too much, so we organized everything a little in advance. What we did was plan what we would eat there and buy all the necessary ingredients to cook, including drinks. We wouldn’t have any problems taking these things across the border; we just had to be careful not to bring fresh foods such as meat or dairy products.

Since our idea was to stay at a campsite, we brought everything we needed to cook outdoors. This way, we saved a lot of money on both accommodation and food. During our stay, we only had to go to the market to buy meat, water, and some ice for our drinks. The good thing was that we were able to exchange some dollars for Uruguayan pesos, so we could get by without having to use our credit cards too much. With 100 dollars in cash, we had enough for the few things we needed to buy. For every dollar, we received 40 Uruguayan pesos.

Every time we went to the market, we could see how much we had saved by bringing our own groceries from home. On top of that, since we were in a neighboring country, the brands we were familiar with were considered “imported,” meaning their prices could be up to twice as high as what we were used to. After this experience, I think that traveling to Uruguay on a low budget is possible if you plan properly and have the advantage of getting around by car. This trip was truly amazing in every way: the scenery was beautiful, the good weather stayed with us from beginning to end, and we didn’t spend that much money. We couldn’t have had a better trip 😃.

Hermosa experiencia, querida amiga @lauramica.

While it's true that Uruguay is quite expensive for tourists, for those who live and work there, the cost of living is lower than in Argentina because incomes are higher. Many Argentinians are trying their luck in the Uruguayan job market.

It's great that you and your family managed to make this trip more affordable. It's good that your cousin already had experience visiting the country. Cooking your own food is an excellent way to reduce travel costs.

What a wonderful experience, dear friend @lauramica. Beyond seeing beautiful places, you've learned how to make your life there more economical.

Thank you so much for sharing all this experience and information.

    Have a lovely afternoon.

Hugs to all your loved ones.
