If you take a look at the shape of the Uruguayan coastline, you’ll find that it is made up of a series of “points.” In reality, these points are peaks along the coast that offer great views of the Río de la Plata. On the third day of our trip with my cousin and aunt, we decided to go on an exploratory drive to visit them. Our main goal was to reach the most famous of the points, Punta del Este, but we made a few stops along the way. The day was completely sunny, and we made the most of it, also getting to see another one of the points: Punta Ballena 😃.

Si echan un vistazo a la forma de la costa uruguaya, encontrarán que esta está formada por una serie de "puntas". En la realidad, estas puntas se tratan de picos en la zona costera que permiten tener grandes vistas del Río de La Plata. En nuestro tercer día de viaje con mi primo y mi tía, decidimos ir a dar un paseo exploratorio hacia ellas. Nuestro objetivo principal era llegar a la más famosas de las puntas, Punta del Este, pero en el camino hicimos algunas paradas intermedias. El día estaba completamente soleado y lo aprovechamos al máximo, donde también conocimos otra de las puntas: Punta Ballena 😃.

Our outing that day started quite early, as we had to travel the 40 km separating Piriápolis from Punta del Este. After a nearly rainy day, the third day of our trip surprised us with beautiful sunshine. We packed our things and set off to explore right away. Our first stop was at a lookout point, one of many in this area, from where we could admire the coast of Piriápolis. The area was beautiful, with what looked like a private neighborhood below us, full of charming pink houses. On top of that, the view we had from there was spectacular.

Nuestro paseo de ese día empezó bastante temprano, ya que teníamos que recorrer los 40 km que separan Piriápolis de Punta del Este. Después de un día de casi lluvia, el tercer día de paseo nos sorprendió con un sol hermoso. Preparamos nuestras cosas y enseguida salimos a explorar. Nuestra primera parada fue en un mirador, uno de tantos en esta zona, desde donde se podía apreciar la costa de Piriápolis. Esta zona era muy hermosa, con una especie de barrio privado debajo de nosotros, lleno de casas rosadas y pintorescas. Además, la vista que teníamos desde allí era espectacular.

After driving for a little over half an hour, we reached the point we wanted to see at first: Punta Ballena. To get there, we had to turn off the main road and take a street that went all the way to the end of the coastline before looping back to the route. From above, this point looks almost like a peninsula, and up close, it looked like a cluster of rocks. With the beautiful weather on our side, the Río de la Plata was an intense shade of blue, and between the breeze and the summer heat, it made you want to stay there and spend the whole day.

Después de manejar por un poco más de media hora, llegamos a la punta que queríamos ver primero: Punta Ballena. Para entrar a este lugar, había que desviarse de la ruta principal y entrar en una calle que llegaba hasta el fin de la costa y luego retornaba a la ruta. En la vista aérea, esta punta en casi como una península, y viéndola de cerca, se veía como un cúmulo de rocas. Acompañados por el buen clima, el Río de La Plata se veía con un azul intenso y entre el viento y el calor del verano, te daban ganas de quedarte ahí a pasar todo el día.

At the end of this point, there was a craft market where you could buy a souvenir of the place if you wanted to take something home with you. It was clear that this was quite a touristy spot, as it was full of people taking photos and there were Uruguayan flags everywhere. You could also get there on foot or by running, for those who prefer to get a little more exercise. I really liked the atmosphere of this place, where you could breathe in plenty of fresh air. Without a doubt, our stop along the way to Punta del Este was well worth it.

En el final de esta punta, se podía encontrar una feria de artesanías por si querías llevarte un recuerdo del lugar. Se notaba que este lugar era bastante turístico, porque estaba lleno de gente sacando fotos y había banderas de Uruguay por todos lados. A este lugar también se podía llegar caminando o corriendo, por aquellos que prefieren un poco más el deporte. Me gustó mucho el ambiente de este lugar, donde se podía respirar mucho aire fresco. Sin dudas valió la pena nuestra parada intermedia camino a Punta del Este.

Uruguay’s coastline is full of incredible places to explore, and I was very fortunate to be able to take this trip with my cousin in his truck. Having a vehicle on a trip is a great advantage, as it allows you to explore more in less time. That was exactly what we needed for this long-weekend getaway, where time was limited but our desire to discover new places was endless. Everything went really well on this outing, and we were already getting excited as we made our way toward our favorite destination of the day 😄.

La costa de Uruguay está llena de lugares increíbles para ir a dar un paseo, y fui muy afortunada de poder hacer este viaje con mi primo en su camioneta. Contar con un vehículo en el paseo es una gran ventaja, ya que te permite explorar más en menos tiempo. Eso era justo lo que necesitábamos para esta escapada de fin de semana largo, en donde el tiempo era escaso pero las ganas de conocer lugares nuevos eran muchas. Todo salió muy bien en este paseo, y los buenos ánimos ya se estaban preparando para cuando llegáramos a nuestro destino predilecto de ese día 😃.
